I don’t know if there already has been a topic like this one, I couldn’t find it using the ‘search’ function…

den Buck asks:
1. What was the first album you bought?
2. On vinyl or cd?
3. What do you think of it today?
4. Do you still play it today?

den Buck answers for himself:
1. Lou Reed – Transformer
I heard some tracks on a late-night show on AFN, they were like nothing I’ve heard before, I rushed to my local record-store with that little money I had saved, and to my amazement, they even had it!!!!!
2. It was on vinyl of course, the cd-age was still a decade away….
3. I still think it’s a fine album, although it has some weak tracks on it.
4. No, I’ve got the excellent "Different Times: Lou Reed in the ’70s"-cd instead, and play that occasionally, I regularly play his album ‘Berlin’ (my original vinyl copy from 1973!), one of the saddest albums ever made……

I am not 100% sure, but I think my first "bought" album was the one from the Go-Go’s with "Our Lips are Sealed" (album title?) and "We Got The Beat". It was on vinyl. I still think those tow songs are cool, although I do not have the record today. What really caught me off guard was the connection to the Germs Belinda Carlisle had. Never would have tied The Go-Gos to punk.

The first album I ever owned was a ’45 of "Rock Me Amadeus" by Falco, but my mom bought it for me.

The first one I ever bought with my own money (I remember it clearly) was a tape of "Faith" by George Michael. (I’m young, okay?)

I can’t listen to Falco because I am lacking a functioning turntable at the moment. The George Michael tape, however, sounds great despite the fact that it is covered in dirt and lacking a case or insert

The first cd I bought, when I got the player as a gift, was Tori Amos’ "Little Earthquakes", which had just been released.

first album I ever got was Aerosmith – Pump on tape when I was in grade 4. I don’t think much of aerosmith today and I don’t listen to the tape because I spilled dr pepper on it the day after I bought it.

The next tape I got was tom petty – into the great wide open a couple of years later, it is pretty damn good

First album I bought was a cd (I just got a cd player). I bought it together with my brother and my sister advised (I mean: told) me to buy OMD – The Best Of.
Although it wasn’t completely my own choice, I like the album. I don’t play it a lot anymore, but I still like it.

Hey Rosa: Falco was great, Rock me Amadeus was good and Jeanny was even better!

hmmm, Queen, News Of The World (with w’e will rock you’, ‘we are the champions’ and so on) on vinyl.
My mum threw it away with many others in prevention of satanic influences that may come out of the records.
Well, I wouldn’t listen to that album anymore

Hey, you’re among friends here, dun worry about admitting that you miss it like crazy

Seriously, your mom thought Queen provided a satanic influence?! That’s hilarious, not that the thought hasn’t crossed my own mind when having to suffer through ‘We will rock you’ over and over at soccer and hockey games. Pure torture that is.

Well, this is an interesting situation for me. My father is a bluegrass musician, has been since well before I was born, so I was pretty much raised on my dad’s music. I wasn’t interested in most of the music during the 80’s and I never bought any tapes or anything.

The first tape I actually owned was a ‘New Kids on the Block’ tape that a friend of mine gave me as a joke on my 13th birthday. Needless to say, I quickly passed that on to my sister (hey, she was 11 at the time.. )

The first tape I actually bought was Nirvana, ‘Nevermind’, which I thought was cool as hell at the time. Way different that the glam crap that proceeded it. I don’t listen to it any more as Nirvana wore off pretty quickly after I discovered Dinosaur Jr, Pixies, etc.

As for my first CD (and rosa will be amused by this) it was Pearl Jam’s ‘VS’ which I got at the same time as I bought my first CD player (the department store I bought it at only carried the mainstream stuff, so no Dino and I had to have something to play on my new player. ) It’s been a long time since I listened to that one as well…
