inklingParticipantSpeaking of "indie" and "alternative"; Has anyone heard the Stephen Malkmus album and is it worth it? I’ve been curious, but not sold. I’ve also heard a lot of great reviews, mostly all positive feedback. Just thought I’d ask you all before buying something that just might be, you guessed it – overrated. Word up…..

JavroModeratorHe is one of the best creative musicians I have seen over the past ten years. Breaking away from Pavement was a good thing for him. The album is amazing, listen and let it grow. And if you get the chance to see him and the Jicks, grab it with both hands. Every time he plays in the UK I’ll travel anywhere to see him – same as with J. Reading festival in August is the next gig.
Sorry to disagree Jaron, but it ain’t the first, and certainly won’t be the last time.
Anything to do with him majorly dissing Billy and the Pumpkins???

</STRONG><HR></BLOCKQUOTE>What exactly do you disagree on? All I said was he wasn’t the greatest musician ever, as some made him out to be. You think he is the 2nd coming of the Messiah?
I was really unaware he had dissed the Pumpkins.

dimpfelmoserParticipantI´m with Albini on that.
But let me tell you more about the Pavement /Pumpkins vendetta. Because of this lines in Range Life (which are really harmless I think) the Smashing Pumpkins refused to share the Backstage at the Lolopaloza (or however it is spelled) tour the following year and because they couldn´t really build another backstage, Pavements slot was cancelled as by then the Smashing Pumpkins were more famous. And I think it says a lot about them, that they don´t care about all the people who came to see Pavement, just because they are to fussy when it comes to sharing the backstage with someone who doesn´t like you that much.
Pretentious gits.

inklingParticipantYes, I too have to agree w/ Albini, as well as Pavement. Those Pumpkins always seem to be walking around w/ their noses in the air. Prima donnas!
Hey dimfelmoser-
I’d like to hear your take on the solo Malkmus record. If you’ve heard it, please enlighten me. I’m hoping it’s more acoustic as oppossed to the Pavement "cut-and-paste" approach. Anyone should comment if you’re a Pavement fan, or better yet, if you think this record is something different or better. Come on, let’s hear it………….July 27, 2001 at 2:22 am #64215
SGParticipantHis famous diss of the Pumpkins is from Pavement`s "range life"
"Out on tour with the Smashing Pumpkins, nature kids I/they don`t have no function,I don`t understand what they mean and I really could give a fuck."He later said in an interview that"I like some of their songs,it`s their ideology I can`t stand."
Steve Albinni called the Pumpkins"career empty opportunists".

The closest to compare would be with something like Carrot Rope from the last Pavement album. Much more melody, equally weird lyrics.
I have a feeling that there was already some postings re the latest Malkmus album. Where they are however, is beyond me.
My memory ain’t my best feature, knowwatimean.

dimpfelmoserParticipantI have to admit that I havent heard much of it yet and the bits I´ve heard were really what you would expect. For me Pavement peaked with Crooked Rain and although the things they recorded after that were kind of ok, in my view they weren´t going to save indie rock as I thought they would when Slanted and enchanted came out. So I lost interest to some degree. Plus, the last time I saw Pavement live (two years ago) I was really pissed off by their refusal to talk to the audience. I mean, you don´t have to go for the "Hey Germany, do you wanna Rocknroll!" approach, but to ignore the crowd completly was just so rude. It was a rather lacklustre affair, no verve left and it really seemed that it was time to call it a day. However, I´m not too keen on people, leaving perfectly good bands to take the singer/songwriter careeroption. But yeah, if it´s any good, I sure will give it a listen.

SGParticipantI agree with dimpfelmoser;Pavement peaked with Crooked Rain, when I bought that album I was pretty amazed by it,bought Slanted not long after. In 95 when they released Wowee Zowee I was disapointed, some songs were good but in comparison with the other 2 albums it`s was`nt very impressive;Brighten The Corners was better but still was`nt as good as Crooked Rain,Terror Twilight I never bothered buying.
I heard a couple of tunes from the Malkmus solo record,I thought they were good.Nothing is going to beat those first 2 Pavement albums.
One more thing about Pavement;I heard in 97 that Pavement won`t play a show for under 10 000 U.S. dollars.Seems alot of money for an indie band.July 30, 2001 at 10:50 am #64219
dimpfelmoserParticipantwell, guess they are alternative then.

JebusParticipantI thought Malk was the "milk substitute" that Fat Tony and the Mob were selling to Springfield Elementry….rat’s milk as it were…
