santiagoParticipantdude, i couldn’t tell if they were good or not, because it was just way too loud! yeah, it probably sounds wimpy to say, but frankly if you just get blasted with static with no discernible rhythm or tone, it’s just shit. the kit they had might have a suited a much bigger venue, but it just sounded awful last night. spare a few, i could barely tell what songs they were playing. i’d seen j on his own a few years back and lou in folk implosion and sebadoh, all of which were far more memorable experiences than last night. i don’t think i’m alone, the tickets were expensive and it wasn’t a weekend, so only people who really wanted to see them would have gone, but the crowd seemed completely unmoved and unmoving and just sort of filed out in silence when it was over (many had left throughout the show).

simmonsParticipantsome people just don’t understand dinosaur. they are still not ready for them, even it’s nearly twenty years since they first began their live shows.. If you know the songs, it’s no problem hearing the songs’ structure even if it’s loud. too bad for those people.

santiagoParticipanti dunno, man, i’ve been a dinosaur fan for years and been going to gigs for nearly twenty years. Â i think that gives me enough license to say that it wasn’t a great show without being subject to "you don’t understand" teenage bullshit. Â i’m not saying they were bad, only that i personally couldn’t tell, maybe it was the mix more than the levels…

dtuParticipantsantiago i’m afraid i’ll have to differ, i thought the gig was great. i’ve been to dino shows before (green mind, where you been) and the sound was as you described but last night was way better. okay a few songs were muddy and a few others wouldn’t have been my favourites but the other stuff was right on, i could pick out the rhythms and the solos great; okay maybe the vocals were not clear enough but hey it’s dino jr. i had my earplugs with me after reading some other reviews but they stayed in my pocket. i thought the ambassador was dingy but the gig was good if a little short at about an hour. where were you standing anyway?

jayParticipantok the sound is never good in the ambassador. i too brought earplugs after the mcgonagles noise fest but did nt need to use them.i was standing halfway between stage and mixing desk and could hear each song clearly.loads of people around me going mental. you only get out of it what you put into it.

alan cicconeParticipantI completely agree with santiago
Ive been a dinosaur fan for years, ive seen j play solo and with the fog and the levels were never as excessive as they were at the gig in the ambassador. I also don’t agree with the bullshit "oh its the way they are, you dont understand" I understand dinosaur immensely. I’ve got every album and have nothing but respect and admiration for the band but there was an inherent disregard for the audience. I looked around and could see literally tens of people sticking their fingers in scratching in their ears looking confused. i wanted to say, you idiots your ears are being damaged. hearing is far too delicate. i’m all for loud and punishing music, i love my guitar to be loud but not at the expense of others. it was such a ridiculous display. the main problem was the cutting effect lou had on his bass. i started the gig front row and ended up right at the back, i have a much fonder memory of seeing j and the fog in the music centre four years ago. its a pity because better songs were played the other night.September 1, 2005 at 5:09 pm #112410

Quik KillParticipantI was at the J Mascis+the Fog show at the House of Blues, last year, and I saw the Hollywood show for the reunion tour. Both shows were great, but my ears didn’t ring as bad, this year, as the House of Blues show. I took my friend from T.J., Mexico to the show. He had heard a few songs from cd’s I played him, but didn’t know what to expect from Dino Jr. As soon as he heard J start playin’ he looked at me and said, "oh, shit!" and started pounding his beer. J was playing on the right side of the stage, then, and we were close enough, that we were putting our empty beer bottles to right of the stage, behind the curtain. All I got to say is we walked out of there and said, "we might have lost part of our hearing, but it was worth it!"
