davidpropsParticipantI saw the show at the El Rey in LA last night and was surprised at the small size of the crowd. I don’t think this show was advertised or promoted properly. At least I didn’t have to fight to get close to the front and end up standing behind some guy with abnormal human growth hormone levels. The Fog rocked! I saw them at the Troubadour in November and you can tell their time on the road has made them tight, tight, TIGHT! When they dug back to play "The Lung," I was awed, man, it was a great sounding, amazing version. Other highlights included "Repulsion," "Back Before You Go," and the stellar ripping solos in "Ammaring." All the J/Dinosaur stuff was amazing. The Stooges shtick was a little disappointing, but whatever. It was sad to see J take back seat at his own show, but I don’t think he really cared (his expressions are hard to read, you know). I would have liked a half hour of more J/Dino material instead of a Stooge-fest, but the show was still awesome. The highlight of the Stooge-shtick was Texas Terri singing "No Fun" and saying "That was fun" afterward.

umascowParticipantDITO! I was at the el rey show too. i felt the same way. i wish i payed for a stooges cover band ticket instead maybe it would of been cheaper. i certainly didn’t get my moneys worth out of this show. "the lung" was amazing possibly one of the best versions i’ve heard live. also "budge" was a real treat. i had caught wind that j. had been playing it lately and i was really anticipating it. i’ve seen j twelve times and never heard "budge" only on bootlegs.
the fog was really tight and all the songs were great even though it was only 45min.
the stooges songs are painfully boring. it amazes me that j. who writes the best songs in the world was influenced by that crap. oh well life goes on- just warning any of you guys goin to see him soon-feel free to leave as soon as richard asheton gets on cause they dont play any more j songs after that.April 28, 2001 at 11:38 am #62019
AGAPParticipantHey,
You guys got to hear Budge, Repulsion and The Lung all at the same show….that sounds pretty damn cool. Too bad about the poor turnout…confusing isn’t it.
If your not Stooges fans I can understand being disappointed by only 45 minutes of J/Dino stuff….but Sweet Zombie Jesus its Ron Asheton!!!! Sorry, I am just a huge Stooges fan and would love to see the whole 3 Stooges/Hellride East show a zillion times.
Ron Ashetons guitar sounds influenced our hero in a huge way…thankfully. Recently saw interview with The Fog where Watt credits The Stooges with helping him thru his illness…"Thank God for The Stooges Man"Try this link out, 1 1/2 hr concert from New York in Feb,

BabalonParticipantIt’s really a shame that folks that call themselve’s J/Dino fans can’t appreciate what, in a small sense, is musical history in the making: THREE generations of punk rock on one stage together. Ron Asheton "invented" a new genre of music the day he and Iggy wrote "I Wanna Be Your Dog". You don’t have to like the Stooges/Iggy Pop, but do your homework before you start dissing.

ShadeParticipantI was at the El Rey Show to and J did "Get Me," "The Wagon" and "Repulsion." Then "Ammaring" literally blew me away because it sounded soooo beautiful. However, I left the show feeling extrememly disappointed in that The Stooges took over. I mean I still got to see J play guitar and he seemed to be having fun with it, but I was bored to tears, being that every single Stooges song sounded the same. I knew I wasn’t the only confused person, as I looked around the theater to a bunch of quiet, big-eyed J/Dinosaur Jr. fans just staring with eyes glazed over.
I know I’m a fanatic and its always great to see J (That was the 6th time) but I was thinking about the fans who haven’t had a chance to see him live before this show, and I think they were ripped off and disappointed. I love J to death, but that show was CRAP after Ammaring.

AGAPParticipantHey,
As I said above I can understand being disappointed with only 45 minutes of dino/J stuff if your not a Stooges fan. I think Babalon made a good point about the history involved with 3 generations of punk rock on stage. Also agree with Babalon on Ashetons guitar sounds, no one was doing that great sonic wailing way back then…he is amazing and deserves all the respect he receives. Calling the show crap after the Mascis stuff seems kind of harsh especially after you got to hear Get Me, Ammaring, Budge, Repulsion just to mention a few.
Umascow… a friend of mine would be thrilled to death if he read the Richard Asheton thing…he always considered himself the bastard son of Ron!!!

umascowParticipantdont get yr panties in bunches cause a few old time dino fans dont enjoy yr "punk generation jam". we expected 15 songs of j’s, not stooges. i dont care how great asheton is I didn’t pay for his show. even still last time i checked watt and mascis are from the same generation so what is this about three gererations of punk. who cares anyways.watts vocals are sorry too."same day" has great backing vocals on album and he slaughters them. he ruins almost every song with his all star bass lines. he’s a very nice man who i’ve met and he’s a great bassist, but i feel ill listening to his bass lines. the songs are already amazing, leave ’em be.

AGAPParticipantHey,
Relax guys, thought I was being kinda empathetic toward your feeling ripped off with only 45 minutes of Mascis/Dino stuff.
My take on the 3 generations thing is that obviously Asheton came 1st, Watt is several years older than Mascis and started up before him…I could be wrong but hey thats what I thought. Mascis of course is the 3rd generation. The fact that they are doing tons of Stooges songs has been well documented along the tour…as well as the fact that Asheton might be joining them along the West coast. Sorry you guys felt ripped off but the show sounds like it was pretty good even for only 45 minutes.
As for the history/punk generation jam involved in the Mascis/Watt/Asheton showcase….I would love to see that and don’t feel the need to apologize for recognizing and appreciating the history involved in getting Mascis to where he is today. You obviously choose not to and that is just fine by me, hopefully you can respect that others don’t share that opinion.
Watt is definitely no Bob Pollard vocally but don’t remember him ever saying he was…he works hard with what he has…again just fine by me. As for his bass runs, to each his own right…not for you oh well. Mascis made a great point in a recent interview that him and Watt balance each other out. Great tag team in my opinion, but again only my opinion you are definitely free to express yours…just hopefully you can respect that there are many different opinions that are all valid.

ShadeParticipantHey Allison. Sorry if I don’t share your opinion, because that’s what they are after all…opinions. And my opinion is that after Ammaring, the show was crap. I have been to dozens upon dozens of punk rock shows so I am not ignorant in stating my opinion. I was there to witness all of the disappointed faces in the crowd so my thoughts about the show are not cruel or harsh, they’re just true feelings.

AGAPParticipantHey Shade,
Just want to clarify that I in no way thought you or anyone else was ignorant in posting their opinions…definitely agree that all opinions are valid. To put some context into my saying harsh, I sadly am from Canada…currently…and have to drive hundreds of miles to check out any type of cool show. The drive to see Mascis in November last year was treacherous but well worth it, recently another road trip took six-seven hours to check out another of my heros. So 45 minutes of what sounds like a pretty amazing set by Mascis would be very cool by me…even if I had to drive for hours to see it. Again thought I was being empathetic about you guys feeling ripped off, hope no hard feelings involved…funny how things get going….

TimParticipantMan – this reminds me of the letter section from Maximum Rock and Roll —"You’re not punk…" —- "No, you’re not punk."
Hey – this forum is for opinions – lets respect all of them. -
