everyonelovesjaronParticipantI think for most of the bands I like, it’s their debut albums I like best of all. (A few notable exeptions, true, but I’d say 90%.)
What is it about a bands debut album that makes it so great? Is it that newness of their own particular sound? the fact they sold out afterwards? What is it?
Any thoughts?

SGParticipantI think debut albums rule alot of times because the artist gets freaked out too much to make the 2nd record, what to do with the music;try something new or stick to a formula, write songs in the vein of the 1st album or change a little, etc.
Not to get off topic but my theory is the first album you hear by an artist, not necessarily their first album is the one you like most. That seems to happen to me alot,it`s the one you hear first when you discover an artist, therefore your favorite.August 9, 2001 at 12:23 am #64448

I agree with your second part, it sort of fits in my, "the sound of the artist was new and fresh thing." I guess if more bands I liked I had discovered a few albums in, that might be true.
Anyone else? Is it because we remember the album fondly or because the others were inferior?

jasperParticipantI, too, often find that the album that I heard first is still my favorite of that band. So, because the debut is often the first thing you hear from a band, I think that is part of the explanation.
Besides that, I also think that there a lot of artists who just don’t have that much to say. So after their first album, they don’t have anything left to say. Bummer.
