OriginalPosterLostParticipantHey,
This is kinda a weird topic but its something that has led to a few interesting debates with friends. Last nite watching some late nite tv I heard a familiar song, it was The Jesus and Mary Chain…Happy When It Rains, it was being used in a Chevy commercial. Other examples include the nike use of Search & Destroy by the Stooges, The Passesnger by Iggy for a canadian beer commercial,Blitzkreig Bop by the Ramones in a Budweiser spot, Bob Mould also has a couple of tunes used for promos.
Some of my friends called it blasphemy to use these songs….specifically Search & Destroy, to promote consumer products. I tend to see it a bit differently, these guys are making more cash having these songs used,
and more people get exposed to some good tunes, those are the positives I see in this.Just wondering what some of you think about this issue? Have any of J Mascis songs been used in this way….I have never heard it but you might have.

OriginalPosterLostParticipantHey Bates,
I think that, as long as the artist agrees & is not getting ripped off, it’s no big deal. Though hearing "Baba O’Reilly" in an SUV commercial rather turns my stomach, I can’t really fault the car company if The Who agreed to it. The only beef I have is when they use the work of artists who are dead and gone– that Jimi Hendrix song in the Pontiac commercial, for example.
Is it just me, or are most of these recognizable songs popping up in car commercials?? Mazda recently used "Big Red Rocket of Love" by the Reverend Horton Heat; I’ve also heard songs by Stone Temple Pilots, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and the Rolling Stones used to promote cars. Damn, nothing says "good, reliable vehicle" like "Walking on the Sun" by Smash Mouth…er…
xo
Rosap.s. never heard any Mascis material in ads, that I can recall.

OriginalPosterLostParticipantHey,
You guys are making the same points I made going over this with my friends….at least they are making some money off of this. Saw Iggy on a vh1 special he stated anyone can use his stuff as it wasn’t made to be commercial so he didn’t feel like he was selling out. Hey at least it makes commercials a lot more entertaining.
I agree the car companies seem to be using most of the cool songs in commercials, hmmmm do I need a new chevy thats Happy When It Rains…..ahhhhh the commercial is working.
Heard a Lemonheads song on a florist commercial recently, kinda cool.

dimpfelmoserParticipantFamine, War, global warming and here we are discussing if so called cool music should be used for daft commercials. Well, Iggy has sold out a long time ago and if I was in a crap indie band struggling to make a living out of my music I wouldn´t turn down 10000 $ from Nike or whatever. And some commercials are quite good. Just saw Unbreakable the other day and was really chuffed, that they had the Pixies´ I´ve been tired on the soundtrack. I know, it´s not an ad, but somehow the same thing.
The only two bands I wouldn´t want to be used for commercials are probably Fugazi and the Dead Kennedys.
All others are cool with me. After all, this is capitalism.

OriginalPosterLostParticipanthole and white zombie had songs on commercials for baywatch a while back.. i just hate baywatch so yea.. and i remember recently seeing cannonbal in a car commercial and they edited all the cool parts and just had the same part over and over. it bugs me when they edit the song. but i agree with why people do it. for money. and if you are on a big label with no support u need money.but ya.. byem, james

OriginalPosterLostParticipantBack to film scores, J has a track in one of the Wayne’s World films which came as a bit of a surprise, and Afghan Whigs had a track on some US teen flick (think it was Down to You) which made the whole film somewhat watchable.
And on a separate note all together, I understand the term "having beef" with something, but where the hell does it come from. I assume it does not come from two angry chaps who were sharing a burger and one got the bigger half, causing a dispute….
All information gratefully received.
Hah! Now that I’ve got $100 million to splash around, I’ll be making a few improvements.January 16, 2001 at 11:46 am #65726
jeremiahKeymasterIn Rolling Stone a couple years they had a little sidebar article on artists that were doing things with commercials. They mentioned that J was turned down for a Nike commercial. Very odd..
I thought the use of Out There in Waynes’ World was pretty cool. Did not fit but gave the ‘saur more exposure. The strangest J addition to a soundtrack would have to be Blah on the Melrose Place soundtrack. Clearly the standout track on the album even thought I was ashamed to buy it at the time.

OriginalPosterLostParticipantThere was this series some years back that played "Start Choppin’" in an episode. Not sure what the show was titled -was about a guy at some university that was in love, this didn’t work out and he started drinking and wanted to kill himeself. Or something like that. Does anyone know this show -the title?

OriginalPosterLostParticipantre the nike ad and the decision not to take on J.
I guess that his public profile (slacker, can’t get out of bed rubbish that is always written) didn’t fit with a company associated with sports/fitness.
Kinda like getting in your attorney general as the new Marlboro man.
Hah! Now that I’ve got $100 million to splash around, I’ll be making a few improvements.January 19, 2001 at 3:41 pm #65732
AGAPParticipantHey,
You could be right about the image problem ie that crap slacker image….never bought it!!! Thing is Iggy has quite the history, way Too Much Junkie Business thru the early years of his career, cleaned up his act thou awhile back.
God I hope the next time I have a Dr Pepper I don’t start thinking of that horrifying Bee
Gee’s song….that would suck in such a huge way!!!I agree with you to a degree Dimpfelmoser, there were still some good tunes after New Values & Party but some definitely seemed geared to money making. If I remember correctly what Iggy said about selling out was anyone can use the songs as they were not made to be commercial so go for it. The only songs I have heard in commercials etc have been his early stuff with the Stooges and some early solo stuff so that fits with his explanation. The song Butt Town was featured on a Beavis & Butthead show, perfect for that song….it was hilarious best place for that song in my opinion.
Allison
ps Too Much Junkie Business is a great Thunders/Heartbreakers tune….awesome.
The beginning of I’m Not Fine in my opinion was definitely influenced by Cry for Love by Iggy….only my opinion.
