Has any member of this forum heard both the original SST/Homestead versions and Merge re-issue(s) of any of Dinosaur Jr.’s first three CD’s? I currently own the three original versions on CD and was curious to know whether any of the re-mastered versions (particularly ‘You’re Living All Over Me) are noticeably better in sound quality as to justify my buying them.

    Thanks,
    Jamie

I heard that on the original pressings of YLAOM the feedback doesn’t combine Kracked and Sludgefeast, it stops after Kracked and does the feedback thing. But on the remastered ones I know it does.

Yeah, that’s the only thing I noticed that’s totally missing (or maybe turned down really far) from the older version of YLAOM and included in the reissues. Other than that, it’s just the general sound quality improvement that makes them good. ‘Dinosaur’ is improved a lot I think but I don’t think you need the reissues if you already have the originals. They’re just nice to have.

I have both, definitely think you should pick up the reissues, the clarity of the sound on the reissues is reason enough. The sound on my YLAOM & Dinosaur originals is totally muddy, Bug had been killed thru years of abuse.

The videos & liner notes are pretty pleasing as well…

Plus the liner notes and photos are cool.

I agree with this: "Years later, the thing that stands out about these three albums – and Bug most of all – is that Mascis’s lead guitar playing is fucking violent and awesome and thank God they remastered this stuff because you can finally play the records as cripplingly loud as they were meant to be played."

I don’t like the way he talks about J’s later work with Dinosaur Jr. though, Where You Been and Green Mind are brilliant albums and Without a Sound and Hand it Over ain’t bad either.

Yeah. That guy’s an idiot. Seems like he only likes music that’s "underground", regardless of the music’s merit. I bet if the DINO albums had been released in reverse order, he’d be championing the SST release of HAND IT OVER and shitting all over Warner’s YOU’RE LIVING ALL OVER ME.

yah the only big notice for me on YLAOM is they dont have "show me the way" on the reissue *its not the best cover by anymeans* but instead have "just like heaven" which i would have like to seen them both on the reissue but they have the videos on there so its a fair trade

not to be a nitpicker :) and as a HUGE record(vinyl) buyer and collector, "kinda vinyl like" kinda doesnt work for me. to me records and cds are like apples and oranges…they both are fruits-the comparison ends there…
records sound so much better to me-but hey, thats me :)

its basically the same fucking thing… you can get all technical about it.. and yes they sound better.. but shit cant they throw on some demo’s and alternate versions and shit… or how bout just the bandmembers talking about the songs… geez… these are some of my favorite albums of all time couldnt they have put more into them>>? or are they saving that for a box set?

in my opinion, the reissues are a waste of money. they sound the same to me, and the origionals aren’t THAT hard to find. The only reissue i bought was the self-titled one because the sound on my vinyl version is kinda wack, but the reissue sound is even more wack. I guess I’m used to the reissues from the melvins and the meat puppets, where there are like 15 extra tracks and better sound (not to mention awsome liner notes written by the artists themselves, not just a bunch of other people kissing their asses). Dinosaur is still the best rock band ever though. i just don’t like these reissues.
