SGParticipantJavro suggested that we could talk about when we first heard Dino songs and what the song means to you and what it makes you think of.
I like the idea, here`s some from me:Puke And Cry-first Dino song I heard,it was in July 91,a guy on the radio was playing songs about his vacation that sucked, guess he thought the title said it all.what struck me the most was J`s voice,it sounded awesome!and the drums, these fast fills that just kicked ass, that tune is`nt a guitar focused one so I did`nt realize what a great guitar player J was until I heard some of the other songs, the guitar playing is good, there`s nothing wrong with it,I guess J does`nt want to do a solo on every song. The "Come on down" lyric is catchy.
Repulsion-I think this was the next song I heard, the same guy who played Puke And Cry played it because he saw a movie called Repulsion and thought the song fitted what the movie was about. The song has personal meaning to me,I felt like the darkness was dragging me back home.
Show Me The Way-the show I heard it on was playing all cover songs, this take on Frampton was cool,I love the way J sings it and the wah wah sounds wicked.
Sideways-an unusual tune but cool nonetheless, very little singing and no electric guitar, the bass is there though, the vibes was a cool idea.I think it was around May 92 I heard this.the guitar riff is catchy, some people think it`s boring but I think it`s cool. The song makes me think of afternoons in high school doing work when you wish you were somewhere else, the sunshine coming through the windows of the classroom.

SGParticipantyeah, good stories Tony,I should have been more personal with mine,I can write personal posts sometimes, like when I got Where You Been I nearly got killed or how I walked several miles to sell some comic books to have enough money to buy Bug.
I bought Where You Been in March 93,we were having alot of snow here and the roads wre icy,I got my Mom to drive me to the mall, the thing was it was across this heavy traffic area of ramps and speeding cars,my Mom did`nt think she could do it but decided to try anyway, the way over was ok,my Mom did`nt really know what lane to go in but it worked out ok,I went in and bought it on tape since I did`nt have enough money for the cd,the way back was the problem,my Mom went in one lane which I said was ok to go in,WRONG!a car comes speeding toward us and almost hit us,cars started honking horns, anyway,we got through it and I bought my first album in this kind of music.
The Bug story I`ll talk about another time.October 22, 2001 at 6:31 pm #56803

SGParticipantYeah,I had computer problems again when I posted that, all day I had no problem, last post I write of the day it stalls on me,so I hit it again and it posted twice, first time that happened to me here.
I started a new thread other then interpretations because it said Bug interp. and I wanted to to talk about other songs besides Bug.I did`nt tell my Green Mind story, the library had it in their bookmobile, you know those buses with a mini library in it,I requested it to be moved to the library even though it would be cool to get on the bookmobile and find it there. It was a few weeks after I bought Where You Been,it was on tape,I taped it,it was in pretty good shape(Husker Du`s Candy Apple Grey was a mess,I think someone lost it in their toilet and then pulled it back out, luckily they had another copy)I did buy it on cd eventually of course.
The Bug story:I heard that this comic series I had was going up in value so I decided to take the first 3 issues and sell them to the comic store downtown, school was off that day so I headed off,it was downhill on the way there so it was easy that way,I took a back way for part of the walk through a dirt road and this small field, there did`nt seem to be anyone around until I crossed the highway and for some reason looked back and saw a guy come out of the woods, that spooked me,he must have hid there when I passed,I kept walking there was houses and people around so I did`nt worry about the weird guy behind me,the rest of the walk went ok,got to the store and hoping I`d get a good amount of cash, nope!he offered me 20 bucks,at least it was enough to buy Bug so I sold the 3 and headed back, took the dirt road back though I was worried about that guy,but it was easier then taking the highway so I went,no one was around,it was incredibly quiet, had no problem and went home, bought Bug next time I went to the record store,on tape because they did`nt have the cd.October 25, 2001 at 7:52 am #56805
Calimero jr.ParticipantFirst Dino song I’ve heard is Thumb, it was on a mix-rock tape a friend gave me…….I was walking in the woods near my home around end October 1993, yellow leaves falling all around, late afternoon golden sunlight, some nice weed…. :bong: magical moment
I really loved the mellotron sound, J’s voice and when the solo arrived, well you all know what I mean
Since then this song as always been related with autumn…..I can listen to it in spring, close my eyes, and in seconds I can be in the same feeling as the first time I heard it…too nice.
I guess that only good songs and good bands have this kind of magical power….and Dino is surely one of the top ones !!October 25, 2001 at 9:31 am #56806
BradParticipanti’m gonna come across like some old dinosaur now, but i was like 16 when i heard dino, and the date was december 23rd, and it was on john peel’s festive 50 in 1988 and the song was "freak scene" and as they say the rest is history…
October 25, 2001 at 6:15 pm #56807
SGParticipantTony-Peel`s festive 50 is his personal favs for the year,so Brad means the studio version of Freakscene.
I was wondering about when Dino first played at the BBC too,my guess would be around the time of Green Mind.October 25, 2001 at 6:29 pm #56808
SGParticipantThe studio version I mean from Bug.
Here`s more first Dino moments:
Little Furry Things-the beginning struck me as being pretty awesome, screaming and loud wah wah guitar, then when Lee and J sing together sounded wicked, there`s not alot of lyrics going on in that song, not as spare as The Lung but still not much. The end when the guitar sounds like shhhhhhhhhhh seemed to work.October 26, 2001 at 10:17 am #56809
SGParticipantTony-I remember those Peel Sessions ep`s,there used to be one of the Triffids that I used to see around here.
Peel and BBC sessions I think are the same thing.
Cool that you found that rock pic.October 26, 2001 at 11:35 am #56810
SGParticipantThe Triffids were/are a band from Austraila, den buck is into them,I `ve seen that Peel sessions cd around here a few times.

passionParticipant…the first song i heard was OUT THERE and i will never never forget that moment! I found J s voise so…"clever" and "talkative’…his music was just what i wanted to hear the words were just me talking …
…the second one was KRACKED i really love that song! From the begining till the end i felt like if i would compose a song…that would have been it!
…endless moments with Js company full of passion sensitivity tears memories hopes power…
…i feel happy knowing that a man like him lives out there…and gives music such value… October 26, 2001 at 9:37 pm #56812
ScreamingTreeParticipantFeel the Pain-2000
Fliping through the satelite tv music stations I hear the riff for the song, and for some reason beyond my explanation I recognize it even though I’ve never heard the song before. Some sort of spirtual type deal, it was heavy. I had heard of them because I read Come As You Are where Kurt speaks of Dinosaur Jr a lot, and I guess I kinda figured they must be good if he liked em. Kinda foolish I know. Its just weird thinking if I hadn’t flipped to that channel what my life would be like now. October 29, 2001 at 3:15 pm #56813
passionParticipant…thanks for the nice words Kerb-dogma…its so difficult to explain in words the effect of J s music in my life…!!!

JavroModeratorfirst peel sessions were 88 and 89. Not all BBC sessions were recorded for Peel – some maybe for any of Steve Lamacq, Jo "with it" Whiley or Mark Goodier (long ago). The first time I heard J was on this first session, and then bought the jayloumurph bootleg.
kerby – Going for a song means going for not very much money (ie you only need to "sing" for it).
See ya.

passionParticipant…hey Kerb-dogma i agree with you…sometimes it doesnt seem so simple though…i mean i find it so …perfect(the fact that i feel so close to J s music)…
…i really cant live without music -almost twenty four hours a day-for so many years…diffirent tapes for diffirent moments…my best friend…but with Js music is something special…he says he just wanted to compose something that he would like to listen to and i feel that if i could compose something that would be it!
…i dont know if i make it easy for you to understand how i feel…its such a compination! -
