humble joeParticipantHey folks,
I have four albums by the mighty Dino Jr. but Where You Been is the one that I have mixed opinions about, the other 3 (Living, Bug, Hand it over) being flat out great.Where You Been I can’t make my mind up about. I think putting Drawerings after Get Me is a pretty bad move as they are both closely related and this seems to destroy the flow of the album. I really like Goin Home and What Else is New though. And all the singles are great.
What do you think anyway? Indulgent pap or worthy successor to earlier albums?

SGParticipantWhere You Been was the first album I bought in the punk/indie/alt rock vein so I`m biased about it.It`s a great album.I agree with putting Drawerings after Get Me was`nt a smart move but both those songs are so wicked I`ll forgive that.
Without A Sound was the Dino Jr album I`m critical of,but it certainly is`nt bad or not worth hearing, all of J`s music is worth hearing.August 29, 2001 at 12:18 pm #56660
simmonsParticipantout there and not the same are two brilliant songs.not the same is a very sad song and I sometimes cry while listening to it alone in my room.

jasperParticipantWhere You Been? Best album ever recorded in the history of the universe. Superior in every way to the other Dinosaur Jr. albums. The songs are better, the guitar work is better, the solo’s are longer, louder and have more melody to them, the lyrics are far better than those of earlier records, J’s voice sounds better, and the album as a whole sounds perfect. I think putting "Drawerings" after "Get Me" is not a bad move. I put it after a soft song on a compilation I made, and that didn’t work well. I find that "Get Me" can put me in the right mood for "Drawerings." I don’t see how it can "break the flow" of the album, because it sounds the same. It does not break the flow, precisely because it’s the same kind of song.
By the way, I wrote about Where You Been before on the board. I’ll bump it for those who might be interested.

humble joeParticipantOh my word! Are you sure you are not getting carried away?!!! Best album ever recorded in the history of the universe EVER? A fine example of hyperbole I feel. Check the White Album instead.
I still think its a bit over-produced. A good record but not very engaging and lacking the passion and raw fire of Living… Some tunes are great, some not so hot. And the Get Me/ Drawerings interface. I meant it broke the flow because it was a good album until Drawerings comes in- which makes the album seem slow and repetitive cause it *is* so similar to Get Me. You know?
The last track! HA HA! I wet myself when I hear that guitar lick at the start. Van Halen anybody?
There are many great moments I confess. Goin home, out there, start choppin, not the same etc. And the artwork is great.September 6, 2001 at 3:30 pm #56663
AGAPParticipantHey Nige,
The White Album is definitely not better than any J Mascis release…just my opinon though. Agree with Jasper on the songs being cool the way they are, love them all!!! Goin Home was my theme song for a couple of years…every single friday I played that leaving where I was and goin home

SGParticipantas I said earlier the White Album I have`nt listened to in years, heard enough Beatles,no sense going back to them
I A`int Sayin sounds nothing like Van Halen to me so I don`t know what your hearing, not funny to me.
Goin Home reminds me of walking around town and checking out the music stores on a sunny day.September 6, 2001 at 8:05 pm #56665
K7 Rides AgainParticipanthave to back up jasper on this one. WYB is incredible. Tons of excellent riffing, solos, and lyrics. listen to ON THE WAY again and just ry to tell me that isn’t the most intense, hard rockin’ song you’ve heard in a while. It blows anything on LIVING away. every song is excellent, and lyrically superb. "it’s a two ton weight that’s wrapped around my chest" is a pretty good explanation of events. so much better than "yeah, there’s something really bothering me". this album is filled with excellent insights like the afore mentioned. many are quotes that i use throughout the day to day grind to help cope with all the action life brings. And NOT THE SAME…isn’t that just absolutely one of the saddest songs you’ve ever heard? don’t take this as an attack/insult, but I think you should sit down with an open mind and give WYB a few more listens and really try to get into it. If you still don’t like it than hey, that’s cool…but I think there’s some stuff there your just missing

BartmanParticipantI guess it’s all a matter of taste, because for me WYB is one of the best albums ever made
and the white album… well, let’s just say I don’t really like it
Enjoy your weekend everyone

Chicago_FogParticipant"Where You Been", for me, is far and away my favorite album of all time. I have been listening to it for years and I have never once gotten tired of it or never not wanted to put it in and either drive or chill to it. It is the only album that has survived the test of time. I am now 25 yrs old and I got when it came out. I think I was like 14. Think about that. That is freaking crazy. I am a totally different person now from when I was 14 *points to BMW* but still after all those phases, events and still -it rocks my world. I buy it for people and give it out like candy. Not everyone finds "Where You Been" to be so life changing as I have. Every time I buy a J /FOG/JR album I’m looking for those loud guitars, the never ending solos, the power and grace that is "Where You Been" It hasn’t been recreated yet and although I like everything else by J -man to have a real follow up to "Where You Been" For one it would sell like hot cakes and two I think the majority of us Dino/J/Fog fans would have another rallying point. J I know you read this stuff, Man hook it up! -The Drums, the Guitars, the Power!
-Recreate the magic! [ September 07, 2001: Message edited by: Ryan Atkins ]

SGParticipantA few years ago I heard a guy on the local college station saying that Where You Been sucked and that Green Mind is Dinosaur`s best.
I talked to a guy in a music store once who said Green Mind sucked and that Where You Been is the best Dinosaur album.
Music seems to be something we always disagree on.September 7, 2001 at 4:34 pm #56669
Chicago_FogParticipantGood point, salamiguy. Beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder.

humble joeParticipantI apologise dudes. Upon further, more considerate investigation WYB rocks like a monkey! Please don’t paint me as a bad guy here, I don’t think I ever outrightly slagged it off, my intention was always to find other views about it.
I agree now that the album has a great atmosphere and that many songs are some of the best J has done. It is fantastic. They all rock and roll and have soul and are great. I guess it’s not a very lo-fi album, perhaps that put me off initially. I will stand by my feeling that Drawerings and Get Me should have been seperated (IMHO).
Am I forgiven?
