tomParticipantThursday, October 17th,@The Magic Stick in Detroit
Cobra Verde opened up. They did a good job. They sounded to me like Mick Ronson and Thurston Moore decided to play guitar fin a rock band. Verde even threw in a cover of David Bowies, Heroes, which was cool.
J was in top form. His voice was the absolute best I’ve ever heard it. (I do think his voice sounds it’s best on the new album). I’ve seen J play live acoustically three other times, and his playing was at it’s best. The Z Vex Loop efffect that allows J to have a rhytmn play behind him while he is soloing adds a lot to the show. J played the almost the entire set acoustic, but plugged his blue Jazzmaster with the gold pickguard into the Fender amp he used to use as a monitor when touring electric, to play Ammaring and Freakscene, ending the night. Amma was incredible. like it always is, but every single song sounded great. I was lucky enough to get the set list!

The singer(on bass) and drummer came on the stage for If Thats How Its Gotta Be. They started to play about halfway though the song, when the drums kick in, and it was great. They also played with J on Amma and Freakscene to end the night. I must admit it was strange seeing J play his Jazzmaster with only one amp instead of 5 Marshall stacks, but the intensity was there, and the amp seemed like it was going to blow up or melt!
The show was perfect, but I wish J wouldve played Drawerings, my all time favorite. J definatley seemed to be in a good mood, but I wish he would’ve talked a little more between songs. He usually says some of the funniest things, but he was pretty quiet between songs.
This was the best acoustic J show I’ve ever seen, and I can’t wait until tonights show in Cleveland!

p.s. I did meet Chris from Freakscene at the show. He’s a great guy. It’s nice to know your not the only person who has a picture of themselve with J, buys outrageous amounts of J/Dino stuff on ebay, or hits multiple shows on every tour. I was happy to know I’m not the only addict, or a little strange, when it comes to how much I like Dinosaur jr/J. Looking forward to seeing J, Chirs, and other Freakscene members in Cleveland.October 18, 2002 at 5:38 pm #62932
everyonelovesjaronParticipantSounds awesome. Better setlist then the DC show earlier this year, but what can we expect: it’s Detroit!
J needs to come back to Richmond.
