J.MASCIS & THE FOG – Free So Free

‘Someone said my freedom’s gone’: 9-11 is J blijkbaar niet in zijn slordige kleren gaan zitten. Freakscene, herenigt u!

Here it is, dB’s translation, with some added remarks (in []) by den Buck:

J.MASCIS & THE FOG – Free So Free

One wonders about whom J. Mascis is singing ‘Set us free’ on his new album with the Fog ‘Free So Free’. Does that Freakscene that once adored the frontman of Dinosaur Jr. still exist? [den Buck has heard rumours that there is such a thing as a FS ] One may hope so [a quite literal translation in which a bad dutch pun involving the letter J. gets lost – dB ], because "FsF" is an excellent, moving blast of a record from the slack ‘heir to the throne’ of guitar-rock specializing in laconic vocals and full-on distorted Crazy Horse-like rock. There is nothing really new on offer on this album, but my God, that introvert Dino is good! The electric solo is probably the best guitar-part we will hear this year, there is nobody else who can play a solo as moving as this. ‘FsF’ also includes some straight hard rocksongs, with some plain and direct lyrics, sung by J. in his usual slack way, with his guitar cutting like a knife through butter [that doesn’t make too much noise – dB ]. The ‘freedom’ theme plays a major part in almost every song, ‘Someone said my freedom’s gone’, it seems that 9-11 has made a big impression on J. That gives record an extra sharp therapeutic edge. [it seems we have a second ‘the Rising’ here, dB thought that ‘freedom’ thing had something to do with skydiving… ]. Freakscene [re]unite!
