Thanks for the sentiments, everyone. Actually, the pleasure is all mine. As for Nick’s question, The drums that I used on the Fog dates in the US were my early 70’s, blue Ludwig Vistalites. The sizes are 14"x24" bass drum, 10"x14" rack tom, and a 16"x18" floor tom. This is the same kit that I used for the "Hand It Over" and "Wiyhout A Sound" US tours as well. The only difference was that on the Dino tours, I used a 16"x16" floor tom as well. Here’s some more trivia for you. These same drums were used by J to record "Goin’ Blind" for that Kiss tribute album. Murph also used the two floor toms the first time those guys appeared on the Letterman show (I think that the song was "The Wagon", though I can’t recall with certainty.) I also played this drum set on the Gobblehoof album, "Freezerburn". The singer in Gobblehoof was Charlie Nakajima, of Deep Wound fame, and the bass player was frequent Dino Jr cameo man, Kurt Fedora. Additionally, the drums that I played on the most recent European tour were a smoke colored Vistalite, which J cobbled together on e-Bay. That kit is being stored in Europe for future use. Why Ludwig Vistalites? They were the drums that John Bonham used in the early to mid 1970’s. They can be seen on the Led Zeppelin movie, "the Song Remains the Same". That’s all for now. -George-

And i thought those drums were Pearl. Wow! and you get the same drums JB used. Too cool! Too cool! I want to buy the blue Ludwigs when you all want to rid the drums

Yeah, my bud has the letterman on video. It is "Wagon" and Murph stands up the whole time while he is playing drums plus only plays the two floor toms, a snare, and a couple cymbals (i think!) Wow! those drums have been around! Way too cool! Man, I got to check out that video again. Anyways. thank for the response and take it easy.

I’ve got both Gobblehoofer’s they’re ace. I like the first one, though my Gran prefer’s ‘Freezerburn’ it’s more rockin’ (I played it her on her 70th birthday bash). On Mike Watt’s New Alliance label too…how things integrate…it’s astounding!!!!

Incidently I’m sure Eric Gaffney appears on the first Gobblehoof album…this is interesting for all you Sebadoh fans out there I imagine.

Spoke to Kurt Fedora once many moons ago when J played acoustic in Manchester, UK. He was quite the gent…he was really pleased that I knew Gobblehoof.

What are all those Deep Wound, Gobblehoof guys up to now then??

    Dear George,

(This is sort of embarassing.) I’m sorry for accidently, and I stress accidently, spitting on you at the Richmond show in April. I was drinking something and my friend elbowed me in the gut. I am very sorry. Please do not hate me.

I’m sure Gaffney is on the live photo on the insert of the 12" – maybe they just thank him.

I’ll check it out when I get home from work.

As for my Gran. Her ears definitely reacted to some Gobblehoof sound…I exageratted somewhat though (artistic license an’ all)…it was on my sister’s 21st. She was sat in our living room to "chill out" I was listening to ‘freezerburn’ with some mates who I dragged home from Uni…thought it hilarious at the time. This was number of year back now…My gran didn’t move so I guess she dug those heavy rock sounds.

ha hah…I’m such a bullshitter at times…all the above was true though.

Hey folks. I guess that I’ll answer a few questions. First, Eric Gaffney was actually the original drummer in Gobblehoof, but only for the first two practices. Yes, he is thanked on the ep, but is not in the live photo, as he never played live with the band. J recorded the ep on drums, and played the first one or two shows, one of which was opening for the Lemonheads in Boston. He also filled in for me for one show when I was in Jamaica. The original bass player was Jens Jurgensen, who was most recently playing bass in Boss Hog. Charlie Nakajima was the singer in the Hoof. as well as in Deep Wound. He’s been out of touch with me for about a year now. Tim Aaron was the guitarist and chief songwriter. He now lives in L.A. and plays with a bunch of different projects out there. There was a second guitarist for a couple of years named Sean Keefe. He now lives in San Francisco with his wife. Kurt Fedora took over the bass duties from Jens, and is still active in the Western Massachusetts music scene. I took oner the drums from J in 1989. J produced the "Freezerburn" record, which was recorded at Fort Apache – South, in Boston. The engineer on those sessions was Sean Slade.
As for the Deep Wound guys, I’ve already mentioned Charlie, and I think that you all know what J and Lou are up to. The bass player in Deep Wound was my childhood, backyard BMX buddy, Scott Helland. Scott also played in a band of note called The Outpatients. He now resides here in New York City, and releases CDs of his own stuff called Hell and the Scott. I would say that Deep Wound was the band responsible for getting all of these other bands (Gobblehoof, Dino Jr., and Sebadoh) started. J, Charlie and Murph are from Amherst, Mass. Lou, Scott, Kurt and myself all went to the same highschool in Westfield, Mass. The two towns are about 20 miles apart, but might as well worlds apart. Amherst is a college town, and Westfield is a mostly closed down mill town. Together. it combined to make gritty, well informed, punk rock. I would say that Deep Wound brought the two disparate parts together.

thanks for the information George…I will now be able to impress my friends with my superior knowledge of the Gobblehoof, Dino, Deep Wound history.

just one more question: What about Mr. Gaffney?

I saw a CD by him when I was in New York…but other than that he’s disappeared.

I think you’ll agree that he was quite a character…’member seeing Sebadoh and he recommended that the Kids (audience) do heroin.

    fucking genius.

I know, I know…it would be to much to ask to hear the new Fog tunes. I just remember how amped up I was to hear them a few years ago on Freakscene, months before they were released. Sure, they ended up on Napster and a lot of people burnt CD’s (oh my, I am guilty of this as well)….but guess what? I went the DAY it came out and supported the band by buying the actual CD. I love J.’s music so much, its no problem at all. I can’t wait to hear the new tunes….just cant wait. I’ll be sure to check here from time to time to catch a release date. Keep em rollin fellas!

And while Im on here, I noticed that George was here, I’d like to say hi. I met you out back of 328 Perf. Hall when you came through Nashville in March. I remeber your tale of getting a piece of the stadium as memorabilia when you saw Black Sabbath. Anyway, the show was beyond my dreams…thanks for the memory’s. And as a fellow drummer I enjoyed bs’ing with you about the Vistalites. If I find a set they are mine! I am a huge Bonham fan as well…and damn did they sound great! Be a neat set to fool around with. Thats one biug ass kick drum! Later bro, hope to see you down south again!

Shane, I always love rapping the drum talk. Feel free to continue the banter here. I realize that you posted this back in August, but my computer crapped out, ironically enough, on Sept. 11, 2001. Granted, it was at, like 1AM. Who knew that a mere 8 hours later my city would be under attack. But now I’m back in action, so I look forward to spielin’ with ya’ll.
