SGParticipantHey Jeremiah-That Olivia Tremor Control album is very good.bought it back in 96 after I heard "Green Typewriters" on the radio,my fav lyric is "Perception is an ocean",always run that through my head. For those who don`t know OTC it`s very Beachboys/Beatles stuff done on a 4 track, full of cool hooks and lyrics, sounds like psychadelic cartoon music.
problably on of the 90`s most overlooked albums.
The elephant six stuff like OTC is great, love Neutral Milk Hotel as well, who sound like Syd Barrett, very cool stuff and great lyrics.
Tom-that Grand Prix record by Teenage Fanclub is great,my fav TF album.July 20, 2001 at 4:57 pm #64977

I have to give major credit to Saturnine for opening my eyes/ears to the the elephant six sound!! Really only been exposed to them over the last 6-8 months or so and have been pretty blown away. Everything I have heard thus-far has been added to my ‘have to have list’.
Your Beatles/Beachboys comparison is pretty dead on too July 20, 2001 at 9:55 pm #64978
Bucky RamoneParticipantMy current favourites:

dimpfelmoserParticipant1) the wedding present – singles 89-91. One of the very few CDs I bought in America. Got that at the Cinerama gig from David Gedge himself. Only $10,- for a double CD. What a bargain. Shows the Wedding Present really at their peak. Most of the songs were produced by Steve Albini and he really brought out the best in them. That soaring guitars are so perfect. Including their Pavement cover of Box Elder, the Tom Jones Cover of It´s not Unusual and the Velvet Undergrounds She´s my best friend. Brilliant.
2. Break´n´Bossa Volume 4. Italian Compilation of contemporary clubtunes with a brazilian flavour. Kids, it´s just that time of the year. So relaxed and cheerful. Get the cocktails ready.
3. Elvis` greatest hits from the 60s. Never been a big fan of Elvis, but since I´ve been to Graceland and shed some tears at his grave I appreciate the whole schmalziness of him. Return to Sender, It´s now or Never, Devil in Disguise and the spoken part of Are you lonesome tonight? are so hilarious. Gotta love that.
4. Easy Tempo vol.7 (I think). Soundtracks of Italian Soft Pornos from the late 60s/early seventies. More cheesy listening. Lots of Hammond Organ and more Samba beats.
It´s summertime.
5. Boss Hog (95). Still my favourite album of the last decade. Have to have some noisy stuff after all this mellow swinging. Works every time.

JavroModeratorWedding Present rule. First time I heard Brassneck I thought they were awful, but then when they released a single every month of the year and stuck them all on an album, every track was a killer.
Never needed anyone
till I saw your face
and I looked in your eyes
and I saw you(cue white boy northern english band noise on geeetar).
I think they kinda paved the way for me getting into J’s voice, proving that emotion is more important in singing than trained vocal talent. I guess that’s also why I like Archers of Loaf/Eric Bachmann so much too.

tomParticipantFlaming Lips- Clouds Taste Metallic-I love everything this band does. A very underrated band.
Birthday Party-Hits- Nick Cave is a brilliant song writer. The Birthday Party were so raw and aggressive.
The Mermen-A Glorious Lethal Euphoria-The sticker on the promo copy of this cd I purchased read, "Dick Dale meets Sonic Youth". I now listen to the Mermen more than I listen to Dick Dale and Sonic Youth. J, Jimi, and Jim Thomas (Mermen) are my favorite guitar players.
Teenage Fanclub-Grand Prix-Great band, great cd.
Travis-new cd-They remind me of Teenage Fanclub, which to me is a good thing.
Radiohead- OK Computer-I respect the fact that they’ve decided to go in a different direction, but this is the last Radiohead album I liked. I hate fake drums!!!!!!!!!!July 21, 2001 at 11:16 am #64982

Actually, the Single compilation I got was not the Hitparade thing, but some American only thing (the reason why I hadn´t bought it already) comprising the Bizarro/Seamonsters singles (including Brassneck, now what is a Brassneck actually, can anyone shed some light here?), and some rare and live stuff. But yes David Gedge voice certainly is not everyones cup of tea; actually most of the folks I know in Britain hate the Wedding Present cause they can´t stand the singing.
You must by now be fed up with my constant references to my American trip, but hey, it was such an important experience to me, and now so many things relate to it. So work with me here and since Jeremiah listed Grandaddys Sophtware Slump not so long ago, I can´t help myself and simply have to tell you how appropiate those songs are to listen to when you cruise through the Californian National Parks. We even drove past the Crystal Lake. It was perfect.

RobertParticipantPushin Scandinavian Rock To The Man Vol 1 and 2 are currently burning up my cd player. As for vinyl, some "vintage" Hellacopters, The Flaming Sideburns and Gluecifer are working their magic. And on july 25. I’m going to a Hellacopters and Sahara Hotnights show -so the future is looking bright

AGAPParticipantHey Robert,
Good to hear from you, The Hellacopters are never far from any of my disc players these days…definitely hooked!!!! Just heard a couple Hellacopters songs for the first time…Crimson Ballroom and Have Mercy On The Children…OUTSTANDING to say the least.
Wondering if you have heard the Hellacopters/Adam West single where they cover a couple of Damned tunes…only on vinyl though. Hellacopters need to put out a disc with all their singles and b sides…thats my current dream. Glad the futures looking so bright, will be thinking of you on the 25th…sounds like a very cool show Allison

Have you ever witnessed the Hellacopters live? I have to admit, that I went home with mixed feelings. Posing as posing can. Good clean fun, no question about it, but yeah, bit like being in a theme park. The dreaded term "Pubrock" springs to mind. Like the Cramps were neat in 85 -spot on-, but four years later it was just a parody of a parody. Like the Ramones in the late 80s.
Speaking of the Cramps, only yesterday I went to see the uncensored version of "Faster Pussycat, Kill! Kill! and it´s such a great film. Gotta love it. If it ever comes your way, you have to see it. Rock`n`Roll indeed.

AGAPParticipantHey Dimpfelmoser,
I know what your saying about the posing with the Hellacopters, thing is most of it is a huge tribute to their influences. Cover of the Payin The Dues Hellacopters disc is a nod to the MC5 disc The American Ruse…definitely cool to put your influences out there like that. The guitar excess/posing is also very influenced by Sonic Smith and Wayne Kramer and more than a few of my fav guitar players.
Check out the video for Toy’s and Flavors by the Hellacopters…then if you can check out the pic on the cover of the MC5 Teen Age Lust disc..you will see what I mean. In Crimson Ballroom some of the lines are directly related to being Sonics etc fans…going straight on Shaking Street to that place they don’t measure the beat. Super Sonic..got Electrophonic tonic..are just a few examples of some of the lines used to pay tribute to their oh so cool influences. So being a huge Sonic/Kramer/Stooges/Birdman/etc etc fan I love The Hellacopters…posing and all. Have you checked out all the stuff the Hellacopters have released, absolutely amazing amount of very cool tunes!!! They have done some singles with Scott Morgan of the Hydromatics and SRB that kill me every time. So yeah they have their excesses but hey definitely cool with me.I have to admit though I had one of Roberts Coyote Ugly guilty pleasure moments when I first checked out that video for Toys and Flavors…WOW. Gave my head a shake and watched it again Hey I’m talking about the double kit and matching vox amps…well partially anyways
Never seen them but currently checking credit card limits for air fare

AGAPParticipantHey,
As I am working on a plan to turn everyone onto the Hellacopters here is a link to their site
[URL=http://www.hellacopters.com/main/indexIn the picture section there is a really cool pic of The Nomads with Wayne Kramer, Jello Biafra, Chris Bailey etc etc. Wayne Kramer looks like he is surrounded by his children…very cool…whoops its under the news section from the Hultsfred gig…where Mascis checked them out.
Anyways check out that video D hopefully you will be converted. High Visiblity by The Hellacopters is an amazing disc…the best they have put out in my opinion.

RobertParticipantHey Allison, I’m sorry to say that I’ve hadn’t goten hold of that mighty fine vinyl release you mentioned -but it sure rocks! As for a collection of b-sides and singles I’ve listed my Hellacopters collection below, where a title is repeated it indicates that there’s both an EP and single. I’m allways on the lookout for more, especially vinyl!
Glad you posted the link, lots of fun stuff to watch and read there. And I’m looking forward to see you on a concert soon!!Dimpf, -as Allison says, you gotta take the posing for what it is -homage to their heroes. It’s just a part of the package really. SGParticipantStill have`nt checked out the Hellacopters yet,my local music store had Dissapointment blues and supershitty, but someone bought them before I got a chance to get them!Saw another Hellacopters though,a split disc with another band, the price looks steep but I might consider checking it out.
Love As Laughter seemed to be out of your character Allison;but yesterday I checked out"I`m A Bee" and I can see why you like them, you see Sam Jayne from LAL was in Lync who I heard a couple of good songs by and I heard Built To Spill cover LAL`s"singing sores make perfect swords"which with the Lync stuff was indie rock sounding,I thought "I`m A bee" would be like that too,I was surprised that it sounded like Stooges/MC5 stuff!
Trivia:MC5`s manager John Sinclair was in the white panthers,60`s radical group, who`s current indie fav band`s mother was involved too with the white panthers? -
