AP – Dallas, TX – In breaking news, the upcoming "Dinosaur Jr. – Ear Splittin’ Country" will actually be recorded by a tribute band including Trent Reznor, Les Claypool, and Carrottop.
"There’s no information on the tracklisting yet because, basically, we have to learn to play all of these songs," Claypool said. "So far we’ve really nailed Raisins and The Wagon, so those two will definitely be on there. Right now we’re working on In A Jar and Gargoyles, which will be killer."
"One problem with making an album like this is, that Dinosaur Jr. have so many great songs that it’s almost impossible to narrow them down to just a few," Reznor continued. "So it’s pretty much down to our discretion. But most of the radio hits will definitely be on there. We’ve just taught Carrottop how to play the E chord on my Gibson, so he’ll be handling lead guitar on Ammaring, I think."
Carrottop’s involvement in the band has already sparked some controversy among the Dino Jr. fanbase.
"Well, it’s true, Carrottop’s never really played an instrument," Reznor said, "but you have to remember he’s one of the premier entertainers in showbiz today. One of the most experienced as well. So our line of thinking was, if we ever get to play these live, there’s nobody we’d rather have to work up the audience than Carrottop himself."
"That and, he’s a really big Mascis fan," Claypool added. "I mean, he asked us to join with these great big Bambi eyes, how could I say no? My heart’s not made of stone. At any rate, he’s doing awfully well with the synthesizers considering he’s only been playing with them since Tuesday."
Both Reznor and Claypool deny rumors of ego clashes on the set.
"Obviously both Les and I have our own ideas of what the final product should be," Reznor said. "That just happens when two very creative people get together. From the beginning I wanted to focus on the acoustic Dino songs – I really feel that if we front-load the album with Martin + Me songs, people would realize how great of an album Martin + Me really was, and perhaps they’d learn to appreciate it more."
"I wanted to focus more on the louder, yet more delicate Dino ballads like Same Day," Claypool said. "but it seems we’ll have to compromise a bit, and that’s just part of the creative process. Trent and I are getting along surprisingly well, in all honesty. I know there have been rumors of us blowing up and threatening to kill each other, but these are completely unfounded. Pretty silly, even."
"Right, and that one rumor about me trying to cut Les’s scrotum off with a rusty blade? Completely untrue," Trent echoes.
"Overall I’m really pleased with the progress we’re making," Claypool said. "We should have the final tracklist nailed down in a matter of weeks, and I guarantee you it will be incredible. Oh, but don’t expect that "feel the pain of everyone" song to be on there – Carrottop’s been having a little trouble with the drumming on it, so we’ll probably just avoid the song altogether."
