rambleonParticipantok guys … i need some help … i volunteer at this small arts charity called lauderdale house … the building itself was originally built in 1582, so it’s listed (ie protected)
anyhow … to get to the point – lauderdale house is trying to raise some money so they can have their ground floor floorboards resanded + revarnished … the floor is in a terrible state + the chipping + peeling is really, really bad …
… so the management wants to include a donation flyer with our xmas/new year ‘what’s on’ brochure + they want this flyer to be lighthearted + jokey …
+ as i’ve been helping them out with marketing they’ve asked me to come up with 2 or 3 ideas for this flyer (maybe come up with poems/puns about the floor?) … then work on the layout w/graphics etc …
the main idea we are trying to get across is – the floor has worn out b/c of all the people who have enjoyed the House over the years … (due to all the concerts, poetry reading, exhibitions etc.)
so right now i am desperately in need of a reworking of a film title (preferably a well-known one that would be instantly recognizable to most poeple) … and of course making it something to do with ‘floor’ or ‘floorboards’ — and also something about the terrible state the floor is in! … for example, my husband suggested ‘black floor down’ + my dad said, ‘floor wars’ … those are good, but i’m after something better …
anyhow … please give it some thought … the only thing is, we need the info as soon as poss b/c it should go out tomorrow or the next day … maybe thursday at the latest !! ugh …
many thanks !!!

SGParticipantThere used to be a jump blues band around here called The Floorboards who had a slogan:’cut a rug and discover The Floorboards’
I don`t know if that would work for you.

RobertParticipantOi, rambleon. Why don’t they hire one of those big sanding machines, the kind that looks sort of like a mutution between a vacuum cleaner and a metal detector, and sand it themselves? We used to do that once a year on the floor of the concert hall at campus. It’s best to shut it off when you’re pausing for beers though, or you’ll get small wavelike impressions in the floor.

rambleonParticipantwell, lauderdale house is a tudor mansion built in 1582, so the building is listed (protected by law) + all building work to the house or the grounds has to be to a certain standard, you know ? so they can’t just get anyone in there, it must be done professionally by people who specialize in restoring old floors …
i’m not sure if i mentioned it or not, but the job is estimated to cost £10,000 !!!!

RobertParticipantAh ok. That makes it a lot trickier. Here in norway you have to go through this crazy set of forms and applications just to remove or add a nail or whatever in/on buildings that are protected. And I guess that’s the deal in england as well. I wouldn’t recommending running around with a BIG sander yourself then
Rather costy operation! I guess you’ll have to sell a lot of cupcakes to raise that kind of money. Can’t you get bono to adopt the house? He’s allways eager to try to do stuff so people won’t be as disgusted by the horrible music that the group he’s in puts out.
God that sentence is under par!November 24, 2004 at 2:21 pm #106005
rambleonParticipantwell, i don’t know about bono, but you’re right … lauderdale could more than use an A-list celeb to raise the House’s profile (+ specifically draw attention to this appeal) …
maybe that’s something they’ll look into some day !?
btw, when i was last up there, we received our 1st donation cheque for £5 … so only £9995 to go !
