I just got an e-mail from whoever handles the John Butler Trio’s promotions. In it they said they were posting a promotional ad of some sort that they were asking fans to post in coffee shops, record stores, and any other miscellaneous places that people learn about new music. Well, I was wondering what everyone thought about trying to do a street campaign for J’s new album. I assume that if someone made an ad and posted here on the website, people could download it, print it, and post it. I live here in Columbia and know of plenty of places that I could put up flyers concerning J’s new album. Hell, I bet a lot of people that used to be into Dinosaur Jr. would be like, "Damn, I forgot about J Mascis. I’m kind of interested to see what that album’s like." Well, maybe this is wishful thinking, but the John Butler Trio is doing it and I actually think it’s a pretty good idea.
What do you guys think? Is this viable, or am I waisting my time writing this?August 12, 2002 at 1:27 pm #55248
Definitely a cool idea, think we had something like that here b4 when More Light came out…at least I think we did <img> Definitely up for that, would post it in all record stores, outside clubs, anywhere I thought would get peoples attention!
Something else you could do is post info on the new release & upcoming tour info & link to freakscene on the other music message boards you belong to. Not saying spam anyone, posting info on upcoming releases you’re looking forward to, tours you can’t wait to check out…and so on <img> No doubt all our music Freaks here visit other message boards so…

Doesn’t J’s label have a street team that the fans can help out with? I know on other indie band lists, people often volunteer to put up promo posters and spread the word, and get some stickers or a free poster in return usually…August 13, 2002 at 2:21 am #55250
Ultimatum did have a street team deal with More Light, hopefully they do the same again. Think people on the Flaming Lips and Bob Mould street teams also volunteered to sell tshirts etc at shows in exchange for free tickets, although not sure how much they saw of the shows due to standing at the tables.
All for the Ultimatum Street team & FreakScene Freaks to promote J in any way possible <img> Ultimatum did link to FreakScene on the guitarcenter disc giveaway which was cool. Hopefully same thing happens on all promos related to the new release…sounds like a plan <img>

I’m sorry to say I have no artistic skill or even the knowledge to conjure up a cool promo ad on a computer, but I know that some of you guys (especially all the contributors to the "How u doin" thread) know what you’re doing when it comes to it. I would obviously suggest using the cover from the CD on this homepage and go from there. Hell, I think it’d be pretty cool to use some of the "How u doin" pictures on some of them. I know some of those would definitely catch some eyes!!! Anyway, I hope to see some ads that I’ll be able to post around my town. Any and all ads are welcome and appreciated!August 14, 2002 at 3:06 pm #55252
Some great ideas here <img>
unfortunately my creative abilities are weak, but I surely would like to take part on the contribution side <img>August 15, 2002 at 1:01 am #55253

I’m going to go a head and tell everyone my idea. I was thinking about trying to get something cool done for all our memebers and J, please let me know what you think…
I sent an email to Jeremiah on the 2nd and a followup on the 6th with the following ideas. I got the idea when I posted the topic regarding how many albums J sold of More Light? I was thinking it would be cool to help J, the record label, and the members of Freakscene.net to have like a listening party of the new album for Freakscene.net members only. This would let all the members get involved so maybe we could really meet each other (buy and hear the album first), it would let the record label be present to sell the album and see the J’s fans are willing to buy stuff J puts out and the members could give a thank you to J for doing what he does best and thank Jeremiah for keeping this going for J and all the fans.
Keep in mind that this was all before it was posted to us that a record label had been selected for the U.S. market or a date had been given to us for release. Now that Ultimatum will be putting out the album and is offering the pre-release sale, I would have no idea if they would want to put anything into a "listening" party for J’s new album. I thought it would be great free PR. I even had the idea maybe J could be present and maybe talk about the songs or anything about the new album. If he would want to take out the Gibson and play a few that would be great too.
At this point I have not received anything back from Jeremiah regarding this idea. I have no idea what all Jeremiah has going on or if this idea could even fly with or with out support from Ultimatum (since we would need something to listen to if nothing else <img> ). It was my idea and I thought it was good.
I was just trying to make what I thought was a good thing happen

Chris-I like the idea,I`m a little confused about it though,we all live really far apart so meeting each other is kinda impossible, but if you mean Jeremiah putting the album up on mp3 here on the site, that would be cool, maybe 2 weeks before the release date?August 15, 2002 at 8:32 pm #55256
Deepsludge mentioned posters, but all I was thinking was a flyer on 8 1/2 x 11 that everyone could just print up. I’m lucky b/c I have access to my school’s printer so it won’t cost anything except the paper, especially if it’s in color.
Iwadley – that’d be great if you could get us started on the idea and make up a promo ad.
Allison, do you know of any of the radio stations yet? I know that there’s a European station that broadcasts electronic sets over the internet. Maybe one or a few of the stations J will be on will be available to everyone else.
Deepsludge- Did you want anything that I offered? If so, hook me up with your address.August 16, 2002 at 2:25 am #55257
Thanks to all that thought I had a good idea going.
I know know that everyone would not be able to make it to something like a one time listening party. But I thought as far as a location it could be someplace near Jeremiah. I thought he could be a major help in finding a location near him that would be willing to help us out. My idea was that since not everyone could make it, we could post photos of everyone that wanted to and someone that attends could give a full report of all that went down at the party. (I know before everyone posted photos of themselves in one of the topics) but this would be different.
I am sorry to say however that this is all still only just a dream at this point and unless a higher power steps in I would just wait. Please don’t hold your breath. <img> I think the best any of us can hope for (if you even bother or care) is that we all communicate when we are going to be at a show and do our best to meet each other. <img> So far everyone that I have had the pleasue to meet has been really cool to me. <img>
I think I’ll just wait for my copy of the new album to show up in my mailbox, and when tour dates are given map out how many shows I can see and how far my money can take me, like I did for the last two years.

Definitely a cool idea, although would probably be pretty hard to coordinate with J leaving for the European promo stuff soon. Ultimatum hopefully will have some cool promo stuff happening, gotta love that with the advance order you will be able to access a full stream of the disc…sometime soon hopefully. Seems they are still working on some stuff on the Ultimatum site…can’t wait till they get it up and active <img>
Looking forward to the City Slang mp3 in September, fingers crossed some of the radio spots J will be doing will be available online…or taped by some of our European freakscene members <img>

I would also like to do some voluntary communal work, but I realise it is a bit difficult when I live in Norway…August 16, 2002 at 12:10 pm #55260
I don`t have a printer or artistic ability but will promote the album the best I can, mention it on other message boards(even the jazz boards will know <img> <img> )shout FREE SO FREE out really loud <img> and throw copies of the cd at HMV customers and employees <img> <img>August 16, 2002 at 10:16 pm #55261
No worries about you being in Norway. I’m sure J’s got fans over there, same as here. We could turn this into an international street promotion campaign!
