stroking_my_keeblinParticipantHey,
I Read somewhere that the reason why J doesn’t use his high pitched voice in any songs on "Without A Sound" is because he caught pnemonia while in Canada snow mobiling with Neil Young right before he was supposed to lay the tracks down.

buckingham rabbitParticipanthmm, maybe that’s why the album sucks!

AGAPParticipantHey,
Your right about the pneumonia thing…

D SylvesterParticipantIn addition, I seem to recall an interview where J mentioned that he wrote most of the songs for WaS on acoustic guitar while he was laid up and recuperating. I think he said something about that being one of the reasons several of the songs are in the same key, but I’m less certain about this point.
People tend to bash the album (**cough**buckinghamrabbit**cough)
but I always thought it had some great stuff. I mean, how can you not love the cool, just-lay-back-and-float-with-it mellowness of Outta Hand? Anyway, my two cents.

buckingham rabbitParticipantlet’s remember that ‘sucks’ is a relative term. i think this is definitely the worst dinosaur jr album, but that doesn’t mean it is completely devoid of any good songs. it also doesn’t mean that i think it sucks more than say…anything by matchbox 20 or third eye blind. over the years, ‘without a sound’ just hasn’t compelled me to listen to it as much as the other albums.
December 20, 2001 at 1:44 pm #52845
ammaringnycParticipantnot compelled!
how can anyone not be compelled by ‘don’t think so’? and i’ve got a real soft spot for ‘over yr shoulder’ – the real fuzzy intro with the drums kicking in has me air drumming every time….December 20, 2001 at 1:50 pm #52846
MattmanParticipantThe album that brought us ‘On the Brink’ and ‘Over Your Shoulder’ (just to name a few)? "Suck" may be a bit strong, but to each their own, I guess…
Actually, a long time ago, I used to think along similar lines as you do, that WaS was the lesser Dino album (never used the word "suck" though. ) However, as time moved on, it has grown to become one of my favorite…
I think that it just takes a little longer to sink in than some of the other albums. When was the last time you gave it a listen..?
December 20, 2001 at 1:54 pm #52847
ammaringnycParticipantfavorite might be pushing it, admittedly.
but over yr shoulder cannot be denied! awesome drumming scenes… just talking makes me wana head home and stoke the amp up!
touche – ‘on the brink’ too

MattmanParticipantWell, I should clarify… I meant to put an ‘s’ on the end of ‘favorite’ in that last post. Should be ‘favorites’. Still, I don’t listen to WaS as much as some of the other albums, but there are certain times when WaS is the only album that will do…
Every time I listen to it, I come off thinking… "This is such a great album, I should listen to it a lot more often…"

AGAPParticipantHey BR,
Glad to see you like some songs off WaS, definitely some great ones on there….that sucks thing kinda made me think otherwise
I don’t know much about golf but seems like J has a pretty good game. Mini Golfing I got pretty good at, had a course on the grounds of the place where I went to school/lived…strange game thou

buckingham rabbitParticipantyes, allison, i think j is supposed to be pretty good at golf. as much as i don’t care for the song ‘feel the pain’, the video for it was pretty cool. i remember when it came out mtv made it a ‘buzz clip’ and that pissed me off, but i guess nothing much came of it anyway. i just didn’t want jerk off kids listening to MY band. as i have mentioned in the past, my fervor for dinosaur has definitely dissipated since then (when i was in high school), but it is not gone! in fact, finding this bbs helped bring me back to those albums. nothing like a playing of ‘youre living all over me’ to cure depression.

AGAPParticipantHey BR,
I love that video for Feel The Pain, especially when they take the golf clubs to a couple guys…too funny
Glad to hear your getting reintroduced to some cool Mascis tunes. One of the great things about this site for me as well is the reminders/prompts to check out stuff I filed away…very cool. Yeah Right is my current fav off WaS but Over your Shoulder is coming close!!!
Saw a great bit on Mascis & The Fog on much music ages ago, Watt said florida was the home of some of the greatest american bands…Matchbox 20 & Creed. J did the funniest hi pitched laugh, Watt, George and J were a wicked team. Hope you have given More Light another try, would be worth your time…no doubt about it
Allison…no work for eight days….too cool

IMMMainecoffKoonParticipantAbout Without A Sound "Sucking". Personally the Dinosaur album I never go near is Where You Been. Without A Sound has a couple of duds on it but it’s better than Where you Been. Posssibly I only like Out There and Goin’ Home on that record. Before that I’d like every Dinosaur record apart from the snare sound on Thumb from Green Mind always got on my nerves.
August 13, 2006 at 5:24 am #52854
maxiniParticipantI love the snare drum on Thumb!
As for J’s falsetto voice on Where You Been – can’t say I missed it much on Without A Sound. Although Where You Been still totally rocks my socks, I much prefer when he is overdubbing his own voice in two different pitches, like the normal voice + falsetto overdubbing in songs like Water and Muck.
Without a Sound has some non-sucky songs indeed
