J. Mascis & the Fog’s Troubadour Adventure

So I hit the Troubadour show tonight, Friday the 17th, and damn was it sweeter than a virgin on prom night. I went to one of the shows at Slim’s in San Francisco, and the in-store at Amoeba a few days prior to that. Those were both good, but this show was, by far, the best.

On our way in we spotted Tim Meadows at the ticket window. I thought this was funny because I’d heard just a few days before this show, from my friend Ryan, that Meadows was a huge Mascis fan.

Anyhow, Mascis, Watt, and Berz, came out blazing with Mike’s House and truly didn’t let up. The set was a bit different than the show I saw at Slim’s, but still included the Stooges covers. The set was 21 songs long, and we were in the front on the right-hand side of the stage. Right where J. wails. Anyhow, that’s enough for now, it was a great show, here’s the set list.

P.S. I was so tired when I got home last night I forgot to add that George Berz couldn’t hear his monitor, and they wouldn’t turn it up, so they turned up Watt’s Bass instead. Well 20 minutes after they turned it up, his amp/head started smoking! Once they realized it, they turned it down, but it was pretty funny. Even so, it continued to smoke until close to the end of the show.

Attended Friday’s (Nov. 17) J Mascis & the Fog show at the Troubadour. Threzor’s set list is dead on accurate. Definitely one of the best shows J has put on in Los Angeles. (My favorite is still the show Dinosaur Jr. put on at the Roxy in support of Dinosaur’s last album…just because J played drums during a song Mike Johnson sang and J is an amazing drummer) I was on the balcony for this show and it was loud. So loud the balcony was visibly vibrating. The place was packed to the girders. As noted by Threzor, Tim Meadows was there. Mike Watt was great. He did not blow any clams I could surmise. Watt is so animated. His legs were shaking throughout the show. During "More Light," he went to the back of the stage and stood behind Berz. Figured it was because it got so loud during that song. The songs off the new album sounded great. Sadly, the crowd was not that animated, especially in the balcony. Seems like only five of us in the balcony were really into it. I saw about 10 people in the balcony taking off before the encore. That was really fucked up, especially cause they played Freak Scene during the encore and I was so happy they played Freak Scene because I had never seen it performed live before (except in the documentary, "The Year that Punk Broke"). J’s guitar work was masterful. His vocals were pushed up a bit too far because there was a lot of fuzz on them. Nevertheless, great show all around.

I have to agree…I was at the San Francisco shows, the SF in-store, the LA in-store, both Troubadour shows AND the San Diego show and the 2nd night at the Troubadour was the best. They were just "on" that night! And you could tell…they added a few extra songs to the set. I filmed all the shows and in-stores and can’t wait to stick some of them onto CD.

Hey Apache…thanks for the balcony recommendation…nice up there…great view of the band and close up, too.
How did you get a videocamera in there ?
I tried to sneak a disposable camera in there and they confiscated it. (It’s OK though, it was a freebie thanks to Jeremiah’s Hot Deals page).
Did not follow you ear plugs recommendation. Wasn’t that bad from the balcony. Ears only rang for one day.

Thanks for the great reviews of the la shows, much prefer fan insite on shows versus some of the other media. That last review….someone must have stolen his blanky….BITE ME comes to mind. Hate to judge people on such little info but yikes sounds like the person failed at intro psych never mind Mascis 101!!!!

I traveled with the tour for a week, filming all the shows and in-store performances. From San Francisco all the way down through LA and down to San Diego. I didn’t "sneak" the camcorder in, I had Eric (the tour manager) get me press passes for all the shows, so that I could get in early, set up and film w/o any problems from the house manager of the club. I have about 30-40 different DinoJr shows on video, and about 1200 different shows in my whole collection.

Critics suck balls… That’s what they are, they’re fucking critical bastards… The only sad part is that it can influence people who may otherwise actually LIKE whatever’s being critiqued… And not that anybody cares, but as we were leaving the show, across the street from the Troubadour, Tiffany Amber Theissen was stopped at the stoplight as we crossed Santa Monica Boulevard…

By the way, Apache, were you the guy inthe front on the far left at the Amoeba In-Store…?

Hmmm..at the SF in-store, yes I was up in the front on the left side next to the soundboard. I guess you were there then?? It was a cool lil acoustic show, wasn’t it? The video came out nicely too…
