I just got a good look at the "Uma interview" for the first time (can’t thank you enough for maintaining this site, and putting up those videos, Jeremiah!), and damn it’s funny!
The whole thing is definitely a joke. One of the things J says (about Amherst) is: "A guy put himself on fire, and nobody even cared – because Uma is not around anymore."

"The chief problem about death, incidentally, is the fear that there may be no afterlife – a depressing thought, particularly for those who have bothered to shave. Also, there is the fear that there is an afterlife but no one will know where it’s being held."

yeah, from what i’ve heard, they went to the same high school, but they aren’t really the same age. maybe it just turned into an inside joke.

That whole scene (and others featuring Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth) is a spoof of "In Bed With Madonna".

The joke being that Kim is "desperate for some fun" and J comes out with a whole load of depressing stuff – I guess it’s a take-off of how he is perceived by the media as a real depressed guy.

Uhh… Now that you point out that it’s a joke I get it. I did not know what to make of that clip when I first saw it. I keep thinking I should get "the year that punk broke." It’s a very inexpensive video, like $8.00 (I think aroulnd $6.00 at the sonic Youth website.)

I went to high school with J. I don’t remember anyone one named Uma. It must be a joke. Uma Thurmon??!?!! People say she is a Dino Jr. Fan… I do remember getting the feeling that J was secretly snickering at people when they talked to him. He did not make too many jokes but I think it may have been because he thought everything was funny enough as it is.

I do remember the guy who lit himself on fire in the common. I recollect that was around the Gulf War and was some kind of protest. But I did not really care either… I think I might even have been in town that day… I remember talking about it with family and not being able to break the sense of disbelief.

But it’s a joke. Uhh… Amherst is a joke!! Nice to visit and buy stuff but I am glad I no longer live there….

And yes thanks for the clips!

Yeah, Uma is Uma Thurman. Did she go to the same high school as J or not? (Amherst-experts raise your voice…) I think the whole joke is mostly about J having a crush on Uma. First he says that nobody is smiling anymore since she left, and when Kim asks about him and Uma it’s "too painful" to talk about. Especially because J looks and sounds so tormented (if you took it seriously, you might think he is about to start crying), the whole scene is extremely funny.

"Ever since Uma left, things haven’t really been the same. Everyone has their head down, and no one’s smiling anymore. The other day, a guy lit himself on fire and no one even cared – because Uma wasn’t around anymore."

I would have followed him around school, too…probably would have been too shy to talk to him though

she went to the same high-school. In the press releases that came out with ‘Without A Sound’ it had a note that Uma used to follow J around school or something like that. I’ll bring the exact quote next time

So it’s not a Joke??? Uma Thurmon went to high school with me AND I DID NOT NOTICE!!! I don’t know… Anyone know how old she is? I kind of stuck to the dark corners of high school… Maybe I didn’t notice… I did not notice much anyway at that time… We did have Bill Cosbys daughter in that school. He lives about 30 miles north of amherst and she was shipped down in a lemo. I don’t know what she was doing there. The only girls that looked anything like UMA were the Kanava twins… But they had curly hair… Uma is sort of tall, voluptuous and has straight hair and a smoky complexsion, high cheek bones, ect. right? Maybe I have my super modals mixed up…

I don’t think any of you folks would have recognised J in high school. He had a VERY short hair cut.

J was born in 1965 so he would be about 4 years older than Uma so if it is true that they went to the same school I can see why J didn’t want anything to do with her (I can also imagine that she probably didn’t look good when she was young). However the info I got below says she went to a boarding school. so I bet they just made up a joke when they found out Uma was from Amherst.

from allmovie.com
An actress noted as much for her exotic, almost otherworldly beauty as she is for her considerable
talent, Uma Thurman is one of the most renowned actresses of her generation.

The daughter of celebrated professor of Buddhist Studies Robert F. A. Thurman and Nena von
Schlebrugge, a model and psychotherapist who was once married to Timothy Leary, Thurman was
born in Boston on April 29, 1970. Raised with three brothers in Amherst, where her father taught at
Amherst College, she enjoyed a fairly bohemian upbringing, one that was marked by visits from
Eastern holy men and Tibetan refugees. Encouraged to think for herself and to be independent,
Thurman, who had been interested in acting from an early age, left her Massachusetts boarding
school at the age of 15 to pursue an acting career. Moving to New York, she earned a living by
washing dishes and modeling, though the latter means of support never agreed with her.

Hey guy who went to school with J tell us all about it. Were you a fan from the beginning did you know something was going on with Deep Wound and stuff. Did you think Dino Jr would make it to where it did?

I didn’t go to schoool with J Mascis or Uma Thurmon.

My Humble guess is that it is what you humans would call a humor joke

Uma went to high school Northfield Mount Hermon, in Northfield, MA. 20 minutes from Amherst and a private school, unlike Amherst.
she did not finish from what i heard, she went into modeling.
she did go to elementary school in amherst, her dad taught at Amherst college…i had a boss who went to elementary school with her and apparently she is a snob…even then…

can you actually picture her with him? didn’t think so…
