malcomParticipantI was looking at the full member list today, and I couldn’t help but notice that 90% of our 1000 members have posted nothing, ever! What do you think would provoke a person to go through the trouble of registration, and then not post?

HalfmanParticipantI have expressed this same idea in another thread (can’t remember which one). I could be wrong but I think the other thread culminated in a little fingerpointing. However, the percentage you mentioned is inexplicable. Is there a comparison to other member lists at the web sites of other artists that can give us an idea of where we stand?
It’s ironic this post is here, as I was on the road thinking to myself about how I have never belonged to another other artist’s fan base to the extent I do here. At one time I liked the Dead quite a bit, but never followed through, prob due to that demographic thing about the Dead that scares so many. Perhaps, the time was just not right.
What got me thinking was how another member talked to me about the "deadness" he was describing about posts and such here as of late. Has there been a change lately, Who knows? I haven’t been here long enough to compare it to another time frame. Most things ebb and flow, as I am sure this site will continue to do.
With as many changes as this site and the people who belong to it undergo, something has to provide a basis, a point of attraction. Obviously, J and his many wonderful works are expected to be the main thing. The site, as many who frequent others have attested to, is of a high and continually improving quality. The individuals who offer their time to keep it running smoothly are courteous, helpful and another big reason the regulars keep coming back.
The topics are always different and accomodating. If you don’t like what is currently getting posts, you can start your own or bring up an older thread to bring about satisfaction.Sorry, Malc, I can’t see why people don’t put forth as much of their time as do others. If they gave it a chance and made themselves friendly and gave others a chance to do the same beyond the point of any surface determinations of character and worth, sky’s the limit.

AGAPParticipantHey,
I remember this conversation taking place a little while ago as well, don’t remember the finger pointing deal thou.
One thing to remember is the amount of people posting does not equal the amount of people visiting the site…which btw is a very healthy amount. When I first started on freakscene, a few versions ago…not really sure of the date…I joined up specifically to get the newsletter Jeremiah was sending out. You had to register to receive the newsletter, I didn’t log on to or post on the bbs for a significant amount of time, just didn’t feel like it. Over this last summer the original newsletter deal was discontinued and started up on yahoo, don’t think people have to register now to receive the newsletter. I have joined many sites I don’t post on to receive band updates etc ie Flaming Lips. So not sure what the reasons are but could be any of the above…or not.
So, we get plenty of lurkers and people who stop in for the multimedia experience along with the hard core group of posters…pretty cool. For awhile before we got this new server we kept getting booted off of servers for overusing bandwidth…gotta love that. Why they don’t join in the bbs I really couldn’t say, fingers crossed they join in at some point.
Allison
Halfman only example I can give you is for the Bob Mould site, think they are at over 700 members (took freakscene half as long to reach that point ) and at the most 20 people post over a period of over a month or so.

SGParticipantYeah, all the new members here should post here as well as the old members who have`nt posted much-START POSTIN!!!
It`s hard for us regulars here to think up new topics sometimes and what to say when replying to posts,we need more brains working here to keep this site active.
C`mon folks,we`re friendly here,don`t be shy.It`s not hard to talk to people here.December 21, 2001 at 3:31 pm #66998
everyonelovesjaronParticipantAnd continuing J.’s musical prophecy to explain how we get them to post:
"If there’s a way I wish we’d see it."
It’s all there in the chorus to Freakscene kiddies.

I, for one, lost my job at the end of the summer, and have had lots of free time to post about. But I still try to exercise a little discretion, and not go nuts replying to every thread just to hear (see?) my own voice.
I think that people will post when it’s important to them. And I bet that lots of the more silent members are lurking about, as Allison said; maybe just not yet compelled to reply. It can be difficult to ease into a community that is already well-established.
I have no complaints; I think the bbs here is great. If more people start talking, fine; if not, fine. I’ll find something here that makes me laugh either way.
Take care

MattmanParticipantWell, we get about 500 seperate visits per day (about 5000 individual page hits.) Guess the Dino community is largely composed of lurkers…

AGAPParticipantWell said Rosa, definitely cool with me as well, always find something here to make me laugh…gotta love that.
