"I leave LA next week to start working on a new Dinosaur record… yup, it’s true… The ultimately once-unlikely likelyhood… [] I steal hours and play bass, maybe I’ll write some Dinosaur songs…" (Lou)

yup, they are holed up in WMass pretty much until they leave for the Australasia tour. "pre production" was what I was originally told but perhaps they’ll actually be recording some songs.

Perhaps those Down Under will get to hear some new stuff. :o

So what does everyone think the new Dinosaur Jr album will sound like? Will it be a return to the early Dinosaur Jr sound of the first three albums or will it sound more like everything from Green Mind forward, including the two Fog releases. I hope it sounds more like J’s recent stuff just because that is what I am a bigger fan of.

id think they might shoot for their old style..? but who knows.

maybe j and lou will just both write some songs and theyll go with that not really shooting for any style.

No matter what they go for it will be great, I mean can you name a bad Dinosaur(jr) album after bug and all the Sebadoh stuff is really solid work. Personally I think this album will be really sonic, pulling from J and Lou’s twisted minds with the backbeat of Murph thundering down the drums. I expect greatness in ’06!

I don’t think they’ll go straight for the old sound but it will probably sound more like the old stuff than the other Dino or J’s stuff. I’m guessing J and Lou will each write a few songs each and it will be really good. Can’t wait to hear it!

The bare fact that J will be playing with a live rhythm section, in real time, during the recording will, I think, result in a much different feel from the Fog and post-Where You Been Dino stuff. There’s just no substitute for band interaction in a recording. As for the tenor of the material itself, who knows? Bottom line: it’s going to rule, given the guys involved.

By "live" rhythm section I mean, at the very least, featuring contributions by a drummer and bassist who aren’t J (duh) and who therefore have their own styles, and who’ve rehearsed and crafted the songs together live, as a functioning unit (as we’ve seen in those pics). It makes a big difference, conceptually, to have worked up material as a group as opposed only to having a finished song built up out of tracks a single guy has laid down piece by piece.

Righto fellow fans, I have the word from the man himself – I did a telephone interview with J this afternoon (New Zealand time).

Yes, it’s true, there is a new album in the pipeline….but don’t hold your breath, because J says progress has been very slow and they’re not getting very far with it. He’s hopeful it’ll be out on the North American summer, but isn’t too confident it will be because they’re just taking ages to do stuff on it (about 1 song, so far).

It’s to be recorded at J’s studio at his home in Amherst. Forgot to ask what label it would be on. He didn’t have a name for the new record yet either. He’s having to teach Murph all the new songs.

He didn’t say much else about it. Mind you, in the space of a 20-min interview, he didn’t say a whole hell of a lot anyway…as you’d expect (still, it was nice to talk to him and thank him personally for a wonderful body of D Jr work).

Maybe on tour they can find some quality to work with in a short period. Sometimes a band will kind of just stumble upon a song and it’s a hit. Then all of the sudden there are 2 or 3 songs and one that’s played on tour as a preview for what’s to come on the new album. This is easily the most anticipated album of the year.

Seemed no guarantee it’d be this year, judging by J’s comment. But here’s hoping, right. Roll on Northern Summer…and whatever-the-new-album-might-be-called!
