hey, does anyone know why j has never played choppin live since lollapalooza 93? i have heard about every other song from WYB live except that one. i know he doesnt play feel the pain anymore, maybe cuz it was popular or whatever, but why not choppin? he plays out there all the time. and what’s up with j and mike johnson???? a falling out, or somethin else? i heard a rumor that mike was hooked on booze or something (the cover of his last solo album is good stuff), but he was an amazing bassist, and still put on one of the best live solo shows (rocking out on a mint green 6 string) i have ever seen…. i’m not 100% for sure about this but i’m almost (99%) positive he played it when I saw him in Columbus in ’95/’96, Columbus (can’t find the ticket stub!) or he played it during the Hand It Over tour. One of the two…like I said, 99% sure I’ve heard it live, but not since then. He should play it more often…it’s a great song!

OK! I just listened to it and it was definately in Columbus (Newport) for the Hand It Over tour (I think late ’96 or early ’97, still can’t find the ticket stub) I’m going to put up a post in the fav. show section and then you’ll see how I was able to remember this! I would be very surprised if J played "start choppin" during the hand it over tour. The last time I heard it was in oct. of ’94 (W/o a sound tour) they played it for their sound check. I’ve seen him over ten times since then and he has never played it. You’ll never see it on bootlegs either. Which is a shame cause i need to hear it live again.

I’m with you about Mike Johnson. I miss him too. His sense of style with his bass and his clothes can not be topped and was a necessary ingredient for Dino shows. Watt is good but doesn’t mesh with j as far as im concerned.

Actually a live version of Start Choppin is on the bootleg Keep the Freak Scene. It’s the only time I’ve ever heard it live. I would like to hear a live version of Whatever’s Cool With Me.

RD- Do you have "keep the freakscene"?
what are the other songs? is "hide" on there?
I do not know of any bootlegs with "whatevers cool…"
I do have a vhs video of a ’91 show that has "whatevers cool…" on it. The sound quality is’nt great but its the song alright. I would be happy to swap with you if you’d like?

uma’s cow- couldnt agree more about the MJ on bass. watt is great, particularly for certain songs like fury and the new stuff, but i would rather hear some mike johnson songs instead of 5 stooges covers per nite- i’ll probably be crucified by the die hard ol-skool indie rockers, but whatever. i recall an interview on 120 minutes a looong time ago with j and mike attempting to conduct an interview with louis largent i believe- he told j he was a great drummer and asked if he brought his drum kit to the mtv studios- j stared blankly and croaked "certainly not" while johnson had a pink boa on draped over his bathrobe. it was ridiculous and some of the funniest shit i’ve ever seen…

Hey mel21, check out Jeremiah’s ftp site. I uploaded the Keep the Freak Scene boot is there a while back. At least you can hear a live version that way since he doesn’t seem to play it live at any of this shows anymore.

I was at the gig when they recorded ‘Keep the Freakscene’. It was recorded at Brixton academy on 27th Feb, 1993. I boiught a copy while i was in Germany in ’94 some time. Pretty shite recording.
If you have the ‘out there’ cd single, it has ‘quest’ and ‘kracked’ on it recorded from that very same gig, but 100 times better quality. – quite funny, im just lookin at that single, its one of those 2 cd jobs and it came with some great Dino stickers- one of J and a cup of tea(?), one of mike, murph and J on a porch and one of J’s dad and a couple of ladys. Wierd stuff!!

I was at the Minneapolis show during the Hand it Over tour. Someone yellow "Start Choppin’" out and J said "hmmm, i don’t think i remember that one."
