Randy JaneParticipantwell, my amp fizzled, then it took the volume and cranked it, then normalized, then repeated several times. So, I need a new head maybe? That one was a really cool ’78 Peavey Mark 3 Musician head. Though it was loud, it didnt have the greatest distortion sounds. I need something very effective, and seeing as I have no job right now……very very cheap. Help me please, rj

Randy JaneParticipantoh yeah, i was looking at the Mosfet Marshall heads and Fender M80s..both around $150-$200. Christmas is close you know!

malcomParticipantI just read something about Gibson Lab series amps going for around $300-400 for a 100 watt 4X10 combo’s, they’re clean solid-state amps, but they dependable as hell, and BB King uses them. Some fender twins go for $700-800, although they’re clean unless you crank them to their full brain melting 100 watt capacity (Sex pistols used this technique to get the distortion on never mind the bolloks. And Roland JC 120’s are really loud 120 watt solid state amps that’ve been around for years, prices start at a little less than that of a twin. My dad says JC 120’s are some of the loudest amps ever built.
I realize these are all combos, but they should fit your requirements.

Randy JaneParticipantI think that maybe im a dummy, but maybe it couldve been my cable/s. I hooked the head to my Mackie as a power amp and tested it like that, and it does fine….or maybe it doesnt like my 412 cab or something. Either way, I need new cables, and a power amp. I am thinking about the Carvin 1000 watt power amp, they said it would go well with my ’79 Peavey SP2s. Anyone know anything about Carvin stuff? I want loud!!!
December 8, 2001 at 12:34 am #55914
malcomParticipantHaven’t heard anything BAD about Carvin, mostly that its high quality for its low price. QSC is also pretty good. But also gotta say that if you ever get a chance to acquire a used Crown or Crest power amp, buy it! These are the creme de la creme of indestructability. Kurt Cobain couldn’t even blow these mothers!

GideonParticipantIf you’re on a tight budget, look for a second-hand amp provided its in good condition. I just got a second hand Mesa Boogie Studio Pre-amp for £300 which is about $450. If most guitar mags will have a second hand section of advertisments in the back or whatever so look around, that way you can get cool gear for a lower price.

Randy JaneParticipantGideon: you suck dude! Go for that crazy sound! I want one of those bad.
OK, seeing as I dont want to buy 3 cabs for like $735, then turn around and buy like new a head for the other stack, is this a possibilty for me?
When i get a power amp for the PA, that will free up my Peavey guitar head that im currently using as a power amp. When that happens, could I take my one head (210 watts, 4 or 8 ohms) and hook all four cabs up to the one head? All of the cabs have an In and Out jack on the back of them. Other than working, would it be loud enough for me? Im figuring it would cut the volume a lot.
I think Kurt only used the Mesa studio pre, and a power amp, and that was his only head, for like 8 marshall cabs. If not that, he did have 8 cabs on stage, 4 on each side, untill Pat got there. You can see most all 8 on the Wishkah cd and some other Pics.
Anyway, would it work and be loud enough? Thanks RJ.December 16, 2001 at 6:25 pm #55917
GideonParticipantHey if you wanna know anything about Kurt Cobain’s gear go to this web address
http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Towers/8712/kurtseq.html
I stumbled across it when I was on the Nirvana internet fan club website.
As for the whole cabs and power amp thing, I don’t know, except on a few pictures I’ve seen of Kurt’s rack, it looks as if hhe has 2 power amps. Maybe they can only power 4 cabs each or something. This could be the case, coz Billy Corgan used two power amps for Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (apparently he basic sound of MCIS was a Marshall JMP-1 preamp combined with an Alesis 3630 compressor into two Mesa/Boogie Strategy 500 power amps. The Strategy 500 power amps are each 200 watts.)
Seeing as I don’t have a band or anything I just plug my boogie into my little Kustom 10 watt amp (incindentally the worst amp ever made – it hasn’t even got eq controls) or this 65 watt peavey combo I’ve got.
If you do decide to use a power amp, a solid state one might be a good idea as you don’t have to change any components ever really and they last real long. However, valve ones sound a lot better in my opinion, but they’re usually more expensive.
Also one idea if you want to go really loud, and you like the sound of your Peavey is to run it into a power amp or two, if your head has an external speaker socket or two then plug a power amp in there, and use it to power your cabs.December 17, 2001 at 12:11 am #55918
Randy JaneParticipantHey, i couldnt get the link to work. I think really the only thing thats fuzzy with me about his stuff is his amp/s. I dont know if youve ever been to it, but Jag-stang.com, dude, those people dont know a lot about stuff and there pretty darn rude too. They didnt know that Gibson made V’s, and they thought Kurt played white Mustangs, as far as I know, he never owned a white mustang. There are some old pics of him with a guitar with no name, white, and looked like a mustang, but were a Fender something from the 60’s, but not a Mustang. Anyway, after I win the lottery, ill buy all of these power amps, I think im up to needing 3 now? and the rest of these cabs
Well, you know, if I bought 3 Carvin power amps (new cause there cheap and good to talk about) it would be around, $1,049 without shipping. Taking away from the one that i have to have for the PA, $699.98 Now, if were to get on Ebay, I think that I could find a good Marshall Mosfet, or a JCM800!!! for that price. Im still looking at around $1500 if I get the power amp, and wait, I do have two heads, duh! sorry, im a retard, i have a Peavey Sessionbass head, will work for now…for distortion, that plus my stupid dod preamp, should do the trick. so, cabs, and a power amp, and an a/b box….argh, life is too expensive…..my bassist has a cab too though, oh well…yeah, rj.December 19, 2001 at 5:46 pm #55919
GideonParticipantBummer about that site getting closed down, but buy sheer luck, I found that I had copied onto my home computer, what the guy who made the site had to say on Kurt’s Guitars, Amps and Effects.
If you want, post your email address and I can mail them to you as attachements or whatever.
Oh and by the way, Kurt never had a white Mustang, he had 2 sonic blue ones for the In Utero tour which look white under the stage lights. He is holding one on the wishkah cover, in the pic of him kneeling down near his effects.December 19, 2001 at 9:56 pm #55920
Randy JaneParticipantMy email address is in my profile.
Yeah thats what i was talking about, I knew he didnt have any white mustangs, but they didnt. Actually I think Kurt had 3 Sonic Blue Mustangs, but his guitar tech guy kept two in boxes at Kurts house, and was just going to pull them out as he trashed them which he never got to do. He did however throw the Comp/Stang (Teen spirit video guitar) on the stage and did some damage on the bottom of the guitar and did some heel damage as well, so being his favorite Mustang, he put it in storage. Do you know what guitar was in his bathtub that got ruined? And whatever happend to that red Epiphone from Bleach era with three to a side tuners and black pickgaurd and you probablly already know what im talking about.
