seanParticipantAnyone who questions the female ability to play guitar should check out Drain STH, Kittie, Liona Boyd and the other women mentioned in this topic. As for guitar magazine lists they are completely unreliable. I read an article on the 100 greatest solos that rated Kurts Smells Like Teen Spirit solo higher than lots of great solos such as Brad Nowells Santeria solo. Now I’m not putting Kurt down, but anyone who listened to Nirvana while learning to play guitar (as I did) knows that there is very little technical proficiency required to play the Teen Spirit solo. Anyway, I think women musicians kick ass and I’m glad to see many of them here defending their art.

Randy JaneParticipantsean, maybe what they were saying on the solo thing wasnt technicallity, but maybe good overall solo, (goes good with song and melody). Even still Santeria….(which is my fav. Sublime song) shouldve, and could blow most anything Kurt ever did solo wise away. Im not saying anything bad about Kurt, as you all know, hes my favorite of all, but yeah…..Nirvana also beat Van Halen in Best all time bands on VH1. Drain STH is one great band!
I personally dont think playing fast solos makes a person a good guitarist. Just because Buckethead can hit a million notes in a minute and make it sound good, doesnt mean hes the best. I hear all of these people talking about how there guitar playing sucks. I think if you are happy with what you can do for the length of time youve played, then you are a good guitarist. Ive played for 9 1/2 years now, but there are all of these kids who are better than me….they may be in different styles than me and may spend more time on learning solos, but they may have also had someone teah them a lot of what they know…which is something I didnt have. Its not about who knows the most chords or riffs or who can play the fastest. Playing what you know and being happy in doing so….I think that is what its about….as long as it makes you happy.
My preaching is done for tonight….Randy Jane

malcomParticipantThat’s true, what makes Buckethead good is that he doesn’t just do straight soloing, he branches off into more ambient styling. To hear him at his best, check out Praxis (transmutations mutandi)

JavroModeratorthe guitarists in the Poppies (Pop Will Eat Itself) only had two strings on their guitars..
But, thinking about it, they were absolute twaddle.
"Give me Big Mac and Fries to go"
"I go down town and I hassle chicks
Beaver Patrol"The lead singer was called Clint, but he was also known as "Veston Pants". Think the other musicians (not sure they can be called that, but I shall take a descriptive rather than prescriptive stance) went on to form the Ozric Tentacles.

malcomParticipantFine then, how’s about some POUSA?

John DysonParticipantClint from Poppies now does film soundtracks PI is the most famous
One of the other guys went on to form Bentley Rythym Ace, not sure about the rest, but I’m fairly sure that the Ozrics were around before PWEI split up.
