the show was supposed to start @10:00, so i arrived at the annex around 10:45, hoping to miss most of the cobra verde set, but they may have started late, because i was subjected to another 30-40 minutes of relatively uninspiring music. <img>

after a fairly quick set-up, j finally started his set around 11:45. i think he played pretty much the same songs he has been playing during the recent tour, which all sounded great. after experiencing two fog shows last year, i wasn’t sure what to expect regarding what the volume and sound of the show was going to be like, but in my opinion, they had it almost perfect (ironically though, the guitar probably could have been turned up a bit!). anyhow, it was great hearing all the classics and seeing j hammer out some unbelieveable solos in the process. he really didn’t say a whole lot other than "thanks" or "hello, there", although, he did let out a few high-pitched "wooo!!"s, much to the amusement of the crowd.

so, j finishes the set and goes off for a moment, then comes back and says he and the boys from cobra verde will be doing some stooges covers (which only ended up being one, and since i don’t know much about the stooges, i couldn’t tell you what the song was) for the encore. now, i was initially skeptical, because of my early experience with c.v., but this ended up being the high point of the evening. even though j can handle an acoustic guitar with much skill and proficiency, he just looked more at home when he picked up the strat. and after a mostly sedate, composed first set, it was great to see him gritting his teeth and grimacing, and rockin’ around on stage.

well, it ended up being a rather short performance (i’m pretty sure it clocked in under an hour and a half), but i thought it was great nonetheless. if any of you have the chance to see him from here on out, don’t hesitate.

and, if you’re reading this j, thanks a ton for stopping by madison, and please feel free to drop by again anytime!!

    Hi Dude-

Were you one of the guys I talked to last night? I also had a good time at the Annex. The crowd was kind of small though. J doesn’t seem to draw that big of a crowd in Madison for some reason. I had the opposite reaction to Cobra Verde – I thought they were great. I even bought the cd they were selling. At the beginning of Cobra Verde’s set J was wandering around and I got him to sign my flier to the show. J’s set list looked pretty similar to the one posted from the Columbus show. But he played more songs off of More Light. I saw someone grab the set list and another person taking pics, so hopefully they will be posted. Unlike the Chicago show I went to last December, J had an extra pedal which enabled him to play better and longer solos. Before a song began, he would play the chords which would serve as the background during his guitar solo. The pedal would digitally record these background chords and then replay them when it was solo time. It looked pretty neat. I should get one of those pedals for myself because it seems like an excellent way for someone who is playing alone to practice solos. The Stooges songs in the encore were Loose and then TV Eye. They kind of ran together so it did seem like one song. The only thing I disliked about the show is that I was stuck standing next to the drunkest, dumbest guy I’ve ever seen at a J show. This guy was a total prick. After one song he said to J, “hey, dude, you better clear your throatâ€

nope, i don’t think i was one of the people who talked to you foglight.

i didn’t see the particular asshole you mentioned, but i do recall j responding to the "better clear your voice" comment. i don’t think he actually spit, but i thought it was a funny response on j’s part anyhow. it’s a shame that there always seems to be at least one prick at every show…oh well.

first, me and bob talked to john from cobra in front of the annex and he put us on the guest list, so cobra verde is the greatest opening band ever. im not gay but watching john smack his hips with the tamborin really turned me on. hell, there from ohio. i didnt know they had bands in ohio.

second, j kicked ass. and he did spit. right next to his set list and bottled water.

third, that druken ass jumped in front me during the stooges. that prick. and what the hell do you mean you don’t know that much about the stooges. buy funhouse and shut up you sick sad man.

fourth, madison sucks. ive driven up to WIS three times for shows and know body shows up. next time he should spend his weekend nights in chicago where people show up.

bob got the whole show on minidisc from the board, it sounds great and you can’t have it.

    ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!!!

first, yes, you are gay…really, really gay.

second, cheap-fuck douchebags from chicago who don’t possess the decency to support j and purchase a $15 ticket, suck…hard.

third, in case you haven’t noticed, there’s a bit of a population discrepancy between chicago and madison, hence the smaller turn-out.

fourth, you can take larry, moe, shemp, and curly and stick them up your stupid ass.

fifth, it’s obvious that your possession of red hair, directly relates to your status as a flaming homo.

sixth, i couldn’t be happier about the selfish man-love that you and bob have for one another.

HA, HA, HA, HA, HA, HA!!!!!

tell him what you really think, Dude! Any man who plays the tambourine is probable leaning on the side of uphill gardeners, but someone who actually gets turned on by this sight, is, IMHO, gay as a window.

Before I get a barage of right-on, pc responses, there is, quite clearly, nothing wrong with peculiar man love.

Remember me from the Fog show at the Barrymore in March of 2001? We’re from the same town. Could you email me? Thanks.

no deepsludge, it was most definitely the penile type of turn-on, and there is indeed something wrong with that kind of man-love. very wrong.
