Randy JaneParticipantI’m just glad someone else has a Jagmaster. woohoo!
How do you like those pickups as opposed to the stock ones? How do they sound and all that junk? Also, I’ve never heard of them actually, so where did you find them?R/J

RSTguitarsParticipantAfter modding several of my pedals, I’ve now started building my own pedals. So far I’ve done a treble booster (purple in honor of J), a Big Muff clone with a few improvements, and a distortion based on the old Jordan BossTone.

I like it a lot more now. Humbuckers suck with the Big Muff. It sounds way to garbled or whatever you want to call it. The Dream 90s cut. They make it more like the guitars it’s named after. A lot brighter. The Dream 90s are cool because they’re the same size as a humbucker…it did take me some dremel-sanding of the pocket to get it wide enough, but the Jagmaster pickguard is more fit to go right around those pickups.
You can check them out at http://www.guitarfetish.com”>http://www.guitarfetish.com. Here’s a pic before I changed out the neck one. I’m thinking of going back to this configuration. Drop the neck one into another guitar I have.
I love it a lot more now. I love the cutting sound.

Randy JaneParticipantWell, after I posted that, I went on Ebay and saw them and I have seen them for a few years now but forgot all about them. LOL. Anyways, that’s cool, I was wanting to change the incredibly bassy tone this thing has. Mine is red, and is a full scale with black pickguard. I thought about getting Warmoth to make me a tortoise guard with P-90’s in it and keep everything else the same. I don’t know what I’ll end up doing though.

jebus_the_llamaParticipantif you didn’t want to route it(im assuming you’re talking about a jagmaster?) which wou would have to do if you wanted to drop p-90’s in it. You could go the humbucker sized p-90 route.

SonicDParticipantbuying a holy grail next!

Randy JaneParticipantHoly Grails are pretty nice. My cousin has a Lonestar Strat that came with the Holy Grail in it. The first American Strat to come from the factory with a humbucker….cool guitar.
I care nothing about a guitars value. I don’t care to route the bejeezus out of a guitar to get the tones I want. I barely have any completely stock guitars anymore and the Jagmaster is one of the few stock ones. I just want to make sure that the pickups I get are going to be pickups that I like. I don’t care if they are $150 or $12, that makes no difference to me.

You could go the humbucker sized p-90 route. You wouldn’t have to route the Jagmaster, as it’s got the ‘pool’ routing in it. Most everything under the pickguard is open, it’d be easy to put in regular P-90s…just have to make/purchase a new pickguard to give you the space for the pickup. I’ve thought about putting in a Seymour Duncan Jazzmaster pickup, but I was worried about the hum. The Dream-90s from GFS is REALLY quiet, so I chose it.
I’m not a fan of spending a lot of money on electric guitars. You can do anything by changing the wiring and pickups. If I ever got the money to use, sure, I’d buy a Jazzmaster or an old SG…which ever I lusted after most that day. As it stands, I can’t…but I can make a guitar sound REALLY close to what I want. The only "stock" guitar I own is a Peavey T-60 and I’m modding it out now. Keeping the original wiring and pickup, but I routed out the body to lighten it, put a new back on, binding and am making a pickguard with only 1 pickup instead of 2. So, I will own nothing the way it came from the factory soon.

Randy JaneParticipantThere needs to be more people who understand this method. It REALLY does not matter if your guitar costed $3,500 more than my $30 Squier Strat….I like my Strat, it sounds like an old ’58 Strat. For me, it’s perfect, Chicken Picken, Fusion, Reggae, Metal, Blues, Jazz etc. You can mod your guitars if you know how that is to get what you want out of them. It may take a while to figure out the things you like don’t get the tones you want. An example of this would be that I like the looks of humbuckers, a lot of guitarists that I like play with humbuckers….but with my style and setup, I hate all of them. Anyways…..I’m rambling on and now it doesnt even make sence to me. Sorry……

sfbarkerParticipantYeah, for me, I pick up a guitar and go off of how it feels in my hands. Are the frets good? Could I play it a long time comfortably? I prefer thin necks so that’s something I look for. I love Tele sounds but their necks bother me. So I’ve sanded a few of them down…I have a Squier 51 I bought and it doesn’t bother me as much. I think my hand slides easier on the unfinished neck.
I love getting older, beat up or cheap guitars and making them into what I want. I much more rewarding than paying a bunch of money for something and not being 100% satisfied with it.

Randy JaneParticipantI sometimes pick up new guitars (not going to name names) and set them back down pretty quickly because of the frets not being finished properly. If I don’t feel that the company took much time or put any care into the guitar, why should I? I don’t care about the neck size or shape, if I don’t like it, it goes through a ton of sanding from 60 grit to 2000 grit and all in between. I sand until I love. Pickups are kind of a big thing though, if I almost like the tone of the guitar, I know I can make it a very nice sounding guitar with a few "mods". I usually hate new factory finishes as they are FULL of flaws now. I’ve played more bumpy/rough finished guitars lately that came from a factory than I have done myself. Makes me think that my finishes don’t fully suck, lol.
Now if I could get this way with amps, I would be living a dream come true. I guess I need to go to school for electronics to learn the vast amount of stuff that I don’t know. I know the basics though…..I even bought almost all of the stuff to build a DOD YJM308 pedal, but never did because I couldnt figure out a way to point to point wire the board. I don’t want any of my stuff that I build…even pedals to be on a PCB. I have a lot of REALLY cool ideas for bass amps too. But I just don’t know how to make it happen. One day I’ll just try it and fail….then try again in about 2 more years lol.
