Quote:Dinosaur Jr’s J Mascis has launched a new band, the gently named Sweet Apple. The group, featuring members of Cobra Verde and Witch, are to release their debut album on 30 March 2010.
Their formation was announced with suitably dramatic language, claiming to have "been born by accident and friendship – out of death, after a cross-country drive". Apparently, singer-guitarist John Petkovic went on a road trip after the death of his mother; he headed east from Cleveland, smoking cigarettes, not knowing where he was headed. Eventually, he met up with Mascis and Witch bassist Dave Sweetapple, both old friends. And Mascis told him to write some songs. "I tell people that I saved John’s life by starting this band," he said. "But they don’t believe me."
Petkovic enlisted guitarist Tim Parnin, his band-mate from Cobra Verde, and before long they were recording the album Love and Desperation in Cleveland and Massachusetts. "I hadn’t even played guitar for months," Petkovic explained, "and then, out of the blue, there were all these songs." The record was mixed by Don Depew and long-time Dinosaur Jr producer John Agnello.
While the band’s MySpace songs aren’t currently working, they describe their sound as "a wide net [of] … catchy power-pop, crushing rock and wounded ballads". According to a poster at the Sound Opinion message-board, Petkovic said in September that Sweet Apple have more of a "glam rock" vibe. However, we prefer the genre descriptions chosen by the from MySpace’s default tags: "Powerpop / New Wave / Healing and Easy Listening," they wrote. Just as long as they play it loud.December 3, 2009 at 7:00 am #137037

Listen to Sweet Apple "Do You Remember" here-
Pretty good tune, definitely got a Mascis solo. I don’t usually get into the whole "straight-ahead rock" sound, find it pretty boring, but this is actually good. I think I’d like it even if I didn’t know J was part of it
Looking forward to hearing more!December 5, 2009 at 10:28 am #137041
It’s rock-n-roll, plain and simple.
I like it.December 5, 2009 at 2:06 pm #137042
Hello, it’s me, do you remember? LOL…been a while since I posted here and I’m in a little bit of a different place in my life now but still diggin’ the J. Was lucky enough to see the Dino tour last spring in Lancaster PA and the Witch tour in DC in Jan 09. Both rocked mightily and I"m sure Sweet Apple will rock just as hard live. I have been hearing about this record off and on for over a year and wasn’t sure if it was ever going to get released, or was it just something done for fun/ therapeutic value, but glad that it’s finally coming out.December 5, 2009 at 2:49 pm #137043
Agree with You BloodyEars. Never liked that kind of rock. But this got the J drum sound with all his drum-fills that makes it more fun.
The song reminds me a little of Gumball.December 6, 2009 at 9:35 am #137044

I think Do You Remember sounds like Husker Du. Which is weird considering that that’s what their name means.
