tomParticipantJ @ The Grog Shop in Cleveland
My girlfriend and I just got home from Cleveland. It was another amazing show. We met up with Chris at the show. One of my personal high-lites of the show was the sound check, where I got to hear J playing Forget the Swan acoustic, and Mississippi Queen with the guys from Cobra!
Sounder opened up. I liked their music, but thought their lyrics were terrible. Their lyrics were delivered in a Kim Gordon kind of way. I think they were attempting to be funny, but when mentioning "got marijuana" 10 times in one song, got old quick to me.
Cobra Verde were solid again. There lyrics are also a little less serious than I normally like(They do have a song called Underpants), but I dig their sound. The guitar player who is newer to the group seemed to add more fills than he did in Detroit, which sounded great.
J rocked again. The crowd seemed more vocal than the Detroit crowd, and J talked to the crowd more as well. At one point, someone from the crowd shouted out for Cats in a Bowl, and J played a little bit of it. Someone put in a reuqest for A Little Ethnic Song, and J obliged. It was the first time I’ve ever heard J play that one live. He even dedicated Waistin to someone who was lucky enough to celebrate their birthday at a J gig! The set list was siimilar to the Detroit show, but J did throw in Repulsion. A little over halfway through the show, J had a string break during Everybody Lets Me Down, and had to switch from the cutaway Gibson, to another Gibson., after he finished the song. The boys from Cobra came out to finish If Thats How Its Gotta Be, and it rocked. They played Freedom, Ammaring, and Freakscene to end the night.
J decided to solo for an extremely long time during Amma, and he was smokin. It absolutely amazes me how great J can play. Amma was well over 10 minutes. I love when J stretches songs out. If anyone taped this show, I would be willing to buy or trade.
The show was so good that my girlfriend and I seriously debated hitting the show in Cinci. Even halfway home we were talking about turning around, and going to the show. J is in fine form, and I strongly encourage everyone to make the trip to see J if possible. It’s definatley worth it.

Alex FrenchParticipanthey, i went to the show too. AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!!! I loved J’s electric set! sounder was good but pretty odd. cobra verde was awesome, early on during their set, their lead singer’s mic stand fell and hit me. My highlight was probably the little fury things acoustic, i’d never heard that one acoustic before. another highlight was when J played blowing it after me and a buddy screamed it. great show!

Alex FrenchParticipanthey, after J played a couple chords of "cats in a bowl" and said "cats in a bowl" what song did he play? i only remember some of the lyrics. it said "caterpillar munching on a leaf" and the verse was like "why wont you be my friend", i think. anyone know what song that would be?

FlyingCloudParticipantTom & Small Floating Baby, thanks a lot for the reviews
It’s cool how J reacts on requests. I’ve never heard before that he played ‘Little Ethnic Song’ in one of his more recent tours!
And great that he played a song, you’ve yelled for, Small Floating Baby October 21, 2002 at 10:32 am #62980

dogsqueezeParticipantHey Tom, Thanks for that great review….I agree that J. rocked at The Grog Shop……It was only my second time seeing J play live and I must say it rocked. I also have to say that I was the silly girl who asked J. to give a ‘shout out’ to my boyfriend for his birthday……..hehe………..that was fun! anyway, I love his new song and Yes, Ammaring was freakin awesome. Okay, that’s all.
