With J and Lou breaking the animosity and making that great tour .

    am i a dreamer……?

Do we "deserve" to receive another great "ear washing" tour from that other 80’s guitars/noise masters !!%? u know that other power pop trio that makes 2 doubles albums + 3 LP’s within 4 years……damn shit !

Never. And not simply because Mould says so. The latest issue of Magnet has a great story about the mid-80s Minneapolis scene centered around the Huskers and Replacements, and Grant Hart’s bitterness is still deep and intense. Apparently, both he and Greg Norton deeply despise Mould, to the point where they won’t cut a deal that would free up their back catalog for remastering (which it BADLY needs) solely because it would give Mould control of the catalog. They’d even make more money with the deal than they would otherwise, but they hate him so much they won’t budge. Compared to this situation, Lou’s past feud with J looks like kid stuff.

I don’t have fond memories of HD. They would come through with some songs that had the combination of melody and noise that was ear pleasing, most times it was plain noise. I saw them a few times and was underwhelmed. They were a critics band if you ask me. I wasn’t into the gay subtleties they stuck everywhere they could, either. They sure jumped out of the closet, though, huh? I don’t find their stuff as listenable as other stuff from that time. Forget them, it’s too bad we will never get a Minutemen reunion (though they would probably have never split, so there would be no need for a reunion).

thanks alot for the comment !

one thing i had never never known since all these years….. what is precisely the reason/reasons for that conflict between mould and hart …. i didnt know that norton was on a side of that war…..i thought he was on a "neutral" point…

i’ll buy the Magnet about Minneapolis 80’s scene.

–edit– and the other thing i don’t know is if norton is homosexual too?

Norton’s hetero, despite the big ol’ moustache.

Basically, Mould is a very moody control freak with a monstrous ego. Hart is a very scattered guy with a monstrous ego. Put them together, and Mould is always going to wrest control of whatever and whomever he works with, while Hart will seethe with resentment and then drink and do drugs to cope, which makes him unreliable, which then only spurs Mould on to control everything further, etc., etc. At least in the early days of Dino Lou kind of worshipped J, so that offset some of J’s control issues — Lou seems to have seen them as justified to an extent. Hart never worshipped Mould, just saw him as competition with much, much better organizational skills and a stronger will. That band was an ugly scene by the end. They were probably my favorite band of the ’80s — what a streak of records they had, and loud as fuck. Hell of a guitar sound, too. Still one of the best bands I’ve ever witnessed live. Crazy, manic energy, but totally focused. Being in that band must’ve been exhausting.

I don’t think Mould and Hart hate each other anymore though. I remember hearing that one time a few years ago they did an acoustic show as a duo did three husker du songs and seemed to be in good spirits and getting along.

not too positive into the hüsker clan !

DOA: Do you think the wounds will heal in time?

BM: Between me and Grant, specifically?

    DOA: Well, yes…

BM: No, I have no intent of ever going back to revisit that. I tried for many years to not shed negative light on anybody that I’ve worked with. I think that was the best way for me to go about it, and I think I’ll continue to go that way. I don’t like having shots taken at me, but I have other things to do. It’s bothersome, I don’t respond to it. Most of it’s not true…. So I don’t go back to revisit all that. I’ve tried through Grant and Greg’s attorney, who handles the Hüsker Dü estate, and through my attorney who represents my interests to try to figure things out. Most notably, over the past year. As everything’s got to logger-heads, I offered to buy those two guys out, so I could try to sue SST [Hüsker Dü’s record label for the best part of their catalogue].

That was just one night of playing a couple songs to benefit a friend with cancer. I was shocked by Hart’s bitterness in the recent Magnet interview, as I figured time would’ve chilled him out a bit. Nothing doing. I don’t think Mould ever hated Hart, he just got tired of dealing with him. Can’t say I blame him, really, though I wouldn’t want to work with Mould either. Apparently Sugar’s drummer doesn’t have a single good thing to say about Mould after spending a couple years drumming for him, and a friend of Dave Barbe’s told me that Barbe — who still really likes Mould — said Mould has two faces. At soundcheck everything’s fine. Once they’re back in the dressing room, Mould would unload like a lunatic over nothing in particular. Total Buddy Rich scenario.

Here’s a great, brand new interview with Mould. He gets into the Huskers matter at the end, and also mentions the Dino tour:

That photo is 100% genuine. It was taken last year at a benefit for Karl Mueller of Souls Asylum (who recently passed away). There’s another good interview in the new HARP Magazine where Bob addresses this one-off beig for the "greater good" of the benefit and not to read into it for anything more than what it was. As he tells it, Bob was scheduled to do a solo set and Grant was only in attendance. A couple hours before the show, Grant had his lawyer call Bob’s lawyer to get Bob’s cell number. Bob says his lawyer gave his number out in a "what was I thinking" moment. Grant called Bob and pitched the idea of doing a song or two. Bob agreed. Bob told Grant he would do his set, not off stage to Grant to walk on and set up his stuff, then play one of each of their songs. They briefly spoke afterward about the Husker Estate, then parted ways.

He also pretty plainly says not to count on a reunion, that the damage was done long ago. He says he still thinks about that era, but he’s in a much more positive place in his life and he doesn’t want to revisit all of that any time soon.

Greg Norton & his wife own & run a restaurant in Wisconson, apparently both are pretty pleasing chefs. Theres a great interview with him & pic in our other band forum…here

Bob Moulds new disc Body of Song is definitely worth checking out, much better than his last one Modulate. He’s touring in the fall with a full band, playing stuff thru his whole career.

Grant Hart recently played a western Canadian tour, caught a show, he was amazing as usual. I love that guys voice! He’s reissuing Nova Mob’s Last Days of Pompeii, should be out soon.

Loved Husker Du, shame they can’t get it together :!:
