AnnastefkaParticipantI have shared this story only in an e-mail with someone here, but I don’t think I have posted it. It’s one of my favorites,(Other than hearing YOU playing Start Choppin’)
I was in an antique store in Bowman Georgia, and I was watching an elderly woman inspecting a few quilts she had placed out across the back of a couch. I also love antique quilts, I am always on the lookout for "charm" quilts or ones made from old shot cotton. I love to look and see the patterns, often drawing little reminders for myself on small pieces of paper so I can replicate them later. We talked together for a few minutes and then she said to me "I am just obsessed with old quilts" I told her I have a few obsessions also. "Oh, do tell!" she begged. " Well there is this songwriter and I am just obsessed with his music" "Who is it? Perhaps I know him?" "No, I don’t think so, he is not from around here." ( She was a in her 70’s, I’m sure, and very sweet and VERY Southern) "Well, whats his name." she said almost pushy. "It’s J Mascis" "Oh,you mean the fellow with the wagon"……..I really nearly fell out. I thought for a moment I must have entered the Twilight Zone. Then she went on to explain that her husband was sick in the late 80’s and she was shopping at the health food store for some alternative healing "stuff" She went twice a week for almost a year, and "I’ll tell you they just loved to play that "Wagon" song over and over in there" They(the clerks) told her about the music and even showed her a picture of J. Priceless moment

SGParticipantWhen I bought More Light the guy at the register was like ‘Man,did you hear this yet?My brother has it and it`s amazing!".I go back a couple of weeks later and he asks me what I thought about it and we chat a bit more.A couple of months later he sees me again and asks if I still listen to it,and I say of course I do J is one of my faves. He tells me he found a Dino t shirt in a used clothing store. The record store closed and I did`nt see him again, maybe he`ll join up here someday
Another time I walk into a used record store and they`re blasting Little Fury Things really loud
one of the few times I heard any record store play any Dino.

PestoParticipantWhen we went in Js station wagon to Irving Plaza, innnn 1982 then slept a couple of hours at Homestead reords producers apartment in ?Queens?, playing the minutemen "My first Bells" cassette, record shopping at St Marks place. What ever happened to Artey?
Going to Hampshire parties in Johannes’ beetle, with Charlie J an Johannes, Johannes and J kicking Deadheads with their doc martens boots in crowded parties and having them run after them. I was kind of mortefied. The Dead were playing "Gimme some lovin".
We were outside the crowdded party, and suddenly jon, J and Johannes ran out the door, with a ‘hippie’ in hot pursuit. We ran as well, as it was Johannes beetle and we would be stranded by these pranksters.September 7, 2005 at 4:50 pm #112256
lookitssamParticipantI did that once.

AnnastefkaParticipantWho would kick a Deadhead?, I hope you didn’t do anything like that Pesto.(Sounds like it wasn’t you) I married a Deadhead, I can’t even tell you why except I just wanted something different, He is so "kind" and all of his deadhead friends with their organic fruit and little hippie babies in slings on their backs, they were so sweet. Who would kick a deadhead? Now, a Rainbow family, I have kicked a Rainbow family person, that is kicked their ass off of my property. Some of those people need a good kick in the pants.
Lookitsam, I hope you are talking about record shopping on St. Marks Place and not kicking innocent people.
Y’all would have never passed the rigourous Psychological profile testing the government puts you through, never, you can’t kick hippies, my God they are peace loving.

Never listen to the Eleventh Dream Day song Bomb The Mars Hotel
The irony is that Ira Kaplan of Yo La Tengo is a Deadhead and he`s played with Eleventh Dream Day on occasion.
I`m kinda so so about The Dead though one of my friends on another site swears they`re one of the best and he`s an old HC kid.September 8, 2005 at 4:19 pm #112260
PestoParticipantNo, no quarrel with deadheads/’hippies’ though I don’t even call them that.. It is hard not to though- these are really a distinct tribe of people, ha ha. Johannes, this german crazy boy, lifting his boom box out the windows at passers by (as if they cared). We all thought it was funny how wild he was. He did this kicking thing- it was a pretty mellow party and I saw nothing to be a jerk like that about. Pretty offensive, embarrassing.

King TubbyParticipantShit man, going to a Hampshire party alone is enough to get anybody all riled up. Fuckin’ Shaggy Doo tosspots. Even worse than the old Bay State crowd. Still can’t believe that place is history, but don’t really care either. Where do the wieners hang out now?

AnnastefkaParticipantI wish Tubby’s post came with a glossary

Hampshire College is a hippy school where trustfund kids go and make up their own curricula. Totally self-indulgent wankery. Among the Five Colleges in the Amherst/Northampton area it’s said that each school represents a character from Scooby Doo, based upon its typical student population. Amherst = Biff; Smith = Thelma; Mount Holyoke = Daphne; Hampshire = Shaggy; and UMASS = Scooby. Hence Shaggy Doo tosspots ("tosspot" is an unflattering designation, rooted in "tosser," which is British slang for jerkoff).
The Bay State was an old bar next to the Pearl Street club that functioned as the unofficial hub of the local music scene in Northampton. It’s now closed (which I only found out upon returning to Noho to see Dino this summer), or rather, turned into a very yuppie-ish looking restaurant and bar. Wonder where the grumpy old bartender is now?
Wieners are the annoying music scenesters who used to hang out at the Bay State seven nights a week. Every scene has its fair share of wieners, especially if that scene had at one time generated national attention, like Northampton’s did for a brief period in the early-to-mid-90s.
