Bucky RamoneParticipantSounds cool, Marc Benning’s previous band was 34 Satellite (and [useless trivia fact] he used to be married to Hazeldine’s Shawn Barton
) 34 Satellite were a cool band as well, I’ve got both their albums…
(I think I mentioned them on FS a couple of times)
A short review from Magnet Magazine
CARRIER -Carrier
Living in a remote area of the Rocky Mountains can make a person go a little squirelly, a la Jack Nicholson in The Shining. Upon first hearing the lonesome-wailer chorus on Carrier’s “Finally Over Water,â€? you’d swear frontman Marc Benning had lost it and kidnapped J Mascis. Benning has made no secret of his love for the work of Dinosaur Jr; he even had the long-haired icon contribute guitar to a pair of albums by his previous band, 34 Satellite. When Benning’s high, clear tenor isn’t triggering thoughts of Dino Jr, it’s similar to Ben Gibbard from Death Cab For Cutie, who sounds like a less zonked, more vulnerable Mascis. Luckily, the songs have such a wide-open feel and memorable melodies, the similarities hardly matter. Benning wrote the tunes but gathered various friends to help make the album: Brandon Aikin (Panel Donor) on guitar and Kliph Scurlock (Flaming Lips) and Jim MacPherson (Breeders, Guided By Voices) on drums. Though it aims to be a rollicking Crazy Horse-style collective with ragged guitar salvos and thundering percussion, the ad hoc nature of the band and the fact the record is such a “studio albumâ€? results in Carrier sounding more like a Mildly Agitated Horse. AGAPParticipantI took the little promo bit on their record label site to mean J played on a song or two on the disc, never thought he toured with them.
I’ve left a message with the label to clarify the info about who guested on the album.
Still love the sound of all the songs I’ve downloaded from the site, hopefully will be able to d/l the album from Hideaway records when they update the site!

doomtownParticipantfrom Hideaway Records website:
"Carrier are joined by friends J Mascis, Kliph Scurlock (Flaming Lips) and Jim McPherson (Breeders, GBV) on the album."Maybe he did play on the Carrier CD as well as the 34 Satellite EP.
I’ve been looking for that 34 Satellite EP for a while now with no luck.
I emailed Hideaway Records to purchase this Carrier CD, but they never responded.
?
Hopefully the store will be open soon, and both will be available.

doomtownParticipantAccording to Big Hassle Media, J also appears on the 34 Satellite "Stop" CD:
"After passing through his share of basement bands and moving to Colorado, Benning formed 34 Satellite, This group released four Hideaway Records discs: Stars (1998). Radar (2000), Stop (2002), and the E.P. Parachutes in Avalon (also 2002). The last two of these included guitar work by J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. and drumming by Jim MacPhereson ex-Breeders/Guided by Voices."
