We all know cassettes, 8tracks, FM radio, and even Sony MD suck – what’s the best medium?

If I could magically change my cd`s into vinyl,I would.

I wrote a 19 page essay on this topic once in high school;included Neil Young`s opinion on it,he hates cd`s and digital tech and hopes that someday cd sound could have the vinyl sound somehow.

I would too, then sell them, because some of the stuff I have on CD would be worth money on vinyl. Then I’d buy the CDs again and pocket the left over $$ and bitch and moan about how I had an awesome vinyl collection and lost if for $$$.

I suck.

Hey,

It is very hard to beat the convenience of CD, small portable music ready to go and be played in any number of cheap portable devices. I do like vinyl, sound is much warmer etc but just love the convenience of discs. Now those covers on discs suck thou, the plastic ones that I always break into a few pieces I much prefer the cardboard fold out cd covers versus those jewel box deals

Allison, yes, quite convenient CDs are, but the sound of a warm 7" wins my heart every time.

What no 733+ posters picking DAT?

You know, sometimes I think the shrink wrap is stronger than the jewelbox. . .The only problem with the cardboard sleeves are that they’re irreplacible, once they break, you aren’t going to replace them.

Indeed, and yes, that is a problem. I’ll take Jewel Cases for my CDs (and not those European slimline craps) and just be sufficed to replace them every few years.

Never did have a discman so I would`nt know about the convience of taking cd`s with you. They are convient in their size for storing as oppossed to records.
Jewel cases I think are the best to put them in,the cardboard type can be the most friggin annoying things on earth,I swore so many times at the damn Shellac cd "At Action Park" for not fitting into my cd rack!Of course Albini problably did that on purpose because he hates cd buyers(he calls them sub human scum)If I could get Shellac on vinyl I would but they don`t have it here and I don`t like mail ordering.
Last year I bought the Matador 10th anniversary 3 cd set;when I sold it to a used store the guy said the cd`s were scratched because of the packaging;the way I was sliding in the discs caused them to scratch.

The only thing I don’t like about portable cd players are the stupid cases they make for them. I’m not going to entrust my valukble music to a supethin plastic sleeve in a soft nylon case. But I suppose you’ve heard enough bitching from me.

Hey,

The convenience thing is a big deal for me, car, discman, portable stereo, computer at work…can’t do that with vinyl. I hate jewel cases, I always smash em up…just a clutz I guess. I like the fold old cardboard cd cases, like the Sparklehorse Good Morning Spider case…really like that one. The new Sparklehorse though, get the vinyl…you will hate the case. All kinds of crap to get it into the slide in case…driving me nuts!!!

Yeah not all cardboard cases are bad, like Good Morning Spider was cool, but some of them are really annoying;the most recent Lucinda Williams cd for example, everytime I put it in the rack you really have to jam it in there.
I saw the new Sparklehorse cd so I know what you mean, they don`t have the vinyl so it looks like I`ll get the cd someday.
If you don`t have a cd rack then carboard cases and those slimline cases are`nt a problem, but just about everybody has some kind of rack or case for their cd`s so it`s dumb.

I should apologize for being so cranky this morning.anyway,my cd player is 12 years old,the button is shot.most times it does`nt open;at least I have the computer to play cd`s on.I could`nt do that if I had a broken turntable.
Jewel cases are`nt perfect but neither is cardboard or any other weird paper cases.
Someone should invent a new type of something to store cd`s in,what I don`t know;I`m sure someone problably has given hard thought to this dilemma.

Salami -you sold your Matador 10 th anniversary cd? Very disturbing news indeed
Vinyl has a richer sound, but heavy spinning takes its toll, and cds are smaller and hence more practical -so I mostly depend on cds to work the magic for me, and buy some vinyl goodies on the side.

May I suggest DVD cases? Better artwork, better storage, better liner notes.
