OriginalPosterLostParticipantI wrote this for my Literature class, and I thought some of you might like to read it. I had to come up with something like the diary part, because the thing had to be "creative" in some way…
While thinking about the lyrics of Where you been – Dinosaur Jr.’s masterpiece from 1993 – for this assignment, it struck me again how much the record is a unity. All the songs deal with the broken pieces of a failed relationship. And how fitting it is therefore that the lyrics that J Mascis wrote for the album at first seem to be random pieces of everyday language, picked out of conversations, letters or a diary. But after hearing the album a few times more, it becomes clear that every song is a highly personal message, devoted to just one ‘you’ – but now on a record for all of us to hear. Some people might even find it embarrassing to hear; like one would be embarrassed to read a love letter intended for someone else. For instance, when J sings: “Has it been a different feel for you / the whole time this was going on / or is it something new?â€

OriginalPosterLostParticipanthey Jasper, this probably isn’t the best time to reply to what you wrote I have had maybe a few too many glasses of whiskey and my typing skills have something to be desired. Still, as a recommendation from Bates, I read what you had to say and felt an extremely strong need to give some sort of reply. In fact I am shocked that this particular post didn’t recieve any replies before. I work as a freelance writer and I see nothing as valuable as the sincere, pure, unencumbered emotion of someone who has something to say. Obviously when you wrote what you did, you had somethig to say. Unfortunetly my mind is too numb right now to respond to it in any intelligent way, still it is important that you know how intelligent, and how extremely real and urgent your original post was.
hey reply to this if your still around, I have to tell you how much I blew it.

OriginalPosterLostParticipantI’m still here. And I’m glad to hear you liked my post. Just go easy on the whiskey…

OriginalPosterLostParticipantHey Jasper tell me about the M. that you had to call. I had an M. that I use to have to call. It is only quite recently that I have been able to get through somewhat large periods of time with out thinking of my Maureen. Its funny how we sometimes crave things we know really aren’t good for us. I’ve moved on to what should be good for me, and found that I am very luck to have J mascis to help me through. That may or may not make sense, I’m still into the whiskey.

OriginalPosterLostParticipantHey Spider, there was no ‘M.’ The diary fragment, as I wrote in the assignment, was fictional. I made something up to fit the lyrics of ‘Drawerings’.

humble joeParticipantSo Jasper, you like Where You Been huh? ha ha…
I wasn’t dissing it, I just wanted some other peoples opinions and you have made me think twice about the album.September 6, 2001 at 7:54 pm #56656
K7 Rides AgainParticipanthey jasper! whole heartedly agree with all you are saying. WYB is my fav dino album. It was the first one i ever owned and as you mentioned, the more and more I listened the more and more I was hooked. totally understand what you mean by saying J’s guitar expresses all that he can’t verbally. hit the nail on the head with that one! another excellent example of this is the song DON’T (why!!!!!!! don’t you like me) tons of screaming and the guitar just wanes on and on and on in total misery (masterpiece!). J is such a cure for the depression and sometimes takes me back into it (memories). I guess that’s why I love dino so much…because out of all the other bands out there, J is the one who somes up life, relationships, and reality the best for me personally. hit my "lung lyrics thread" and tell me what THE LUNG means to you! great post, loved the read
