eggwaterParticipantI was thinking a good poll would be for the greatest record labels…there are many with consistent quality…

Cloud9ParticipantHey Great Poll but I Miss "The Other" Option
My Vote is for Secretly Canadian/JagJaguwar, Great Bands Such as Songs Ohia, Dave Fischoff, Drunk & Spokane
So I Will Vote for Drag City

eggwaterParticipantI missed loads of labels out…
Duophonic
Thrill Jockey
Warp
Trance Syndicate
Kill Rock Starscan these be added?
I voted Drag City too…although most of my favorite rekkids are on SST, Drag City has the consistency…SST went a bit shit after Dinosaur and Sonic Youth left

everyonelovesjaronParticipantDoes subpop count or is that too non-indie for you?
<edit>Sorry, didn’t see poll options at top. </edit>

HalfmanParticipantI have to deviate from the poll selections and cast my vote for Caroline Records.
Wax Trax and Cleopatra would be nice ones to put on thre too.September 21, 2001 at 10:05 pm #65212

NP (ironically) – Smashing Pumpkins – "Gish" (vinyl LP on Caroline records just recieved today).

HalfmanParticipantI never knew Caroline had indie ties. Sue didn’t help Naked Raygun any….
By the way, ELJ, have you heard the goth tribute to SP on Cleopatra records? I bought it and gave it to a goth friend. I liked Switchblade Symphony’s take on Adore and not much else. I think KMFDM mangled Rhinoceroa beyond acceptance. They should be hung.September 22, 2001 at 12:32 am #65214

The only possible exception is the band that did ‘God.’ It’s god awful horrible, but a notch above the rest of the album.

SGParticipantGood poll Eggwater!
I chose SST-Black Flag,Minutemen/Firehose,Husker Du/Grant Hart,Meat Puppets,Bad Brains,Sonic Youth,Dinosaur Jr,etc. they were the best indie of the 80`s.Matador I put 2nd-Superchunk,Yo La Tengo,Bettie Serveert,GBV,Bardo Pond,Teenage Fanclub,Jon Spencer,Bailter Space,Pavement,Railroad Jerk,Silkworm,etc.
best indie of the 90`s,(they did have major label ties in the mid 90`s though, that`s why Superchunk left).Touch And Go/Quaterstick I would put 3rd-Slint,Seam,Mule,June Of 44,Man Or Astroman,Big Black/Shellac,Silkworm,Rachel`s,Rodan,Tar,etc
Drag City I would put 4th-Palace Brothers,Royal Trux,Red Krayola,Gastr Del Sol,Smog,etc.
There`s alot of good indies,Caroline was cool, they put out the Drop 19`s,sighned Versus and dropped them, which I`m still mad about, they care more about electronica these days,Matador seems to be in the same direction(and hip hop)since indie rock has taken some harsh hits over the last few years,I saw in a magazine recently that indie rock will problably make a comeback.

eggwaterParticipantI can agree with a lot of your points there mr. salami…I was with the SST vote at first and I would have stuck with it…but even though I love all those bands you mentioned (not sure about G. Hart’s solo stuff)…this stuff was when I was not of record buying age…( i do love the band ALL though on Cruz – they did the class "she’s my ex" and "scary sad") I’ve followed Drag City almost since it’s birth and i just know that a lot of the stuff I’ve not heard on that label is gonna be good because everything i have is top…my favorite is possibly King Kong’s Funny Farm album or the final Gastr Del Sol album…too hard to choose…I really want the two Burnout records.
the thing in the UK with Matador is…a lot of the bands have different labels over here…for example Pavement were on Black Cat at first and Superchunk were on City Slang, so we don’t realise how important that label was.
I only have two records on Caroline…the Neil Young Covers LP and the Guitarrorists compilation..both featuring J Mascis…(my reason for purchase I have to admit)
