Who would you prefer on the drums?

J? Murph? George? I would have to say Murph, I prefer his simpler style w/ J’s guitar.

    What does everybody else think?

    Hi,

I would definitely have J on drums versus anyone else. He is an amazing drummer, Murph 2nd , george 3rd.

J is a great drummer, anyone who’ve heard Deep Wound knows that. As for Murph and George, they both have great style, and it’s almost unfair to rate them up against J. After all there can be only one.

J is the best just listen to Puke and Cry or Can I Take This On, those off-beat rolls or whatever. wow! Murph is great but not as much style as J and besides J would write the parts for Murph anyway. I’m not sure about George because he only plays on 1 song but I know he’s great. Mind you I’m no expert on drums (but I know what I like)

I agree with you guys completely, J is *BY FAR* the most talented drummer of the three. I just think his drumming can sometimes overwhelm the songs, if that makes any sense…. thats why i prefer murph.

J is a great drummer technically but he is too cagey. A drummer has to be all out. otherwise you might as well have a drumm machine.

You ever hear about how Ringo Starr always says he is the greatest Rock and Roll drummer. It’s because he has style. Pat has style. He is not holding back. His personality comes across, even if J is proscribing every beat he plays.

J has great stage presence. That’s why at Dinosaur concert everybody would crowd right up in front of the stage. So why woud you want to stick him behind a drum kit?

I agree the only place for J in a live show is up front with a guitar. I prefer J’s drumming on any recording he has done, tons of style and really pounds the drums!!! What more could you ask for

I am starting to think you guys are right.

J should play drums and sing. Many guitarists would give anything to take J’s place on guitar. I don’t think that J is going to be happy with any drummer now because he has decided how all the drum parts for all his songs should sound already. And all the music critics would be baffled! Maybe even DEEPLY disturbed. Some fans would end up in insane asylums. Maybe this is not such a good idea after all…

But I have to say that after thinking about it I was full of it when I said J’s personality does not project in his drumming. Actually nobody sounds like he does. Especially the way he rushes sometimes at the beginning of a drum fill. That is sort of like Deep Wound except they just sped up and slowed down a lot.

It’s hard to compare the three because they’re all playing stuff J wrote. Like Charles Bukowski said, "The best interpreter of a dream is the dreamer." They are all good drummers but I would have to hear them each play unique material to compare their skills. But if you’re asking who should play drums for J’s music the answer is only J. Anyone can play a cover!

What’s up monkey! I guess I biased because we have had this disscussion before but I have to agree with Murph. While J has put together most of the beats you have to look at what the two have done together. Classic albums. Who can forget listening to J Lou Murph in the big D.
