SGParticipantEver hear music being played that does`nt fit the situation?such as:
-Santa Claus was at the mall Saturday, christmas music was playing right?wrong!instead was James Brown`s I Feel Good.I like JB but what happened to Jingle Bells?
-I saw a fashion show on tv once, they were playing in the background My Bloody Valentine`s Only Shallow,as much as I like MBV,it does`nt fit a fashion show.
-near me there`s a large bookstore with a Starbucks on the right side of the store, about 2 weeks ago they were playing Miles Davis`s In A Silent Way/It`s About That Time,it`s a late 60`s trippy jazz tune, does`nt suit a coffee shop.
-Last year at christmas in the grocery store near me I walked in and they were playing Mike Oldfield`s Tubular Bells, which was used in The Excorcist, when does that qualify as holiday music?anyone have anything to add?

AGAPParticipantHey SG,
Cool topic, with you on the James Brown thing…altho maybe Santa was ready to rip some kids head off if he heard jingle bells one more time, could be his way of cooling off listening to a song about feeling good I would love to hear the Ramones christmas song walking thru the mall spending all my cash…dreaming I know
Heard a JAMC song being used at a fashion show once…geez if anyone is antifashion its JAMC. Sure I saw Sonic Youth playing at a fashion show on tv once…can’t remember the song or show though.
Allison…going to the mall later will probably have loads to add

rosaParticipantGood stories Salamiguy.
You reminded me of this interview with Diamanda Galas that came out a few years ago.

quote:
Goblin: Well we hope you get through the Christmas season okay, everyone seems so depressed this time of year.
Galás: Well they should be, if you have to go to a drug store and listen to some fucking soul singer singing jingle bells it’s enough to make you want to blow your head off. It’s very, very vile. I said that to the clerk today at the drugstore and she looked at me in horror. "I’m shopping at your store, I’m a customer, please turn those jingle bells down. I find it hurtful and offensive." She told me I should thank God for my good fortune.

One of my favorite "doesn’t fit" occasions was about a year ago (I think I mentioned this in another thread, but it’s amusing enough to repeat). My first NBA game; the Golden State Warriors vs the Lakers, and the Warriors cheerleaders did a routine to "The Beautiful People" by Marilyn Manson. I didn’t quite get the basketball tie-in, but it was definitely entertaining.

SGParticipantWhen I went to the mall this morning, they were playing Bing Crosby`s White Christmas so I don`t know what they did with JB.
Malcom-I know what you mean by the newagey holiday stuff,I heard that played before around here.
Thanks for the Diamanda story Rosa. -
