About an hour before J.’s gig, den Buck goes into the restaurant of the Melkweg, and guess who’s sitting there, drinking a cup of tea (and wearing a very curious orange [reminds me somehow of the Fall ] hat), yes, it’s J. himself, den Buck walks over to J., introduces himself, shakes hands, and this is the following mini-interview:

dB: I heard that you had an operation?
J.: Yeah…
dB: Everything’s fine now?
J.: Yeah…
dB: Great!
J.: Yeah…
dB: I’m looking forward to the gig…
J.: Me too, yeah…
dB: Have a good time, bye
J.: Hey thanks, bye

About half an hour later in the old hall of the Melkweg J. (without hat) unpacks his backpack, installs his pedals, plugs in his guitar, plays a little soundcheck until he is really satisfied with everything, and then leaves the stage for a moment.

22.15: A short introduction from the female presenter (about Dinosaur Jr. and his recent operation), J. walks on the stage, sits down, picks up his guitar, and starts with ‘Someone Said’, beautiful…. den Buck stood at the edge of the stage and enjoyed a GREAT gig, J.’s voice was great, and his guitar playing, well, amazing…

Highlights, well, the whole gig was a highlight, but den Buck’s honorary mentions go to: ‘Flying Cloud’, ‘If that’s how it’s gotta be’, ‘Waistin”, and ‘Alone’ in which he used his ‘cut and paste’-pedal to maximum effect, I think he had about four layers of guitar over which he played a blinding solo, WOW , and last song ‘the Wagon’ a beauty…

Shame that the strict timetable of the festival didn’t allow for an encore, would have loved to hear ‘Freakscene’…

It was great to see J. in such great form so shortly after his operation, and may he return to Amsterdam soon….

Yeah, really great gig. First song was ‘Someone said’. That was a bit of a surprise for me. ‘Flying Cloud’ was also one of my favourites. That ‘cut and paste’-pedal is really a great invention. Made ‘Get me’, ‘What else’s new’ and ‘Ammaring’ really good, whereas before they’d sort of drown in the soloing.

He looked really healthy for someone who’s just had surgery. Except the fact he was wearing a big body-warmer, while I had to take my sweater of because of the heat (and maybe to show everyone my ‘J Mascis + the Fog’ T-shirt ).

Never would have thought so many people still enjoy J so much. In the end everybody kept applauding and screaming for an encore. This woman behind me was yelling at the female presenter dB mentioned: ‘Get off the stage, let J back on! We don’t want you, we want J Mascis!’

Also checked out the new band of the former frontman of Kula Shaker, The Jeevas. Was pretty good.

Thanks for the reviews, sounds like a great show!!! The minute I heard of it was loud, distorted and very very cool, god I hope they archived it

Cool interview DB, good to hear J’s doing fine after all that pain.

Is your Real Player up-to-date?

The video clips are: "Everybody lets me down" from the Club Lek gig in Deventer in September, and "Not you again" (mis-labeled as "The Wagon" ) from the Crossing Border Festival!
