FlyingCloudParticipantHey Salamiguy and the others,
What I wanted to ask you: I’ve read this and that about Mercury Rev here on the boards and they seem to be good. I’ve never heard a song of them though.
Now they’re playing here tomorrow, right 5 minutes away from my flat and I’m thinking about to go to that gig.
As downloading songs takes endless time and I don’t know where to start, could you recommend some songs of Mercury Rev which I could download to get a first imprssion? is it worth while to go to that gig?
Many thanks in advance

FlyingCloudParticipantthank you, guys.
will check out some of their songs now.October 21, 2001 at 2:37 am #66061
Bucky RamoneParticipantWell, if you’ve got the chance to see Mercury Rev, my advice is: go! They are one of the really great bands that are around today (and not a lot of people know that…). I’m going to see them in Amsterdam in a weeks time. Their ‘Deserter’s Songs’ album, and this years ‘All is dream’ are both amazing albums, live they might be totally differemt, but great as well!!!!
So, my advice: Go and see them!!!!!

FlyingCloudParticipantI persuaded a friend to join me and we went to the gig today. It was really great, I immediately liked their music. Fine show, great songs
Thank you again for your advice!
Will order a record of Mercury Rev now.October 22, 2001 at 10:20 am #66063
SGParticipantGlad you liked it,FC.It`s cool that people check out what we suggest, awhile ago Allison went to a Eric`s Trip show that I recommended to check out and enjoyed it.
I worry sometimes that with the bands I recommend that if people check them out that they might not like them, that`s the risk they take, they should download some songs before hand so they know what it`s gonna be like.October 23, 2001 at 7:10 pm #66064
HansioneParticipantFlying cloud, it’s good to read that you saw a good Rev-gig. I’m attending one coming fryday and I am rather anxious to see them, for the first time. I love deserter’s songs + All is dream and I’m looking forwards to see the saw – singing

FlyingCloudParticipantyeah, the singing saw thing was good. They did it as an encore.

turnipfarmerParticipantglad to hear that you all like MR! I attended their gig last Saturday, and it was just amazing. they perform their songs much more powerful and guitarized than on their (last 2) albums, so some people may have felt rocked into the corner, but I dug it. I can’t remember to see a band doing their job with such joyousness and gratitude.
yeah, the singing saw thing was just fun, they even played 2 older songs (Chasing A Bee, Frittering) which were really exciting to hear as they are quite far away now from the style they had when these songs came out.

SGParticipantFrittering is one of my fav songs by them, that would have been cool to see them perform that.

HansioneParticipantYou’ll get a short review of the gig coming fryday and if you’re lucky, den buck, who is apperently there too, will add some wise words to this board as well! are you not big guy?

Bucky RamoneParticipantMercury Rev’s gig yesterday evening in Amsterdam was truly amazing! The hall in the Melkweg was totally packed, the sound was near-perfect, the lightshow was stunningly beautiful, and the music…. well, Mercury Rev is one of the best live bands I know, they keep the spirit of their songs intact although they play them much more rocking and electric than on their albums. Highlight of the evening ‘Opus 40’, which started as itself, and ended in a beautiful psychedelic guitar/feedback-drone (complete with stroboscopic lights….)
And well, after the gig I saw this rather tall guy with not that much hair aka Hansione, we went over to the Paradiso, where For Stars were playing, an excellent band as well, check out their ‘We are all beautiful people’ album, the sound a little like a cross between Eels and Grandaddy, with a touch of Neil Youngish vocals…..
And somehow we ended up drinking beer at the upstairs bar in Paradiso, with the new Ryan Adams album as background-music, a GREAT night!!!!!!

HansioneParticipantOh Well, Den Buck rerevieuwd me. What can I say, the gig was great, the sound so good that the singing saw wasn’t realy missing. I was realy stunned by the atmosphere that was created by the guys of Rev! Can you imagine that seeing Rev was just a part of the whole thing. Giant Sant, six great lake, bicycle thief, Jim White and the cosmic rough riders were also there and I even missed Eels!
Great festival though!!!October 29, 2001 at 8:18 pm #66071
FlyingCloudParticipanthey den buck, hansione & Turnipfarmer, nice to read your reviews, because I enjoyed the Rev gig very much, too. It was in fact one of the best gigs I’ve seen in months. Dense atmosphere, catchy tunes, cool sound effects and an excentric singer – what else do you need?
I’ve bought the "all is a dream" album lately, and it’s surprisingly calm, compared with the gig, but I like it though
hansione, sounds like a cool festval -
