About the Recording

J Mascis Live At CBGB’s: The First Acoustic Show captures a historic performance recorded live at CBGB in New York in December 1993. This limited edition CD release, remastered by Dan Hersch at DigiPrep, features 10 previously unreleased recordings alongside two tracks that had been previously issued.

The performance represents an important moment in J Mascis’s solo career, documenting his acoustic interpretation of his songs at the legendary venue that was central to punk and alternative rock history. The intimate setting allowed J to showcase the melodic foundations of his compositions in a stripped-down acoustic format.

Release Details

Originally recorded in December 1993, this performance remained largely unreleased until 2006 when it was issued as a limited edition CD by Sire/Warner Bros./Blanco Y Negro/Rhino Records. The release was manufactured in the E.U. and features photography by Ebe Roberts and Michael Mohney, with design by Julie Wasak.

The album includes covers of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Every Mother’s Son” and Wipers’ “On The Run,” demonstrating J’s diverse influences and ability to reinterpret songs through his distinctive acoustic lens. The project was supervised by Matt Abels and engineered remotely by John Harris.
