FogLightParticipantListen to a live version of "What else is new". The best one I can think of is from a 1997 concert available at http://www.freesofree.net. The track is about 9.5 minutes long and at about 3:20, J starts his totally rockin’ solo. At about 4:30, the drums and bass stop, and it’s just J continuing the solo all by himself until about 5:30. It has kind of a fuzzy "far-away" type of sound that I really love.
Here’s my question…
What pedals is J using to make that sound? Delay? Chorus? Big Muff with high sustain? Flanger? All of these? None of these? Help me out.
Thanks

ammaringnycParticipantThe far away sound is the memory man, but it could be the ibanez ad-9 they are both analog delays. I don’t think he has the big muff on then but it is possible but it may just be the gain of the amps. Later when the drum kicks in he uses the electric misstress flanger with the big muff and delay and sometimes even kicked on a tremolo and wah.

simmonsParticipantIsn’t there quite much reverb too? there are some "reverb solos" in ‘alone’ 6 minutes into the version from Riddarholmen 97. (out there/water festiva bootleg)?
Or is that just the memory man?How about the intro riff on ‘Thumb’ played live with Dinosaur? or with the Fog. listen to any recording , for example JMascis & The Fog -Hultsfred festival.
I think he uses the same sound both in ‘Thumb’ and ‘Get Me’ ?
Is that just the amp gain plus reverb? or something more?April 13, 2005 at 1:51 pm #100869

chaseParticipantSpaceland’s show was amazing! They played for about an hour and fifteen minutes (including two encores). They might have played longer but Murph kept signalling to J that he was too tired to keep going.
I checked J.’s set-up and almost all his pedals are placed in his rack (out my view) and contolled by a multi-footswitch board. One pedal on the floor in addition to the amp’s channel switch was a H.B.E. Germania: http://www.homebrewelectronics.com
I was drinking and having a great time so I didn’t write down the set-list, the only notable exception was they didn’t play " Little Furry Things". As much as we all know that this was kind of a "the Pixies are making tons of cash, so why don’t we…" it was still great to see them together and genuinely looking (J. kept trying to conceal his smiles when he looked over at Lou) like they were having a great time playing together.
