OriginalPosterLostParticipantSince this is a Dinosaur Jr. message board, I know everyone here has great taste in music ;), so I thought I’d ask this here.
I love the song "Afwul Bliss" from GBV’s Bee Thousand, and I know it’s from Tobin Sprout. I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice on which of Sprout’s solo-albums to start with, considering I’m looking for "Awful Bliss"-like stuff?

OriginalPosterLostParticipanttobin sprout is great, i’m going to see him in NYC on 10.27. if you like the B000 tune, i’m assuming you are into a more mellow tobin, so I would recommend the moonflower plastic (welcom to my wigwam) album, which is my favorite one. he’s got a new album coming out which is supposed to be pretty rockin (according to tobinsprout.com). the other one i have is carnival boy which is good too. I don’t have the circus people album.

OriginalPosterLostParticipantThanks, keith! I was indeed looking for the more mellow side, so I’m gonna check out the Moonflower Plastic album then.

OriginalPosterLostParticipantI’ve never heard of Tobin Sprout, but the fact that a few Dino fans like (him? them? her?)leads me to believe I better look into it. Is the music along the same vein as J’s stuff?
Anybody into Wilco, Uncle Tupelo or any other "Y’all-ternative"?

OriginalPosterLostParticipantTobin Sprout used to be in Guided by Voices, and I think his music sounds much like them. For the J connection: I guess that some of his stuff is kinda "Martin & Me"-like. Check out http://www.tobinsprout.com for some RealAudio files.
Wilco is great! I really like "Being There", and I’ve always thought that "The Lonely 1" would be a great description of J.
Are you into the Jayhawks? I have "Hollywood Town Hall" and "Tomorrow the green grass" and they’re very good.Jasper

OriginalPosterLostParticipantI really like what I’ve heard from the Jayhawks, but haven’t bought anything yet. Same with Son Volt. I have Being There, AM, and Summer Teeth from Wilco and No Depression and Anodyne from Uncle Tupelo. I’ll definitely get some Jayhawks and Son Volt very soon, but I really dig Jeff Tweedy more than any other of the Uncle Tupelo alumni. Check out Nineteen Wheels (from Detroit)sometime, too, they are pretty cool.

OriginalPosterLostParticipantif ya like Wilco, you have to pick up the Billy Bragg/Wilco Mermaid Avenue album!! it is the best!! they took a bunch of Woody Guthrie’s lyrics and wrote songs to them. it is an incredible album. Mermaid Ave II is good too, but I would pick up the first one if you are into Wilco or any of the No Depression type bands (y’alternative, thats great!).

OriginalPosterLostParticipantYeah, I have Mermaid Ave. I agree that it’s really good, excellent in fact. California Stars would make it worth buying even if everything else on it was no good! Don’t have II yet, but soon!

OriginalPosterLostParticipantsince i mentioned i was seeing Tobin, i’ll follow it up by saying it was an awesome show. he did tons of his GBV songs (Atom Eyes!!) and lots of solo material. the new Eyesinweasel stuff is awesome!! he played a really cool version of "Gas Daddy Gas" too. All in all it was a great show. Lots of enthusiastic (drunk!) fans that were really into it and screaming out requests. not the mellow show i was expecting. and he did do "awfull Bliss". the place went nuts for "its like soul man".

OriginalPosterLostParticipantThanks for the follow-up, Keith! I was supposed to have "Moonflower Plastic" by now, but Barnes & Noble send me the wrong cd in the right cover. By the way, does anyone know which album from the Matador label from ’96 would have a cover of Dylan’s "I threw it all away" on it? I’m wondering about which cd they send me…
