AGAPParticipantHey,
Just wondering what music helps you guys out there to focus and get things done on time. Recently went thru two weeks of hellish work to meet a deadline(s), something I am really not good at I tend to research stuff to death, have to know everything I can about the subject…even when I don’t have to…insane…YES Still reading the stuff after I handed in the papers…
Always need some background noise to help me focus (along with mega doses of caffeine), these are the groups that seem to enhance my ability to focus on the task at hand…
Flaming Lips
MBV
Swervedriver
Lemonheads
JAMC
Mercury RevStuff that just doesn’t work for me, way too distracting…
All Dinosaur Jr and Mascis songs
Stooges
Ramones
Sonics
Radio BirdmanSo hey what helps you focus, just curious as a couple more deadlines coming closer every day…could use some more tunes to help me focus

AGAPParticipantHey Den Buck,
Gotta say I agree with you about the not to rockin & stuff I know by heart bits, definitely helps with the concentration factor. I still haven’t got the new Mercury Rev, saw it for 35 bucks at a local shop but couldn’t bring myself to spend that much but Deserter’s Songs does the trick for me as well. With you on the can’t do anything with silence thing, always need some noise…even white noise to help with sleep

SGParticipantI like Arvo Part too,I used to listen to alot of ECM stuff, the German label;mix of jazz/classical/jazz-rock stuff on that label,Arvo Part has some music on that label.Gavin Bryars is another composer that ECM has some recordings of,After The Requim is a good album.Alot of the ECM albums are good focus albums.
I find instrumental music works better then music with vocals,so I listened to alot jazz and classical music while writing things or reading.October 29, 2001 at 3:32 pm #66106
K7 Rides AgainParticipanthey AGAP, definately agree on NOT listening to Dino when trying to focus…always end up just listening to J and letting my mind wander.
Not sure why, but when I need to hunker down
Sonic Youth’s Daydream Nation or Washing Machine are the two I always put on. I guess Daydream is just great background music and after the CD ends, I know I’m 70 minutes farther along.
Washing Machine is so energetic/intense, that
it just gets me pumped and really focused in.And I’m not sure why, but I can usually accomplish a lot to ODB. Something about the bass to the noggin, it’s just energizing.
peace everyoneOctober 29, 2001 at 3:37 pm #66107
everyonelovesjaronParticipantI dunno, I’m prolly weird, but anything I like I cannot listen to or I can’t concentrate. Maybe coldplay, but that’s it.
Def not dino/modest mouse/pumpkins/nin/or anything else loud.

passionParticipant…well here are some favourites Allison…
Tindersticks Spain Mark Lanegan Motorpsycho
Ed Alleyne-Johnson(its electric violin) Evan Lurie
Elliot Smith Calexico Madrugada (they are really great specially the last two ep) and of course some slow songs… October 29, 2001 at 4:28 pm #66109
AGAPParticipantHey,
Kurticus never thought of trying Daydream Nation, will be up next when I need to focus J ‘s music does tend to distract me in both good & bad ways, have to pretty much have all those discs out of my reach if I need to really focus. If not hx has shown that I will put them on no matter what…avoidance issues…definitely Have been working on this stuff at work recently, no internet connection and no zillions of discs to distract me just the ones I choose to bring.
Passion some great suggestions there, seems I will have to check out Motorpsycho, couple other cool freakscene people seem to think they are worth a listen as well
Jaron I agree MM is just way too distracting, but I do need volume with my tunes no matter what.
SG sounds like you have found what works well for you…cool. I need vocals though or I add my own Trying to figure out how to turn off RadioAllison when needing to focus, Dinosaur/J always seems to come on at the wrong time

SGParticipantI find music with vocals too distracting when I`m working on something, you keep listening to the lyrics and get mixed up.Music with vocals are meant to be listened to when you`re not working on something I find.
I like Passion`s choices too,Spain,Tindersticks,Elliot Smith are great,Calexico I have`nt listened to but 2 guys in that band are in Giant Sand who are a great band,I have 4 of their albums.

Bucky RamoneParticipantWhen I really have to concentrate I noticed that these bands help:
Mercury Rev (the last two albums)
Freakwater
Songs: Ohia (had to edit out a funny Graemlin here )
Tindersticks
Neil Young – Tonight’s the night
Triffidsor great classical stuff:
Hildegard von Bingen
Arvo PartI can’t really work or concentrate in total silence, I am at my best when there is music playing that I know by heart, and just isn’t too ‘rocking’…..

Bucky RamoneParticipantI love Giant Sand, but I don’t play that when I have to work, always some strange break or unexpected loud passage distracts me… Calexico works better in that way (but Giant Sand are the better more original band…)
Another great band to have on your cd-player while working: the Walkabouts!
