rosaParticipantjust thought I’d throw that out there, as I seem to disagree with most of you about it. I have no big thesis here.

AGAPParticipantDinosaur Jr is definitely not sad or depressing to me.. At All!!! Sure some of the content is kinda sad but overall I always feel optimistic versus sad after listening to J’s songs. But hey that could just be me

MattmanParticipantSomeone’s trying to cause trouble.
I agree though… I never got the whole depressed vibe.

HalfmanParticipantMattman, you rang for trouble?
I think too many confuse introspection with depression. "not the same"With spare punk cards to pull,

K7 Rides AgainParticipantI think I’m going to mostly agree with AGAP’s statement. Typically, a lot of the subject matter is down and out, but I usually feel pretty rejuvinated after a Dino session!
Not The Same-good point on the intorspection versus depression, but that song definately IS depressing no matter how you look at it. Said it b4 and will say it again…can’t listen to this song because of memories it conjures.
(OK, so one or two ACTUALLY ARE songs that make me sad, but that’s it )

jasperParticipantSad? Yes. Most of J’s songs seem to deal with loneliness, heartbreak and unhappiness. It’s in the lyrics — "there never really is a good time / there’s always nothing much to say" is only one of countless possible examples — in his melancholy guitarsolo’s, in everything.
Depressing? No. As seems to be the case for most of you, his music does not depress me. It makes me feel better when I listen to it. As sad music tends to do.
Why is that? Arthur Schopenhauer had a beatiful theory about this fact… Let me get back to you as soon as I’ve done some studying.

SGParticipantNo,I don`t find J`s music depressing.I agree that Not The Same is down and out, problably the most sad tune J has written.Dinosaur`s music picks you up for the most part I find.

dfkgurlParticipantMy sentiments are the same as Allison’s. I have "used" Dino’s music for years to make me feel better. No matter if I am mad or sad or depressed, it seems to bring me out of it….always! Maybe the fact that J expresses those feelings so eloquently is what makes us feel better. It is sort of like, well I’m not the only one who feels down. Or maybe it’s that although his songs tended to deal with loneliness, etc. (I don’t think the Fog stuff does as much), he still hangs on, he still seems hopeful in a weird way.

K7 Rides AgainParticipantyeah right on dfkgurl!!! You CAN identify with it, and thus you’re not the only one out there who’s ever felt that way. Instead of feeling alienated/ostracised/outcast, you feel safe/secure/included. It’s comfort within my mind. J’s music is a place of refuge for me. It seems like it’s that way for everyone else too, who’s posted on this thread so far.

jasperParticipantWait. I just realized that I’ve tried to say something about Schopenhauer before, in what might have been the single most interesting discussion on this board ever, right here. It seems that this discussion is somewhat related to that one.

Bucky RamoneParticipantYep, those are great honest lyrics, expressing feelings in a way that you recognize, and in that way make you feel comfortable (like ‘hey, there’s someone else going through certain things and feelings and he IS finding the right words….’)

jamclarkParticipantI’ve never really thought of Dino Jr / Mascis music as depressing. It’s something I usually listen to when I’m bummed out about things. I don’t know if I’m looking for sad music, or if it’s just the whole ‘I shall listen to something I can relate to’ vibe.
However, there are quite a few songs that I think are at least ‘sad’ sounding…. Here’s my listing:
Over Your Shoulder
Not the Same
Anything from the Gas Food Lodging soundtrack
Keeblin
Forget It
Quest
AloneAnd to deviate a little bit, here are some of the dino songs that always bring a smile to my face:
Feel the Pain (images of the video flash in my head)
Tarpit
Nothing’s Going On
Whatever’s Cool With Me
Keep the GloveThat’s it, back to writing crippled SQL statements.
-Jamie
working the casino floor
scratching at the corner store
a camera crew at my front door?

bobParticipantI think most of his songs are loneliness and stuff but not all are depressing like the wagon (and most of the songs on GM) which is about being alone yet so hopefull and the solos on my favorite songs are so melodic and life-affirming.
I think the answer is yes and no. but I find most of it make me feel good.January 9, 2002 at 8:05 pm #53634

buckingham rabbitParticipanti guess i’m like most people here–the music doesn’t depress me and it in fact helps me when i’m depressed. and the reason i like mascis so much, especially back in high school, is because i identify with his dejected introversion. i mean, look at the lyrics: ‘i’m a leper/embarassed to be alive’. goddamn, right?
and really thats the appeal of this bbs. most of you all feel the same way. i don’t really know anyone in real life that feels this way about dinosaur jr.
