RosangelaParticipantReally cool to see so much passion about J’s music. My first contact happened when I read a fanzine from Rio de Janeiro, about new bands – Nirvana, Swervedriver, Telescopes and many others, but some words from "Little Fury Things" attracted my attention. Later, I heard the J.’s version for "Show me the Way" on the radio. I hate Peter Frampton and I thought that J. had a good job in this song. I really liked his voice, different from everything that I heard before. There was a record store here in my town that rented CDs and I found "Fossiles" there. I felt in love with J., I recorded this CD and it became my best friend. J. obtains the impossible: his covers always are better than the original songs, like "Just Like Heaven", but my favourite is "Chunks". So, I run to the only decent store of my town and… a miracle! I found "Dinosaur" and "YLAOM". I love "The Leper", "Kracked", I love everything that J. has done! I bought the others CD in São Paulo, but, some years ago, thieves invaded my house and they took all my alternative CDs, CD player, video… My recovery started when I bought again the Dinosaur’s CDs..But I didn’t find everything, for instance, I had a really good Japanese CD, with "Turnip Farmer" (great!), "Keeblin", and I never found it again. Oh, but the thieves didn’t steal my love for J.’s music! Listening to Dinosaur made me discover other great musicians, like Mike Watt, nice bands, like Tad, Gumball, Sebadoh and I owe to J. my rediscovery of Neil Young. Well, now intend to explore the links for other sites, they seem to be really good! If I have time and if the computer is available again of course, no, I didn’t kill my work coleague… yet!
RosangelaParticipantHi, thanks, now I’m gonna give my testimony in the thread about the first contact with Dinosaur Jr. See you there!
RosangelaParticipantHi, Allison, I’ve been very busy but I’ve been missing this board a lot. How are you? I’m happy to see that J. is back and playing again. Thanks for this link, I printed it and I’m gonna read it right now!
Oh, now I’m the very happy owner of the new Iggy and I’m in love with it! Once again, he’s surprising me. All the songs are great. Hope you can read this message. And I hope to be back soon!
RosangelaParticipantI don’t know this band, Moist. I live in a town that couldn’t be called "little", but records take too long to come here. If I want to hear something different, I have to order it by São Paulo, where there’s a gallery full of rock stores, but of course, it’s necessary lots of money to get tuned. So, my fun is to frequent stores that sell secondhand records. I don’t care if it’s LP or CD, or if it’s a new or old band; it’s cheap! Few days ago, I bought a T. Rex and a Yardbirds. Very good! Some bands, sometimes, come here, I saw The Cult and Echo & The Bunnymen, last year. My musical taste embraces lots of styles and eras! About Neil Young, I like the fact that he plays loud. For instance, in this Yardbirds’ CD that I bought, guitars are very loud, and they were in 1964! Loud guitars and a remarkable singer, these are the main reasons that make me like a band. Bye!
RosangelaParticipantGood morning, all!
I think that each one told something right about polls and music industry. Nobody is completely right, nobody is completely wrong. Let’s stay with our curiosity about music. This is the most important thing: be curious.
Salamiguy, I’d choose "Rust Never Sleeps" too, for personal reasons, of course. Have you ever seen Neil playing alive? He was in Rock in Rio, but I didn’t go because Rio de Janeiro is far from my town, it’d cost a lot of money and the show was for thousands of people, I prefer a more intimate show. It wouldn’t be nice to travel and spend lots of money and not see Neil playing close to me… So I only watched parts of his show on TV…
RosangelaParticipantWell, it’s getting hotter! But don’t fight, please! It’s better to forget the polls and only listen to the music that touches our hearts. Beautiful, no? It’s like a vicious circle, industry makes people hear what industry wants, it feeds the "best-selling lists", people see the lists and buy these records…So, don’t worry about!
Salamiguy, I couldn’t say if "Rust Never Sleeps" is my favourite. Like Dinosaur’s records, my preferences change every day! For instance, some days ago I listened to "Broken Arrow" and I loved the way that guitars sound in this record.
I made a mistake, I meant that "Neil plays like nobody else does". Help, I need an English teacher!
RosangelaParticipantYeah, I agree that lots of albums sold doesn’t mean anything, otherwise we should idolize Michael Jackson… My son is crazy about Alanis and she can sing but it’s not the kind of record that I’d buy. Thank God that everybody agrees about Bryan Adams…
Salamiguy, Neil Young is one of my idols, his voice is different, he plays guitar like anybody else does, his lyrics are great. In my time as a teenager, I used to listen only Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, but I had a boyfriend (RIP) who "teached" me a lot about music, and the only record that he gave me during his short life was "Rust Never Sleeps". I’ve been a fan since then.
RosangelaParticipantThanks, Allison, I’ll check the sites that you indicated me as soon as possible; not much time, in fact. It was a big surprise when I read in this site, that J. was playing with Ron Asheton. J. always in good company…
Salamiguy, at least Canada gave us Neil Young! Did you mention 80’s heavy metal bands? I hate them all, except Whitesnake, I love David’s Coverdale’s voice and I’m always visiting his site, where fans have the opportunity to "talk" to him, he’s really a gentleman. And yeah, you’re sure about Allison, and I notice that everybody here seems to be good people.
I saw a Mike Watt’s video last weekend, the song is "Liberty Calls". Both, clip and song, are great. I don’t have this record. I only have one fIREHOSE and his CD solo with lots of people, like J., Eddie Veder, Flea… And some records that has his participation, like Porno for Pyros.
Hope to "see" you again soon,
Rosangela
RosangelaParticipantHi, Nige, I’m Rosangela (Rô Rock) and I’m new here too. I’m Brazilian. I recommend you "Martin and Me", only J., his wonderful guitar and lots of good songs. It’s great!
RosangelaParticipantMe again!
I was trying to watch Dino’s videos, but it’s taking toooooooo long… Maybe next time…
Salamiguy, thanks for the informations, now I don’t know if I like more "Gargoyle" or "Kracked". What is coming next?!?!?! Well, Canada and Brazil have something in common, no? We really have some excellent musicians, but, if you want to sell records and appear in TV, the right way is writing malicious lyrics and put two or three semi-naked girls to dance! Sad to say that our best rockstars died very young.
Allison, I read that the new Iggy Pop is very noisy, like he was in Stooges. I couldn’ access the site that you indicated to me yet to hear what he’s doing now, but I love noise, so, probably, I will like it! This is the main reason that makes me like J. Mascis: I love noise and I love calmness, and he is the person that better connects both things.
And yes, if I remember right, I wrote to Iggy when I got "American Caesar".
Well, your idea (hypnotize my coleague) is very good, less drastic than the idea that I have: Murder! (just kidding!). But, seriously, sometimes she drives me crazy, searching for gossips and recipes in Internet, all day long!
Waiting for your news,
Rosangela
RosangelaParticipantHello!
Allison, very nice story about Iggy. He came to Brazil many years ago ("Instinct" Tour) and I travelled to São Paulo just to see his show. It’ll be always in my mind, and I’m waiting for another opportunity to see him singing alive. Have you listened to his new record? I’m waiting, in despair, of course. It send me to to what Dimpfelmoser asked me: my darling, you have a wrong idea about Brazil; only in São Paulo we can find interesting records. Here in my town, I must have an enormous patience to get tuned. Our biggest artists, like Roberto Menescal, are despised. Artists that produce garbage are the ones that sell records! My favourite Brazilian artist, Walter Franco, is a complete unknown. Did you try to buy Roberto Menescal’s records in Internet? If I discover something about him, I’ll let you know, ok?
Well, maybe this week I can go and see Dino’s videos. I have to share the computer with a coleague here in my work, and she wants the computer only for her! Now she’s out, thank God!
Can anybody explain to me why, bellow my name, does appear the name "Gargoyle"? I love this song!
ELJ, I couldn’t scan the letter that Iggy wrote me: it’s a very private letter and I don’t have a scanner here in my work! Have a nice night, you all!
RosangelaParticipantThanks for the welcome! Yes, I’m a girl (not a young one, two decades of rock’n’roll) and I’m friendly too, specially if I’m drunken… And Brazil is a country full of contrasts, but we’re privileged by Mother Nature – beaches, islands, waterfalls, forests, it’s beautiful! I read some of the profiles and messages and it’s nice to find people who loves and are so interested about J.’s music. Wow, some of the boardmembers met J.! I’m noticing that there are lots of things to be discovered here. He almost came here once, for a Summer Festival, but it didn’t happen. So, I have to live my life listening to his music only in CD’s, but this is great too. And yes, I’m crazy about Iggy Pop too. I’ll contact Another Girl Another Planet soon! Once he wrote me a letter, and I wouldn’t sell it for 10 millions dollars! Well, have a nice weekend you all. I’ve borrowed one of Neil Young’s records, I’m gonna listen it this weekend. I love Neil too, like J. Mascis does…Sorry if sometimes my English isn’t ok. See you soon…
