OriginalPosterLostParticipantAs I stepped out of my house and into my friend’s car to go to the show, there was a thick blanket of fog all aound. I know this is cheesy and ironic, but it was true and it truly set the tone for a good evening.
My friend and I drove the hour down to San Francisco to see this show at Slim’s, which is a really kool all ages night club…and it is also where I saw Dino play the last time they toured. I wanted to get to the show as fast as I can…although I had to stop at a burger king along the way to releave myself. The restroom said out of order, but I didn’t want to waste any more time so I just pissed in the back.
We got to Slim’s at 8pm, the exact time tha the show was gonna start. We parked nearby and made our way to the club. J was at the door all bundled up since it was fucking freezing outside, he was talking to some guy. As I entered the place I could see a lot of the people who were at the in-store show yesterday.
Beachwood Sparks was the opening band. On a Monday night I really needed to be woken up, and these guys were not the musical cup of coffee that I needed. They were really slow and played a kind of twangy country rock that has been done a thousand times before. Well, they are obviously ok since they have an album out on Sub Pop. THey did however play a good rendition of ‘Wake Up Little Susie’ by the Everly Brothers.
Finally, the moment I have waited for…J, Mike and George take the stage. Mike brought his bike up on stage with him and leans it up against his Marshall stack. He makes it a habit of ringing his bike bell between each song which is rather funny.
The start off with ‘Same Day’…surprise, surprise (please note the sarcasm). J states as usual, "That was the first song off the new record."
J and The Boys were not as loud as i remmebered Dino being, but then again, maybe I’m just a little more def. Mike’s bass playing really adds to the feel of the songs, although he messed up n a few songs, which he pologized for afterwards…but who can be mad at MIke Watt? He’s awesome!
The set list went as follows:
Same Day (Mike sang awesome back ups)
The Lung
Thumb
Where’d You Go
Waistin’
Raisins
I’m Not Fine
All The Girls
Blowin’ It/I Live For That Look
Ammaring
Back Before You Go
The Wagon
Just Like Heaven(With mike singing the ‘You!)
Not Right (Mike Singing Lead)
<encore>
More Light
Little Fury Things
FreaksceneOverall, a really good show. The crowd kinda sucked. They were just standing there and nodding there heads. I was going there expecting to rock out and jump around, but no. I guess too many indie snobs were in attendence. I thouhg that most of them would be at the Elliot Smith show across town. hehe.
One of my highlights of the show was the fact tha Lynn and Jone from Imperial Teen, who opened for Dino last tour, stood next to me through most of the show and I got to talk to them and get there signatures. That was really kool and made it an awesome night…to be surrounded by two of my favorite bands.
The show was over at 11:20. My friend who was sick was ready to go home, I felt bad the whole night cause she wasn’t feeling good…but she knew how much J means to me…so she stuck around. We drove home…both of our ears ringing. It was funny cause when either one of us talked, it just sounded like the adults on Charlie Brown.
We got home about 12:10 and both chowed down on some big bowls of Cheerios. It was a killer evening. I now sit in excitement and wait for tomorrow night when I get to see it all again. I also can’t wait to see the amazing Caustic Resin from Idaho open the show. Now, I must sit and wait for tonight. I hope that some of you will be able to make tonights show…it’s gonna rock.
