RobertParticipantI guess it was only a matter of time before this happened. My hybris has sprung into full bloom, and I’ve decided that I can make a much better internet radiostation than the ones out there. I am not talking about having debates, interviews etc, just sort of creating the ultimate playlist.
So, does anyone have any experience with this? Also, will I be breaking any copyright laws by setting up such a radiostation?July 18, 2004 at 4:04 pm #103641
Bucky RamoneParticipantNo experience over here, but with some Google searching with "setting up your own internet radio" I found this article discussing the tevhical and legal aspects (and some 450 other articles…)

RobertParticipantthanks for the link buckmeister! well it seems my fears were right, I’ll have to pay some sort of fees to keep it legal :slap:

AnnastefkaParticipantSo what are the fees like? How much? Don’t give up the dream.

AnthonyParticipantyou just got to know what you are doing….
windows 2000 server has ‘media streaming services’ built in.
you would need some low-bandwidth files or your bandwidth bill would be through the roof.i can write more later, i am late for work right now !

RobertParticipantBandwidth bill
The only thing I’m really worried about, until someone explains to me what bandwidth bills are, is whether or not someone that shouldn’t find out finds out that I’m streaming music for my friends, and then wants to put my nuts in a blender.

AnthonyParticipantexample:
i pay money to a company who provides me a server.
They allow me a certain amount of bandwidth each month.
everytime someone/something accesses my server FOR ANYTHING, they are using my bandwidth to get the information from my computer to theirs.
the more bandwidth you have, the more you an accomodate.example:
you have an mp3 file on your server that is 10 megabytes.and i just downloaded it from you.
I just used 10 megabytes of your bandwidth.
now 2,000 other people just downloaded the same file.
now you’re at 20,000 megabytes of bandwidth for that file.
add in 1,000 other files available for download, and you have 2,000 people downloading them….
the numbers can get very large.August 10, 2004 at 12:43 pm #103647
RobertParticipantThanks for the bandwidth 101 Anthony.
does the same apply for a internet based radiostation, since the songs won’t be downloaded, just streamed or whatever it’s called.
