It was a little hard to hear the beginning of last nights show on NPR….my kids were playing indoor frisbee and it kept getting louder and louder and then laughter turned into screaming when the littlest guy started to feel left out so I had to pick him up and get him involved in something else. The phone was ringing non stop and we were making peanut butter cookies so the oven timer was going off every 20 minutes or so…then we had visitors drop by….I had to apologize for disengaging from them to try and listen to the show.

but I did get to hear a good bit of Lou and it sounded fine…..even heard an interesting song or two (one that I would want to go back to and hear again) and I especially like that song from the new album….the one that has been played a bit…hold on let me go find the title…..One Machine and one long fight (the better title in my mind)

So I’m listening in and turning the "house" speakers up..driving everybody crazy…..my husband says "J sounds younger and like he blew his nose" "Juan, you know that’s not J, that’s Lou…you know that’s not J Mascis singing" "

"Hell…I really don’t know…. you were dancing around saying "Dinosaur Jr tonight, Dinosaur Jr tonight" that’s what I know..

but what I want to know is "What the hell happened? suddenly, at the end of his set I hear Lou apologizing and saying something about NPR destroying the tape…Did I miss something? I was thinking "OMG, he is having a "Cancer Episode" right in front of us all….I was also thinking…..OH, never mind what I was also thinking. Did I miss something…anyone else hear anything that would bring up such a "feeling"
I got a note this morning from an astrologer friend with this message:

Heavy things: Sun, Mars, and Venus are all nearing their own most intense degrees of Fall or Depression, Mercury-Saturn just conjoined on Venus’ maximum degree of Fall, and in sidereal will all be in their least favorite signs togeth…er soon. Try to observe depressing thoughts with detachment, and don’t take things too personally right now. On the plus side, it’s a good time to work hard and get things done. Expect that lots of people and situations will be edgy, though. Work out through prayer and meditation.

I woke up this morning with such a headache and I never have a headache, I could hardly open my eyes then I went out into the world and everyone this morning is feeling so "heavy" moving slow, the energy is intense, I’m very sensitive to it, I don’t know if anyone else is here. Everything is coming up to the surface right now…all the stuff we just processed when Mercury was Retro a few weeks ago. It’s all productive but a little scary. So my friend, who is also a Cancer male called me up this morning to apologize, and I was a little confused, he said he was sorry for being so angry lately and for being so intense, he said "I’m sorry, I’m sorry over and over"…I hadn’t even noticed he was being any different than he usually is. I told him Geez, you and Lou Barlow, WTF….Why are so so sorry, you have done nothing wrong that I notice.(and then he said Who is Lou Barlow and then I had to explain)..and then he blurted out to me "They bombed the Moon yesterday can’t you have a little sympathy for us Cancers." I had not remembered that NASA was going to bomb the moon, Oh, poor Cancers….they are so sensitive, so this probably was "felt" by them….if not felt then they may have swallowed it on a subconscious level. I think Lou’s music sounded good last night and I like his Cancer groove that he was getting on, some of the intricacies that are him can’t really be expressed fully in Dinosaur Jr. so I say "Yay for Lou"
OH then, I almost forgot, LOU berated the audience again just like he did in Athens. LOU….WHY?????
I’m not sure what that is all about but I guess it makes the audience (us) "feel" kind of bad as well.
I think bombing the moon was a bad idea. So I’ll just say I’m sorry too! :?

oddly enough, I talk to the wind is playing right now on auto shuffle…..cosmic giggle in order.
We finished with De La Soul and now player on auto shuffle.

I guess you didn’t hear Lou’s set from the other night? I’m still waiting for someone to tell me what I missed did something go terribly wrong in the middle and I missed it? Just wondering?

Moonchild sounds nicer than "Cancer" or "Crab" or "Moonbaby" to me….

Yeah I think I read that somewhere

I was a big Sebadoh fan back in the day plus I used to own a couple of his Sentridoh albums. So it`s not like I don`t like Lou`s songs.Just some artists I lose track of over the years,I was nuts about Will Oldham in the `90s but don`t follow him these days.

Yeah I think I read that somewhere  ….SG, you got the joke, it’s hard to know with computer type.

I never followed Lou’s music either but I have seen him play once before…..I just thought I would listen in the other night and that’s how this started. I’m still scratching my head over a few things but "ragging on the paying customers", suggesting that they are complacent, rubs me the wrong way. I’m almost 45 years old…I don’t want to move around a lot….I just want to listen to some music. I’m turning into my Mother, I don’t want to stay up until midnight to hear music, I don’t want drunk folks spilling their rum and cokes into my shoes. If I’m shucking out 25 or 30 bucks to see someone play music…I would rather hear "Thank You" than "Y’all suck" any day. You know I adore and am obsessed with J Mascis and he and the rest of his "act" are going to be in Atlanta in just a few days……..and I just don’t even care….if I had a therapist they would have to agree, I’ve made a lot of progress…I am sure. I would love to see "the guys" have a little more passion about what they are doing….the songs from Farm are sounding good and tight but I’m struggling to feel any sort of passion about playing music anymore when I listen to them. I saw some great music last night, we have an annual Blues party out in Ila, Ga. A lot of the old and some of the new blues guys get together, most of them play together or have played together in the past all over the South. Some of the guys brought their children and some of their children are now playing music…man these guys are still passionate about music. All night long, musicians rotated on and off the stage, they let the children come up and play with them on some songs. One little guy about 11 years old, came up to play drums and he said "I only know how to do this" and he played a little beat, but "I want to learn more"….and one of the old guys said "Hey, just do it, we will work with it baby….AND THEY DID…SO CUTE! Everybody was playing together….it was not perfect but it was passionate and fun and lively. So we were all "getting into it"
I still think the analogy of sex is perfect….when folks play music together it is an interesting combination of energies, it’s very sexual to me, there is flow….there is give and take…there is taking the time to listen and feel what direction things are going in…there is eye contact to compensate for a moment where one musician may have been sort of lost in their own thing and they are ready to look up and connect. When the musicians last night looked into the eyes of another musician they were looking at a "friend", a "brother" a fellow artist who had probably sacrificed a lot of a "normal" life for the life of an artist, of a musician. There were smiles…lots of smiling, lots of laughter when the music got "hot…or good"….there was laughter when things got "over the top". The music felt "good and alive"…Hello…this is when an audience gets into it…
I understand that when we get older we have to suddenly be passionate about paying the mortgage, passionate about keeping the utilities on, passionate about our children’s education, the responsibility of generating an income can suck the passion out of us…yada, yada…I understand that but at least….find the fun in it. There is a big difference between making love and just wishing it would hurry up and be over. There is a good porn reference I can make here, if your gonna do it well and making porn is your thing and it is your "paying thing", then you got to "really" (meaning for real) get into it or learn to "fake it" big time, because if your not into it…or at least not making a real effort to get into it, than a big bunch of those watching it aren’t gonna be into it either. I’m just saying. That’s exactly what I felt when I saw the band in Athens back in "I don’t remember" ….December? I was listening to the music…and I’m the biggest fan so you know I’m going to like it….and I just got the feeling…."Wow, these guys aren’t real friends, I don’t even think they have any sort of appreciation of each other"…….and that made me feel sad. That’s not to say that folks who feel that way about each other can’t make good music together…it’s all about where you put your passion or intentions…..I don’t know where the passion (or intention) of the band Dinosaur JR is right now …..but I do know when I try and look at it, to find it….I have to turn my head…..it’s just too awkward for me to look at for long.

Uhh, I had to edit…I read over it again…and I think I am 45…not almost….I had to like go into my mind and put up my left hand and count…you know, starting at my thumb, 64,74,84,94…oh, um, I forgot that I had a birthday. My kids are correct, I’m starting to have little blank spots in my thinking, they have noticed it, I say "oven" for "fridge," walk into a room and can’t remember why….Oh, God, help me….if I live to be 70 something….

The blues party sounds interesting.Georgia has a long history of the music for sure.I used to live by a blues musician,an amazing harmonica player.I did`nt get to know him but my friend did,I made a mix tape up for him once.He died a few years ago.He played with Bo Diddley once. His regular boss was a guy called Dutch Mason who was famous in Canada in the blues, funny guy.Kinda had a Foghorn Leghorn vocal style.BB King asked him to come to Chicago and he`s make him famous in the States but he refused. He wanted to stay here and just gig in the local bars.

I found an interesting review of the show here: http://www.avclub.com/dc/articles/dinosaur-jr-at-930-club,33899/”>http://www.avclub.com/dc/articles/dinos … lub,33899/

it has little tid-bits like: Beyond didn’t play like desperate cash-grab or retread; rather it ranked amongst the band’s best. (It shouldn’t have been surprising, then, that its follow-up, the recently released Farm, is just as good—if not better—than its predecessor.

I would have to say…I agree.

the tempo changes were like sharp turns with no one at the wheel,
again…I agree…..there are still some tempo issues…I think…I’m trying to put my finger on where that is coming from….my new idea is…Murph has either had way too much coffee…is on crystal meth or he has a new work philosophy and that is "if I can just play all these songs really, really fast….then it will all be over and I can go out and get "crunk" and perhaps with some luck get laid." I’m just thinking…I’m not sure.

After sporadically mimicking the unintelligible gibberish and requests hurled by the crowd, he remarked, “I always forget how still D.C. audiences are." Bad move, dude: If the resulting blitz of Sebadoh insults within earshot was any indication, D.C. crowds don’t like being told that it’s their job to stroke the egos of those on stage by jumping around like idiots during the performance.

I would have to say,Umm, I’m doing a little whistle right now, while looking straight up into the ceiling.

Yes, SG, the Blues night was cool, I shot video and unfortunately some of the teen’s got to my camera and decided I filled up the memory card with a bunch of bull….and they needed that space to shoot videos of themselves, uh, playing with food and opening up glow sticks with the fire of a candle and pouring the glowing goop all over the out door furniture. I told them all, I am so not letting them near the camera again or talking to them for two days….
so instead of the "boring music" as the kids called it…I now have …hundreds (I’m not kidding) of shots like this:

I wanted to clarify, that I know certain songs have tempo changes ie: what’s the name of that song..oh,yeah, Feel the Pain and Plans and others..I understand that….but …not Kentucky Derby style tempo changes…I didn’t want anyone to ever get the idea that I didn’t understand what I was talking about. I know, Good Luck with that around here…..

This thread makes me feel better in the sense that I am kind of burned out on Dinosaur at the moment. They are playing Seattle next month and I don’t even care. I’ve seen them once already this year and when I did it just felt a little stale to me. They even played some new songs and it sounded kind of stale. I’ve seen them so many times since the reunion tour, that I know when they play a bad show, I hear mistakes when they play (probably mistakes that a non fanatical fan would miss) and I don’t like to notice those things. Instead of enjoying the shows I almost get a little critical, like I’m grading them or something. Maybe because I’ve seen/heard these songs many times before, I don’t know…….

Don’t get me wrong I and know you guys won’t, I am a huge J Mascis/Dinosaur Jr fan ,I just think I’ve been so full bore on them for so long that maybe its catching up with me. You know, time for something new?

I just feel better that I’m not the only one that feels this way. So thanks Stefka you always know how to make me feel better. :)

I`m not a gig goer so I judge a band on their records.Farm is great so that`s cool.If their live show is lacking,it`s only half of the story.

You’re right SG Farm is a great album, and I love listening to Dinosaur Jr records, but their shows for me are pretty predictable now which is sad being that they’ve put out so much great music over the years. You’d think they’d mix it up some more.

Lou and J grew up on the hardcore scene (as did I), so ridiculous tempo changes and occasional "fuck you" attitudes to their audiences are in their blood. I totally get it. They’re certainly not hippies.
