OriginalPosterLostParticipantThis is a touchy subject but some one had to start it sooner or later.
There are only 2 songs that I actually don’t like.
1. Don’t – I think this song is pretty cool but it kills bug from being a perfect album I hate listening to 8 gorgeous songs and then having to run and stop the cd when this comes on. You can listen to this only about a tenth as often as you can listen to the other songs on the album2. Mountain Man – Obviously the band is having fun here but I guess I would rather not have it in the context of a Dino album.
I like all the other dinosaur jr songs but I’m gonna choose some that personally don’t do it for me.
Poledo – This song is pretty good, and I don’t hate Lou I think Sebadoh and Folk Implosion have some great stuff but after the first 7 songs anything would sound bad. The ukelele is cool.
Lose – see above. This one is kind of just tossed out while the first 7 are masterpieces. Apparently this is all the riffs Lou wrote put together. Actually I like this one quite a bit it just doesn’t measure up to the other songs on the album.
Start Choppin’ – Ironically this was their biggest song. I think it’s just the falsetto goodBYE that I can’t get in to (it kind of makes me cringe). I love the intro and the solo has a great melody. The song doesn’t seem to have direction at times and it just fades out.
Sideways – just a little boring and I’m not used to J being boring. It’s a great riff though and there are a lot of cool sounds on it.
Alone – I’m all about J’s solos but I like it when he plays more melodicly and this one is kind of dark. The high lyrics are too hard to get a hold on so this song sound like an instrumental to me and a song that just repeats one word over and over is boring to me. It seems like too long of a song to be put right in the middle of an album. I know all of these things I am complaning about are what was intended for the song and it definetly sets a mood.
All these songs are just the ones I sometimes skip when I’m listening to the albums (I don’t skip start choppin’ though and I stop Bug and YLAOM after #8 and #7 respectively. I still think YLAOM is the greatest album ever) These songs just don’t compel me to listen to them as much as the rest of the songs on the album.
I apologize for my babbling, redundancy, and poor grammer.
* sappy, I edited this to tell you why I don’t like songs[This message has been edited by bob (edited November 19, 2000).]

OriginalPosterLostParticipanti was going to start this thread, but never got round to it, so thanks bob.
i think people should give reasons as to why they do not like any particular songs.
i don’t think i dislike any full song by J, although there is the opening to ‘can’t we move this?’ which sounds a bit too ‘classic rock’ for my liking (although the rest of the song is good. When songs start with a big wailing solo it always seems to sound too cheesy, Pearl Jam did it once…
i think i can guess why u don’t like ‘lose’ or ‘poledo’, poor lou.
i can’t understand why you dislike ‘alone’ though, i feel it’s really heartfelt and the soloing is amazing. anyway, i’ll shut up now…

OriginalPosterLostParticipantI too, don’t understand why you dislike ‘Alone. ‘Alone’ is my favourite song, because of what you just described. The beauty of the song is fact that he just repeats one word over and over again. I feel (which is my opinion, if you would ask J he’d probably say, he’s just playing guitar…), that the word ‘Alone’is all he can say with words, and that the guitarsolo all the emotion and feel that comes along with being alone and having just broken up with a girl.
Anyway, I can’t think of a song I don’t like right now. I’d say Mountain Man, too, i guess.

OriginalPosterLostParticipantI can’t really come up with any songs I dislike. Not at the moment anyway. Been listening to all the albums and imports I’ve got to find one. But I’ve been totally overwhelmed and can’t decide yet. But there’s one song, Grab it from Without a Sound. It’s not that it’s a bad song, ‘cuz I think it’s really good. It’s just that I don’t think it really fits on the album. It doesn’t really blend in with the other songs. I guess this could be a good thing for some, but doesn’t quite work for me. So I’ll just listen to it once in a while, without listening to the rest of the album. This may be strange, but it’s my humble opinion anyway.

OriginalPosterLostParticipant‘Grab it’ is one of my favoriet songs I think it was put there so the album has a real fast loud song so I know what you mean by it not fitting with the album though I think it’s there to take you out of the hyptonic state brought on by the gorgeous ‘outta hand’. I like how it starts like it’s half way into the solo really breaks the mood of the last song. I like the pounding drums too.
If you have to look through the albums for a song you don’t like then obviously you like them all.
I didn’t mean to ask for bad songs because there aren’t really any just one’s you aren’t compelled to listen to as much.

OriginalPosterLostParticipantYea, I’ve reallly had to work to find some songs. But it has been great. Lately, I’ve been listening to Pavement, Yo La Tengo, Mogwai, BTS and Weezer a lot more than Dino. This topic let me "rediscover" the sweet thrill of Dino! And I’ve loved it. Been almost a year since I heard through the whole Bug album. Now it totally blew my mind. Well I’ve found the song I listen to the least. This isn’t because I don’t like it. It’s because it reminds me of an ex-girlfriend of mine. Although we broke up years ago, and we’re really close now. I get kinda sad and bothered listening to it. It’s "Not The Same" from Where You Been. Can’t come up with a good explanation for why I’m feeling like this, could be ’cause she was my first "real" girlfriend. Anyway, there you go Bob. And thanks again for posting this topic.

OriginalPosterLostParticipantI actually never really liked the first album except for Leper and Bulbs of Passion. After that the only songs I really don’t like are Pebbles + Weeds and The Little Baby.

OriginalPosterLostParticipantHey,
My pick has to be poledo…shocks me every time….pretty bad. Don’t on bug also is a problem, not a bad average thou 2 songs out of all those tunes. I am surprised people don’t like Alone, it is amazing and I agree the guitar does all the talking in that one. More Light is great, different than most on the disc but I listen to that one a lot really really loud, try it it works.

OriginalPosterLostParticipantOn the More Light album there are two songs I don’t really like: More Light and I’m not fine. I always skip those two songs. I must say, there are some more songs I don’t listen to very often (especially on Hand it over), but I think I like over 80% of J’s/Dinosaur Jr’s songs. The first time I heard "Water" I thought: Oh my god, this is terrible. But on a sunny afternoon playing Commander Keen I thought: I will listen to the complete song, just to hear it once. After that I played it seven times in a row and it got better each time! I think that’s also the case with other, less good songs: if you listen to it the first time, it’s no so good, but not really bad either. After listening to it a couple of times it’s getting better and better. I hope that will be the case with More Light and I’m not fine.

same here, i skip Poledo every single time i listen to YLAOM. it doesn’t fit at all and i’m usually not in the mood to hear it when i’m rocking out to YLAOM. if i wanna hear Lou’s 4track stuff (which is cool), i’ll put on Sebadoh III, not YLAOM.
i’ll get a little wild here, i skip over "How’d you pin that one on me" every time i listen to Green Mind. for some reason, the sound of this song just rubs me the wrong way. i love the entire album except for that one song. sorry J.

OriginalPosterLostParticipantI know what you mean ‘how’d you pin that one on me is kinda a throwaway’ but I love it anyway.

OriginalPosterLostParticipantHey,
I love that song as well, kinda chaotic but I think thats one of the things I like most about it. The guitar is right over the top….wow. The drumming is exhausting to listen to but together works just right for me. Some killer lines as well "how’d you pin that one on me haven’t even done it yet how’d you nab me….wrap my leg around the table I’ll make the trip when I’m more stable" just to point out a few. Actually Green Mind is currently in my top 3, hard to believe people pass this one up. I think I have to go buy another copy….mine is all messed up computer wouldn’t even play it tonite.
Of course More Light is top right now, I agree with someone above who said you just need to listen to the song a few times and it will hook you!!!!
Allison
ps as its American Thanksgiving soon you should check out William S Burroughs A Thanksgiving Prayer on napster…hilariously cynical but powerful and cool at the same time…what a voice!!

OriginalPosterLostParticipantI had to rebuy Green Mind because I got it used and scratched and also YLAOM because I got a scratch on there somehow. My more light comes in the mail tommorow. Woo-hoo only one month after release.
