humble joeParticipantHello again,
Erm… SST. Which bands on this label are worth checking out? I was thinking of checking some Minutemen. Yeah?
Are the Replacements on SST?
Any info welcome.

RobertParticipantYou should definetely get your hand on some Minutemen!! Other SST artists that I’ve heard and liked: Black Flag, Firehose. Their homepage didn’t say anything about The Replacements being on their label though…
On the bright side, they seem to have a lot of Dino on vinyl -not to mention that it’s dead cheap http://www.sstsuperstore.comAugust 31, 2001 at 10:27 am #65673
SGParticipantThe Replacements were never on SST,they started out on Twin Tone and then signed a major label-Sire.
Other SST bands worth checking out:Meat Puppets-Meat Puppets 2 and Up On The Sun are my favs.
Husker Du-Zen Arcade and New Day Rising are my favs(Beck is NOT better than Husker Du)
Minitemen-Double Nickels On The Dime is my fav.
Black Flag-Damaged And The First Four Years are my favs.Sorry on the Beck issue, just giving my opinion,we don`t force people here to listen to stuff or tell them what to like, but we do give opinions,if you like Beck, that`s cool with me,I do like some of his songs, just not totally sold on the guy.

SGParticipantThe Descendents-Milo Goes To College is regarded as their classic(There`s picture of J wearing their t shirt of that album cover)but I have a best of compilation called Somery which is good, and a live album called Liveage which is good also.

SGParticipantTony-Big Drill Car was on Cruz records so your right,it`s not there for some reason, maybe it`s deleted.
Bad Brains-I against I is cool, but my fav Bad Brains album is Black Dots, recorded in 79 it`s their live set cut in a studio in Virginia, you can hear crickets in the background, must have been close to outside. It was`nt released until 96,it`s friggin fast punk that will blow you away.
I forgot that the Meat Puppets catalog was reissued on Rycodisc, check those out,it has bonus tracks and a whole remastering job that is better than the SST issues.August 31, 2001 at 12:03 pm #65677
SGParticipantThat Bad Brains album I mentioned is on Caroline records, not SST.
I against I is on SST.September 1, 2001 at 8:08 am #65678
humble joeParticipantWhoa! Sorry guys, I was only asking if the Replacements were on SST, not saying they were! Sorry about the confusion…
Anyway, you’ve proved great as always. I think Double Nickels will be first…
So much stuff! But on a Replacements tip, are they similar to an SST band? Someone recommended ‘Tim’…
September 1, 2001 at 11:39 am #65679
SGParticipantThe Replacements are not similar to a SST band, they had their own unique sound, like a wilder REM is what I think of them but not as loud as other post punk bands, but rocking nonetheless.Tim is fantastic!check it out.

SGParticipantHey Kurticus7
Thought this would be helpful in learning about the history of punk/indie music in the 80`s,SST was the top indie label in the 80`s(before U2 sued them which put an end to them contuining to put out stuff, they release very little today).October 3, 2001 at 8:22 pm #65681
maxiniParticipant
quote:
Originally posted by kerb-dogma:
How does u2 sue a label that they are not even on?

U2’s label Island Records sued SST over the SST band Negativland plagiarizing ‘I still haven’t found what I’m looking for’ on a single from ’91. Read more about it here.
October 4, 2001 at 3:01 am #65682
bobParticipantSST had a t-shirt that said "kill Bono" too and another one that says "fuck sony"
October 4, 2001 at 5:36 am #65683
capohedzParticipantSST also got sued by Casey Kasem for a sample Negetiveland had of him flipping out
or something to that effect. From what ive heard is that SST went down because Greg Ginn kept fucking over all his bands…I know thats why Sonic Youth Signed
to Geffen…they were at a point where they
could either get dicked around by SST or get
dicked around by a major label but have good
distribution.October 4, 2001 at 12:07 pm #65684
SGParticipantThe Meat Puppets said that Ginn`s attitude towards other SST bands was no band should sell more then Black Flag.
Henry Rollins said in an interview that SST was screwed around by the owners of indie record stores not paying for their SST orders, and SST could`nt sue them because of a lack of money, they made hardly anything off the records they put out.October 4, 2001 at 1:48 pm #65685
humble joeParticipantI reckon J should chat to SST about putting out the first album. It would be fitting that the first three were all on the same label.
Go on J!
