Not to offend any poor souls out there, BUT I often see Modest Mouse mentioned on this site. Does anyone else out there think these guys suck? Personally, I think they ramble on and on and not in a good way. We’ve already got one Built To Spill and they are great and innovative. I wouldn’t go as far as calling them posers, well actually I would. Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t see what all the hype is about with modest mouse. Anyone agree? Come on, you all know it.

Add another to the list with Jeremiah’s wife and Allison’s husband…

(Sorry, inside moderator joke. )

They seem to be an "either you love them or hate them type of band." I haven’t known many people who were in the middle about them. Personally, I love them, but to each their own…

Never got the Built to Spill thing though. They don’t sound that much alike to me…

Have you ever seen MM live? I seriously doubt it cause than you would know that they are the most unpretentious band of all. Anti posers in a way. Second time I saw them they supported Built to Spill and just blew them away. Then did the final encore together. Next time they were headlining and played for nearly three hours. Best gig for ages. Isaak really does something new with the guitar here and there. I always thought of them as a kind of Pixies who like to jam. Having said that, I have to admit that the Moon & Antarctica was a bit of a dissapointment (overproduced and not enough noise) but The lonesome crowded west is a real masterpiece. And you never get sick of it cause the songs are quite complex. Lyrics are good as well.
Can you ask for more?

Glad to hear dimpfelmoser defending the Mouse.
You`re right they do have good lyrics and the jams are good as well, not boring like the usual jams a band would do,if "Cowboy Dan" or "Truckers Atlas" run over 10 min ,it`s worth it.
The BTS comparison is said alot, two guys at the local college station here thought when the Mouse`s 1st record came out that MM was Built To Spill disguising themself!

you’re right I haven’t seen them live so maybe I’m spouting off too soon. I guess as far as "post-punk’ or "emo" or whatever the hell you want to call it, these guys just don’t do it for me. I’ve heard their albums and tried to like it. His voice bugs me (and I like strange voices) and I guess I never really focused in on the lyrics because the music bores me to death. Hopefully their live shows do something totally different. They’re probably good guys n all, just not for me. I guess i go through a habit of weeding out the hoards of new "indie" bands because there is just a slough of them that all seem so moderate. Not to push anymore buttons, but I also think Smashing Pumkins are far too overated. I’ve seen them live too. Granted, Corgan is a great guitarist, but again, does nothing for me. I guess i kinda liked that 1979 song though. Just thought I’d start a bit of a debate here. What bands do you think are overated?

There`s some live MM at mp3.palukaville.net
there`s also this site called indiepoplive that has several modest mouse concerts but it`s been down recently.
it`s at crystal-night.com/~indiepoplive
Overrated bands:
pumpkins
korn(Hey dimp,they`re Zorn fans)
U2
radiohead
papa roach
blink 182(ever see that Simpsons episode where aliens abduct Clinton and Dole and Homer accidently releases Clinton and Dole into outer space naked, you think we can do the same to blink?)

I have Radiohead’s first three (that I know of) albums. Pablo Honey, The Bends, and OK Computer. I really like the first two. They’re just basic, good, rock music. But OK Computer, didn’t impress me that much, even though a lot of people thought it was the greatest thing ever bestowed upon the human race.

I haven’t bothered with Kid-A or Amnesiac yet, so I’ll have to withhold my judgement for now, but I’m not chomping at the bit to get them.

Maybe if I find them in the cheap bin one day…

LOL. I think I get it.

Inkling, I think Modest Mouse is pretty good but I see why people would not like them. They’re definitely a love or hate band.

Son, you would have lost all cred in my mind had you added NIN to that list.

also overrated:
NIN

If you like em Jaron,as well as Pumpkins and Radiohead, that`s ok;I`m critical of big alt-rock acts, that`s just me.
If you like NIN`s mega angst, try listening to Big Black or The Swans, they`re not as cheesy as Reznor.
Glad to hear your checking out Modest Mouse and Man Or Astroman, alot of people who listen to popular alt bands would`nt even bother trying to listen to indie bands,so you get cool points from me.

Well, I’ll listen to most anything. I agree, alot of alt rock fans won’t listen to indie. But also, alot of indie fans, I’ve found, seem to high and mighty to listen to "sell-out" alt. rock [not you personally, just making conversation]. There really is not a huge difference between alt and indie in my mind, but there seems to be a big rift between them.

I visit quite a few MBs and BBSs and it seems to be this way. Here, Radiohead gets dogged. Over on the SP BBS, Dino Jr., Modest Mouse, and the such get no love. It’s ridiculous. And the thing is, alot of alt fans are looking for a "revolution" – something to take down pop music. But they just don;t realize that the next big alt. movement won’t sound like classic 95 alt. "The next Nirvana will not sound like Nirvana."

And that’s why I post about both music styles in both forums. When we being to realize that the two styles aren’t that different, we take the first step towards unification of rock.

Alot of the battle between pop alt and indie is mainsteam vs underground culture.there`s so many pop alt fans because that`s all they know, the videos they see,the radio they listen to,they`re satisfied with the music so they see no point in listening to indie stuff, why would you want to listen to a band no one`s heard of?it`s a status quo thing, they want to listen to what thier friends like and what gets told to them what`s cool from mainstream vid and radio play and music stores displaying the next cool thing.
Indie fans usually heard the music from college radio, which seems to have changed over the years, indie rock has taken some harsh blows, the electronic scene for one,the early 90`s were such a rememberable time in indie rock then after awhile it lost some steam, the electronic revolution began and indie rock lost alot of fans.
It seems people are`nt adventurous enough for diffrent music,I think jazz drives people crazy more than punk/indie music does.
You never mentioned any jazz stuff Jaron, did you ever listen to any of it?,mention some stuff and I`ll talk about,it`ll be helpful to any one else here as well.

As far as rock of the 80’s and 90’s go… it all goes back to Velvet Underground. That’s good enough for me.

Jazz? I played alto and baritone saxiphone for 5 years. Little out of practice. Can’t say jazz is an equal to rock in my mind but I do enjoy some of the old school jazzers. Wynston Marsalis – trumpet king.

About the only "neat" jazz thing I have is a rare promotional copy of Spyrogyra’s first LP on vinyl. Excellent record. But as I said, I’m not as well versed in modern jazz.

You are`nt versed in jazz if you think Wynton Marsalis is trumpet king.
Spryo Gyro? I have one of their records,it`s down in the basement getting moldy like it deserves.
Sorry Jaron to diss stuff, you sound like you need some education in jazz;I`ll help you out if you want,I suggested 2 albums to Allison the other day;I`m pressed for time now but tommorow I`ll mention some stuff to check out.
